A part of the book that really surprised me was what Helmuth said in the courtroom. After he and his friends were charged with conspiracy to commit high treason, Justice Fikes asked the boys if they had anything to say. None of Helmuths friends had anything to say, but when it was his turn he let all of his feelings out. Helmuth stated, “All I did was tell the truth, and you have sentenced me to die, just for telling the truth. My time is now but your time will come!” This was the most surprising part of the book to me for many reasons. First, Helmuth was already in major trouble and was very close to be sentenced to die. Also, anything negative said about the nazis was a major crime back then. Then after when Helmuth is asked by Rudi -
J.B. Priestley sets the play in a lavish and happy environment. Without Priestley even telling the audience that the play is set pre war it is obvious because of all the available luxuries and fineries such as 'champagne glasses' and 'dessert plates'. The war caused great shortages in goods and food, which led to rationing. No one in 1945 (when the play was written) would have been able to create a luxuriant celebratory dinner. This cunning use of setting deliberately reminds the audience of some of the luxuries lost because of the war.
he a question he will now answer it, he will just ask a question back.
This book kind of opened my eyes to realize that back then maybe all germans were not nazi animals but just like you and me in todays world when it comes to helping out fellow humans. It makes me wonder if we are brainwashed by our country just like Felix was. Do young people follow our leaders blindly? It raises many questions that I have yet to be answered. The best part of the book to me was the ending.
J B Priestley's Main Ideas in An Inspector Calls In the play "The Inspector Calls" by J B Priestley many views are put forward for the audience to contemplate. Priestly uses the characters to portray the views and changes that were happening and going to in the time when the play was set 1912. Mr Birling & Mrs Birling are a classic example of the typical upper-class citizens.

An inspector calls is a play which is used as a warning illustrates the clear division between higher and lower class but also between the two different generations. When we are first introduced to Mr Birling and Eric it is apparent that neither of them enjoy each others company and that they do not sustain a healthy father son relationship. Both character have different priorities as Mr Birling chooses business and welfare over his son, whilst Eric chooses drinking over socialising with his family. Mr Birling, a very conceited man, illustrates the greed of wealth and reputation in the higher class society, so much so that he pushed his son away to allow his future son-in-law Gerald to take main priority.
Priestley’s Main Aim in An Inspector Calls JB Priestly wrote ‘An Inspector Calls’ to enhance the message that ‘we don’t live alone. We are members of one body. We are responsible for each other’. This is something Priestly felt strongly about and he succeeded in representing his views through the character of the Inspector in the play itself.
It pays a great deal of attention to what was going on outside the bunker and provides fascinating accounts of what was happening to other Nazi leaders, such as Himmler, Goering, Speer, Doenitz, and many others. It also does an excellent job of placing Hitler's last days within the fuller context of both Nazi and 20th-century German history.
A number of other issues that were around at the time the play was set
In the short story Lamb to the Slaughter written by Roald Dahl the author shows us a different perspective to violence that is rarely used. The protagonist of the story is not necessarily a hero. The author wants us to understand that just because someone is the protagonist doesn’t mean they can’t be violent. They don’t need any hard-core training or even a real weapon! Anyone and everyone has the capability of being violent.

In the play 'An Inspector Calls', many contrasts and paradox's are present and at the centre of them all is the character known as Inspector Goole. However, the inspector is not any ordinary inspector. I believe that the inspector is used as a device by Priestley to explore the wider themes of the play and to depict other characters true personalities. This essay will explore some of the techniques Priestley presents the inspector in An Inspector Calls.
Through the roughest times in life, we come across crises that reveal the true character in those around us. Those who are strong are divided from the weak and the followers divide from the leaders. In the novel, The Grapes of Wrath, author John Steinbeck presents the character Ma Joad who serves an important role as the rock that keeps the family together. The Joad family, apart from many families in Oklahoma, is forced to leave their homes in search of work and better opportunities; California not only leaves them in poverty but despair. But through it all Ma Joad is the leader of the family that exhibits selflessness in order to protect and secure her family.
Secondly, Swami Sivananda once stated, “Put your heart, mind, and soul into even your smallest acts. This is the secret of success” (Swami 25 October, 2015). Provided that, one’s heart composes of two functions, in which one is to pump blood and the other one, is to embody one’s behaviour, emotions, feelings, and personality. Moreover, Andrew displays the capability of controlling his behaviour, emotions, and treats other people appropriately. Throughout the movie, Andrew was able to experience a diverse amount of emotions such as love, jealousy, affection, being scared, and happiness. Above all, Andrew felt devastated and heartbroken as he overheard Little Miss being told by her father that she “cannot invest your emotions in a machine” (Bicentennial Man, 1999). Unfortunately, Andrew is once more treated as a household appliance and more importantly felt sad, since it was impossible to be with the only person he loved, which was Little Miss. As a result, Andrew gains this desire to have facial expressions, nervous system, and etc.… Nevertheless, it is because of Andrews emotions, which allowed him to persevere and build his true identity, therefore one’s emotions is strictly confined to that individual 's identity. With this concept in mind, one can say that emotions are potent and relevant to one’s being because it adds depth and meaning to them, when compared to other individuals. In addition, these attributes makes an individual more of a different and sophisticated
