In “ Legal Alien”, Pat Mora uses metaphor, diction, conflict to express people who are discriminated against have to mask who they are in order to not feel alienated.

Firstly, Pat Mora uses Metaphor to express the struggle of being from mixed culture from everyone else. Pat Mora expresses the emotion of being alienated when she writes “sliding back and forth / between the fringes of both worlds ( 17-18)”.Pat Mora is comparing the speaker as a door fringe, because the speaker feels like they don't belong anywhere since they are mixed culture. When the speaker says “between the fringes of both worlds”(18), the speaker is comparing themselves as a fringe and the two different worlds are Americans and Mexicans. Pat uses “alien (11)” to emphasise how the speakers feels about being mixed. Pat mora uses “alien” to expresses how the speaker feels about being mixed culture. When she says “alien” it tells the reader that the speaker feels isolated and un-relatable to others because they aren’t like everyone else, specifically because they are from two different race so the speaker feels like they don't have a place where they belong without being identified by their race. Another word that Pat mora uses to highlight the speaker's emotion about being excluded because they are seen as different is “masking (20)”. “masking” is being used to portray that the speaker feels like they have to hide who they are and act the way by how they look so they won’t be alienated. Usually when someone says “masking” they are hiding their true self from others so they won't get hurt or judged. Pat Mora writes "You may speak /Spanish but you're not like me"(12-11)” in order to express the conflict with being seen as different.She portrays the issue with being seen as different from others when she writes “ you may speak Spanish but you're not like me”. The passage shows man vs society conflict because the speaker is mixed culture so they are being discriminated against by their own races because they are mixed with both. Which further explains the feeling of being discriminated against based on culture is hard on people because it makes them feel alienated. Another example of the conflict between man vs society is when Pat Mora writes “viewed by Anglos as perhaps exotic,/ perhaps inferior(9-8)”. Additionally, when Pat mora writes “ viewed by anglos as perhaps exotic” she is portraying that because the speaker is mixed culture between mexican and american she is being viewed by americans as exotic and less than when she also writes “ perhaps inferior”. The passage further expresses the conflict with being mixed culture and not being accepted for who the person
