Basically the plot of this book is that a man named Jurgis and a woman named Ona move from Lithuania to Chicago. They are also not the only ones in this family that moved to look for a better life than a life in Lithuania. Jurgis eventually finds work. Then their entire family decides to buy a house. But when they buy the house it comes with a bunch of unexpected fees, which isn’t worth it because the house is not maintained at all. With Jurgis working in a slaughter house that has absolutely no heat, the winter is pretty rough for him. Also, Ona’s boss sexually harasses her at her work. There are no boundaries when dealing with survival. For example, in the book “Night” the main character had to deal with the Holocaust in which the Jew had to battle for food when it was scarce among other starving Jews. When survival is at play our basic instincts tell us that we need to survive.

After reading over the chapter, I choose two pieces of artwork that are considered alternative media from our textbook and one piece from my own research. From all the great piece’s in our textbook, the two that stood out to me were. One is the “Untitled (Your Gaze Hits The Side Of My Face)” by Barbara Kruger. The second piece was in our previous discussion, even though we have already discussed the piece I still find myself contemplating as to what the meaning of this piece is, so I choose “Fountain” by Marcel Duchamp. The last and finally piece is one that I found on my own, “Emergence: Night and Wind” by Sayaka Kajita Ganz. All three pieces are considered as artworks with alternative media due to their meaning, and medium.

“Acquainted with the Night” is a well written poem. Before I read the poem, I believed it would express how the speaker is more familiar with the night life than day life. Instead, the poem is a sonnet comparing a sad lonely person to the darkness of the night. Darkness is symbol for sadness, loneliness, and depression. That description fits the speaker. My novel is The Sunlit Night, with Rebecca Dinerstein as the author. The protagonists of the novel are Frances and Yasha, a young artist from Manhattan and a baker's son from Brooklyn, respectively. The novel is foremost a romance, but there is more to it than that.
