The book “Ordinary Courage” tell the story of an ordinary soldier by the name of Joseph Plumb Martin. Historians can know Josephs experiences in battle and rough winter he had throughout serving for the army because of his writings in his diary. Joseph served as a soldier for the continental army and served for eight years 1776-1783. Joseph was born in born in western Massachusetts in 1760, he was the son of a pastor; at the age of seven, he began living with his grandparents and from then on they raised him until going to the army came to his interest. In the war for the American independence, the life of a continental soldier was very rough as depicted in the book by Martin. According to Martin it would get worse. The list of sick mounted and life on Valley Forge became an unbearable nightmare. Congress had sent someone to check up n the army and they were shocked how bad the soldiers conditions were. The feet all black frozen and ill. The soldiers were just praying for hope and strength and not only that the soldiers were calm because they believed on their leader. By spring 2,000 soldiers had died n battles. Later n in that spring something good happened in Valley Forge. A German officer by the name of Baron Van Steuben trained and drilled the army of George Washington. They had become a much more disciplined and committed army stronger than before. In 1778-1781 the summer after Valley Forge the British under took a major military campaign up in the northern states where a lot of people were against independence, so the British had abandoned Philadelphia and soon warfare ended in the north. Late in the summer of 1778 King’s forces sees Savannah Georgia and soon took control of the whole state. The year 1779as well as most of 1780 was very bad for the United States because they suffered bad defeats and eventually the American started to win again, but they could not stop the British from invading
After 1778 the British shifted their attention to the southern colonies, which brought them initial prosperity when they recaptured Georgia and South Carolina for the Crown in 1779 and 1780. In 1781 British forces endeavored to subjugate Virginia, but a French naval victory just outside Chesapeake Bay led to a Franco-American siege at Yorktown and the capture of over 7,000 British soldiers. The defeat broke Britain's will to perpetuate the war. Constrained fighting perpetuated throughout 1782, while tranquility negotiations commenced. In 1783, the Treaty of Paris pacified the war and apperceived the sovereignty of the United States over the territory bounded roughly by what is now Canada to the north, Florida to the south, and the Mississippi River to the west A wider international tranquility was acceded, in which several territories were exchanged. The expensive war drove France into massive debt, which would contribute to the outbreak of a Revolution there as well.
However, Martin strayed away from this tradition and paved a way for a realistic look into the life of a Revolutionary soldier. The life of a soldier during the Revolutionary War was problematic to say the least.
The Southern Strategy had a large number of battles between the two sides, but the Americans started to win and use the momentum around October 7, 1780, The Battle of King’s Mountain. This attack was a large blow to British morale due to the soldiers being mostly loyalist. The entire point of the Southern Strategy was to build support from local British loyalists in the US, to suppress all American supporters, and to defeat all remaining American forces in the southern states. Due to the British losing this battle, the Americans

Life in the army was not what Charley expected because automatically when he lied about his age and was allowed in the war even though he wanted to join the war because so he could prove that he is a man and not a little boy. When the Union went to Fort Snelling they did not have any uniforms for him only black pants that were so short that they showed his calves, grey socks and a black felt hat that was cheap to to the point that the sprinkle it drooped over his face. he did experience some good in the war one when the Union was on there way to Manassas he got to ride on a train with nice cushions and good food, but while he was still traveling he saw some “poor” farms and children who were barely dressed.
The American Revolution was a critical turning point in American history. Following the French and Indian War, Britain ignored its previous policy of salutary neglect and began intervening in the colonies affairs through taxes, occupation of soldiers, violation of civil liberties, all the while ignoring colonial pleas for representation in Parliament. These events led to the “shot heard ‘round the world” at the Battles of Lexington and Concord in April 1775. America was now at war with Britain. Nevertheless, the impact of
A big problem in American army was that soldiers was taking care for their own interests and not for the interest their fellow soldiers. An example of this was when Martin badly injured his foot and when he went to see surgeon he was told to wait for the surgeon's game was not to be interrupted by “minor affairs”.Martin also explained his encounter with a “wounded captain” who “begged his sergeant to help him off the field”and how the captain was disregarded until Martin stepped in to help. This situation shows that instead than risking their lives for each other ,they prefer to allow their fellow colleges to die than spend extra energy in saving them. A reason for this probably was the motive for entering the army. Most of the soldiers enlisted in the army because of the money. Problems in the relations had not only soldier to soldier but also soldier to officers. Martin stated this in the comment which an officer gave him about sick soldier:”If he dies the country will be rid of someone who can do it no good.”This comment showed us that the officer did not have any respect for the sick soldier.
Ordinary courage is a book that tells the story of an ordinary man who is inlisted in the continental army in the revolutionary war. Joseph Plumb Martin is the young man fighting in this war, at the time he entered he was just a mere 16 year old kid but by the time his time in the continental army was up he became a man. This is a first person memoir of what it was like for a regular person living in a war zone, and dealing with the everyday fears of food shortage, low morale, and danger of attack. This is something that many people in todays world could not handle because even some of the old guys in the
An American Soldier in World War I is written by Liberty professor David L. Snead. It tells the story of a soldier and his fiancé relationship through World War I through letters they wrote one another. Professor Snead was introduced to the letters by a student of his Page Waugh. They were letters from her uncle to her aunt and with permission from her family he combines the letters and historical context to write a book about Browne, Marty and the war. The thesis of this book seems to be seeing the war through the eyes of a soldier in the middle of a vicious war and the relationship that sees him through it. George Browne and Martha “Marty” Johnson are two people making the best out of a tough situation and their undying love and commit
This created a turning point during the war in 1777. They had triumphed over the British at the battle of Saratoga and by 1781, the American colonies gained victory. Washington forced the British to surrender at Yorktown Virginia.
A little ways away there was a youthful private (Henry Wilson) listening in on the tall soldier’s words and his comrades comments, after he had heard enough he went to his hut so he could be alone with his thoughts. He layed on his bunk amazed that there might actually be a fight tomorrow, and he’d be in it! He dreamed of battle all his life he saw himself in many heroic struggles and shooting with skill like no other, but when he was awake he regarded war as a stain on history. War seemed a bloody and gruesome affair to the youth, but he still yearned to join several times but his mother discouraged him every time. One night however he could no longer be discouraged, he pictured himself in glorious battles and victories, so he went down to his mother and told her he was enlisting, she fought him for a bit, but he went into a town near his mother’s farm and enlisted anyway. When Henry came back he told his mom what he had done, her only reply was “The lord's will be done Henry”, and they went about their business. When Henry was standing in the doorway he saw his mother cry, but he was disappointed because he had thought up this grand powerful goodbye moment between him and his mother. She ruined it by brashly saying you're just just one little man
