Jamestown; the birthplace of America. A Land As God Made It: Jamestown and the Birth of America was written on July 31st, 2008, by James Horn and published by Basic Books. While reading this book, the many Native groups that were in the Americas far before Europeans navigated there will be brought up many times. Many people just believe that the Europeans traveled to the “New World”, claimed it, and that was it. But in reality, there is so much more to the story than just claiming Jamestown. The Europeans had to go through many trials just to get to the Americas, and when they reached their destination, it was not all fine and dandy. Fights with the Natives broke out multiple times, and many of the Europeans died due to different diseases and starvation. In A Land As God Made It: Jamestown and the Birth of America, discoveries of the many people that were involved in the process of turning the ‘New World’ into what we know today as America are explained.

First, the colonists were not aware of the infectious diseases that the Europeans brought to the land. For that, they do not carry any treatment that was capable of helping them to fight infections, as a result many died.

In the early years of Jamestown there was lots of death. In 1607 the first permanent English colony had arrived at James river. By 1611 roughly 400 Jamestown colonists were wounded up dead. The reasoning for many colonists dieing is because of lack of skills, bad environment, then bad relationship with natives.

Jamestown was the first permanent settlement in North America, founded in 1607 in Virginia. About 104 men and boys arrived at a new settlement in Virginia and named it after their king, James I, which was Jamestown. This new settlement was surrounded by many powhatan people that lived there. Although, even though English have found a new settlement, many colonist died. Colonists died in early Jamestown for three big reasons: their water was bad, they lacked key skills, and they had bad relations with the Powhatans.

Of all the English settlers that arrived in early Jamestown from 1607 to 1611, 80% of them died. The first three ships arrived at the mouth of Chesapeake Bay bringing just over one hundred settlers who would attempt to establish the first English settlement. Fifty miles up the James River, the colonists chose a piece of land that seemed to be full of resources, and called it Jamestown. Those who study early Jamestown often wonder why so many colonists died despite the resources that were originally thought to be available. Environmental problems, lack of settler skills, and poor relationships with Native Americans were the main contributors to the high percentage of colonists’ death.

The Virginia colony was founded by John Smith a english explorer and some other colonist in the year 1607. The colony was one of the first 13 colonies that was located on the atlantic coast of North america . The colony was named after Queen Elizabeth l. John Smith was also a solider, map maker and a trader. He was captured and taken in december of 1607 by a Powhatan hunting party. Later he was saved by chief powhatan's daughter, Pocahontas by coming in between him and a blow from her father.

Jamestown, Virginia was America’s first founded permanent English colony. It was founded on May 14, 1607 when the first English colonists arrived and discovered the land. The Virginia Company settlers landed on Jamestown looking to create a colony about 60 miles from the Chesapeake Bay. The settlement of Jamestown was one of the first cultural encounters that planted the seeds of what would eventually become the nation America is today .

A new land opportunity was a huge impact when it came into the hearts of Europeans between the fifteen and sixteen hundreds. It led most citizens leave their country and settle within the great Americas to achieve either religious freedom or a better protection system.Two of the most famous settlements of the English includes Jamestown,Virginia and Plymouth, Massachusetts. The two colonies had a government and an economic growth, which the Europeans accomplished to make, resulting a balance in society. Though, at the same time the settlers faced many hardships which they later had to overcome in the colonies.

Jamestown land was desirable because of the many trees for building houses and ships,growing crops, and good hunting ground.

The English settlement of Jamestown, Virginia, was founded on May 14, 1607 by Captain Christopher Newport and his fleet of a hundred or so Englishmen. During the next nine decades, this settlement would begin as "a verie fit place for the erecting of a great cittie(Tyler, 33)", and develop into "nothing but Abundance of Brick Rubbish, and three or four good inhabited houses(Miers, 107)." Two major factors led to the gradual decay and destruction of Jamestown: (1) The profit-before-survival attitude of the English settlers, and (2) the persistence of the Indians of the area to drive the English from their native lands.

The day I believed was the beginning of a new opportunity in becoming the man I’ve always wanted to become was really the begging of failure, starvation, and depression. I decided to leave England because of my economic problems I was facing due to the population boost, their was a lot more people and fewer jobs to go around. Even though I was still working to make a profit for the Virginia Company of London I had hope of raising a family here. The creation of Jamestown started on May 24, 1607. Captain Christopher Newport led three ships, the Susan Constant, Godspeed, and Discovery. "They named both the river and their colony after King James I of England" (Jamestown 28). They did not want to leave England completely or they would not have named those two things after him. They probably felt that they needed to name these things after him because he was the main leader and investor of the expedition. The colonies agriculture and Industry started off slow. "They failed to produce silk, grapes, and other items because of the Virginia climate" (Jamestown 29). They had trouble growing these because they thought that they would grow as they did in England but the climate was much different. They brought a lot of stuff over that they thought would work but did not and this trial and error resulted in a long process before they finally found the first product that grew or worked.
