The poem, “Suicide Note,” by Janice Mirikitani, is about a young Asian-American female college student who decides to end her life by jumping out of her dormitory window. Her last words, thoughts and emotions were written in the note she left behind. This note is recorded in the form of a poem, and permits the reader to see what can cause an individual to commit suicide. To begin, the girl has is a perfectionist, which pushes her to be extremely judgemental of herself. She's also unfortunately set irrational measures for herself, and was unable to get high marks on exams. As the girl waits on the ledge of her building in preparation for death, snow has begun to fall, leaving her hesitant as to what to do. It then arises to her just how upset
“Never push a loyal person to a point where they no longer care.” Innocent people will end up doing desperate things for others just the way Conrad committed suicide because his girlfriend made him. Michelle, the girlfriend forced him to kill himself so many times till one day he finally decided too because he couldn’t take it anymore. The ”Suicide By Text” case has prompted many people to discuss social issues such as depression and emotional manipulation.
In “Suicide Note”, the author Janice Mirikitani is speaking as the college student. The voice is of the young girl who believes that nothing she does is not good enough “not good enough, not pretty enough, not smart enough” (367).Using the girl’s voice is significant because the reader is able to see through her eyes on that she is not good enough and that life would have been easier if she was born a boy. the college student is writing to her parents about how sorry she is that she was not a boy and she would have been loved more if that was the case “…light in my mother’s eyes or the golden pride reflected in my father’s dream.” (367). The girl keeps apologizing to her parents about how no matter how hard she works that she is still a girl
It’s easy to feel worthless. Almost every person feels this deep emotion at some time in life, but people handle it different. Everywhere people are always judging. Judgement from parents, from family, and even from friends is inescapable. People can tear themselves down in many ways, such as through school, not feeling they look good enough, and even just not feeling like they’re ever good enough to be living on Earth. In Janice Mirikitani’s poem “Suicide Note,” it talks about an Asian-American student currently in college. She tries her hardest, she wants to succeed and make her parents proud. Her parents have high standards for her, as they want her to receive a 4.0 grade point average. Although she gives her best effort, her grade point average is still less than a 4.0, and for that reason her parents are not proud of her, she’s not their perfect, ideal daughter. So she enters that point where she no longer feels proud of her accomplishments, she feels worthless, and unintelligent. She decides to commit suicide by jumping out of a window in her college dorm. In her suicide note she apologizes to her parents for not being good enough. “Suicide Note” is a free form poem, it has no set stanzaic pattern, the sentences break in unexpected places, and the structure varies throughout the poem. It uses imagery to connect with the reader, and the stanzas are set up in way that make the lines to appear as they are falling. Through the use of enjambment, and end-stopped line the
The poem "Suicide Note" by Janice Mirikitani, is about a young Asian-American college girl who left an apology letter for her parents after jumping to her death from her dorm room window due to her failing grades, and she did not want to face her disappointed parents. This is a heartbreaking tragedy that should have been prevented if only her parents were understanding and compassionate. In the poem, the college girl apologizes to her parents for not being too smart enough for them or worthy of their respect, and disappointing them. "I apologize for disappointing you" (line 5 and line 6), even though she tries her best to please her parents, she thinks she will never stop disappointing them.

What would you do if you were given what you thought was the perfect life and it suddenly seemed to turn upside-down? Would you jump to your death or climb back up? “The Woman Hanging from the Thirteenth Floor Window” by Joy Harjo is a poem about a women who is lost in this big world we live in and trying to find herself while hanging from a thirteenth floor window. While this woman is hanging there she starts to have flashbacks about her life starting from her childhood up until now. The author goes into detail about why this woman is thinking about killing herself because of all the pressures of trying to be some she is not is catching up to her. This poem represents everyday people and how they first have to overcome themselves and
Individuals have been brought to believe that the only way to end their griefs and sorrows is to end their lives. Though suicide has become a detriment and devastating issue, it has not been presumed to be an effortless or painless act. In society, people become their own threats as they tend to isolate themselves from others which often increases this devastating issue of unsubstantial pain and long-suffering. In the poem, Tuesday 9:00 am, by Denver Butson, individuals are unable to speak and move because of their own specific problems which are burdening them and their ability to help others. The poet is enforcing the idea that individuals need to open up their eyes and be aware of others relentless despair and their struggle to reach out.
There are times when we feel like we must be perfect in other to please others. No matter if we did the best we could, if it isn’t perfect, we felt like a failure. We want the approval that comes with perfectness but perfectionism is not the same thing as striving to be our best. Perfectionism is not about healthy achievement and growth; it 's a shield. Perfectionism is refusal to accept any standard short of perfection. “Suicide Note,” by Janice Mirikitani, is about an Asian American college student who commits suicide by jumping from her dormitory window. This poem is read as the suicide note that was left behind by this young woman to apologize to her parent s for having received less than a perfect four point grade average and not being perfect in life. Her last thoughts and feelings were left on this note, describing why she did what she did. The pressure to succeed that this student felt from herself and her parents was far too much to overcome. Even though the girl worked really hard and did her very best, it wasn’t good enough in her mind and maybe in her parents’ minds to be worthy of her parents’ love or life itself and so her only option was death to atone for her sin of imperfection. Sometimes pressure to succeed that a student feels from herself and her parents is far too much to overcome.
I saw similarities in the poem “Wanting to Die” and the film Girl interrupted directed by James Mangold. Both characters see suicide as an act of escaping the pain of their lives. ‘Like carpenters they want to know which tools/they never ask why build.” Sexton’s use of simile is indicative of how she views death. She never asks her self why she is obsessed, she just allows herself to be that way. It is as if she has been hypnotised to never question her peculiar desires. She is not interested in receiving help as she just wants to know ‘what tools’ to use to in her attempt to escape life. At first I felt sorry the character didn’t want to help herself but came to understand that there was no point pitying her because she didn’t want to help
In “Wanting To Die”, Anne Sexton illustrates vividly an analogy that compares one’s desire to commit suicide and drug addiction. Though this poem may initially seem to revolve around the themes of death and suicide, there are several examples in the poem that can be referenced to drug addiction and the intentions of the drug user. In general, the tone of this poem is luridly depressing as it produces an imagery that is painstakingly dark and morbid. It encapsulates the reader within the mind of the suicidal thinker through specific personifications of suicide and death. Sexton also utilizes metaphors and similes in this poem to describe how suicide conducts a mind of its own which engages in
The idea there is that one can take responsibility for the situation of your life by committing suicide. If, say, you are the wage earner of a family and you are in unrecoverable debt, you can commit suicide, and the thought is that that is an honorable way out, that rather than evading your responsibility, you've taken responsibility. You've admitted it is my fault, and I'm going to punish myself for it. (Larissa MacFarquhar)
The poem Suicide Note, written by Janice Mirikitani (1987), talks about a young lady, who has studied in an Asian-American female college. The lady, unfortunately, committed suicide by jumping through her dormitory’s window. She left behind a note, citing reasons that led to her actions. After a critical analysis of the note, her parents were held responsible for her actions; they were pressurizing her to perform better in her exams. The poem, thus, describes the real feelings and the emotions of this young lady, who believes that committing suicide is the only option left to please her parents and to escape the enormous pressure placed on her. The persona uses voice in the poem to bring our attention to the sufferings she was going through, and that led to the devastating event. Voice in poetry is the strong words of a line, stanza or a page that creates a relationship between the audience and the persona. Voice can, therefore, be categorized as imagery, patterns of sounds created, rhythm, tone, and diction (Gahern 166). The following is a description of how the voice in Mirikitani’s suicide note helps the reader understand the persona’s reasoning.
Brendon Howell Oakley was the popular guy at Grady Peaks high school. He always had been, even as a freshman. He had medium length, wavy crimson hair that always managed to perfectly cover his right eye, ironically covering his mutation. Brendon was born with heterochromia iridium that meant his eyes were of different colours. His left eye was a dark blue shade however the right eye was a blood red colour. Thus his nickname the Crimson Curse, aptly given to him by the females of his year group who were seduced the second they looked upon his face and into his eyes. His face was sharp and refined as if too even look upon it would cause a paper cut. He was in great physical health, sporting a six-pack and being the captain of
There are times when sense fades away, consciousness flies, and the mind silences, these are the signs when death beckons upon someone. Death alone is one of the popular themes of poetry, including the final moment of one’s life before the grim reaper descends. Such topic is a truly elusive, yet plausible to be utilized. Apparently, there are two poets that do agree to this, Annë Bronte, and Dorothy Parker. It is worth questioning that an alcoholic and depressed American woman of the 20th century who was quite a prominent writer could agree about a topic with a Victorian English governess whose writings inspired by her first-hand experiences. Judging from nationality, with Annë being an English, and Dorothy being an American, it can be
Upon analyzing “14 Lines from Love Letter or Suicide Notes” by Doc Luben, the theme became evident to me. The poem compares the feelings of being in love and the feelings of wanting to commit suicide, two polar opposites. Deception, to give a mistaken impression, is apparent in his short passage. The poem relates the two sensations in a way that sheds light on how mental illness at times can be misleading and the importance of speaking up for help.
