The book is aa coming of age letter-style novel written by Stephen Chbosky. This is the story of a fifteen-year-old male teen going through changes in his life. Charlie has an older brother and sister, but is still quite coy. He finds friends in Sam and Patrick, whom introduce Charlie to their buddies, and goes to parties with them. He goes through different types of relations with these people, being their friend to not socializing with them, because they were upset with Charlie, to ultimately reuniting as friends, writing all these thoughts to an unknown pen-pal. This novel takes place in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in the suburbs. According to the dates, the year is 1991-1992, so the stories takes place that school year, and the epilogue happens in August. Charlie is the main character in the book, and he really has no enemies, besides his sister, who he makes peace with at the end of that school year. If I were to say anything, id say that the antagonist would be society. Sam and Patrick also play important roles, but are really just sub characters, since the book is based from Charlie’s point of view. Charlie is a round, dynamic character because he goes through the process of puberty and read his thoughts and his traits. Sam and …show more content…
The two kids teach Charlie about life, and how to enjoy it. During that time, he develops a crush on Sam, which led to the disbandment of their squad. Charlie must wait it off and think about what he has done, and also wonder what he will do after his friends graduate. The internal conflict is that Charlie must learn to cope with what will happen to his friends after graduation and the feelings of puberty, which is also his external conflict. The main conflict was that he near jeopardized his friendship with his friends, and the outcome was that he waited it out and led to everything being

He grew up with drunk parents and usually gets cursed out by his own mother. He one day gets a card with 3 addresses on them. The first one is a man who is drunk and repeatedly abuses his wife. Ed keeps coming back every night, seeing this same event occur periodically. He does nothing but watch; he’s petrified to step in.

The book is like a life map for struggling teenagers in high school and could be beneficial on making them feel better about themselves. Charlie expresses the feeling of relief Patrick has when he first has relations with another male; “Patrick said it was like the weight of the whole world left both their shoulders” (Chbosky 43). Charlie stating what Patrick says may give some teenagers courage to come out to some people, or maybe just let someone know. Patrick is a very influential person in Charlie’s life; he makes Charlie actually feel like good about himself. When Charlie begins to cry, they made a toast; “I didn’t know why they did that, but it was very special to me that they did” (Chbosky 38). The book is a feel-good novel that helps teenagers in a time of
This book is placed in the genre new adult fiction that is a newer genre of fiction with protagonists in the 18–30 age bracket which does not fit this book since the protagonist at the end might have reached 18. It is a better fit in the young adult genre. The author does not give the reader any idea regarding when in time the story takes place or the protagonist's actual age. It is after indoor bathrooms but before cell phones, my guess is the 70’s and/or the 80’s. I must admit I am a bit biased since most of it takes place in MI where I am from it is such a beautiful state.
The story shows you how Charlie deals with love, drugs, and relationships throughout the school year. Charlie and a senior named Patrick, share an important relationship throughout the story due to Patrick helping Charlie with socializing with others, experiencing different things that Charlie normally would not do if he did not meet Patrick, and helping him cope with his mental illness.
I just want you to know that that you’re special...and the only reason I’m telling you is that I don’t know if anyone else ever has.” This shows how Bill truly believes in Charlie's ability and make him feel a sense of being special when he doesn’t feel like it. Overall Charlie is shaped the way he is because of the bad experiences he has endured when younger that made him become isolated and not let people in to know the real him. The theme of the book friendship can take you far, since Charlie at first didn’t have many friend he lived in the shadows and did not enjoy normal teenage activities. Later when he get friends that being to encourage him and help him he explores his boundaries. Without the support he received he might have fallen deeper into the pit of depression he was lost in, but because of the people around him that filled in the gaps he was able to get his life back together and be more carefree. In general I would recommend this book because you can read the point of view of someone who has been through so much and was able to come out fine in the end. Also this book deals with real life topic that can be very controversial which is why not many people bring them

He was a troubled teenager and has experienced some unfortunate things in the past. For instance, his best friend, Michael committed suicide and his favorite Aunt Helen died in a car accident during his seventh birthday which haunted him from that moment until his freshman year. Throughout the novel, Charlie attempts to change himself and to become more involved in life as he deals
The novel illustrates a lot of teenage-related issues, such as, drugs use, sexuality, finding an identity, family, friends, high school life, love, and relationships. Charlie’s friends gave him the chance to expose some of these things, as well as his family, his English teacher Bill and even his curious self, and that plays a huge role in developing his identity, self-esteem, and the way he views the world.
At the beginning, Charlie is without friends and is rather alone. He is very gifted and quite an overthinker which expels him from the usual teenage social groups. This changes, however, when he meets Sam and Patrick at a football game. They expose him to all new experiences. Resulting from his new friendships, is his relationship with Mary Elizabeth, his experimentations with drugs, and new knowledge of being a person. During this time, he is increasingly happy because Charlie was finally living.
There are many things I could tell you about this book. The main character, Maddie, does not like the way her father thinks. He is head of digital school which took place of public school. Instead of people going out and socializing, everything is at your fingertips. He believes Maddie meets a boy named Justin at a study group he invited her to. What she didn’t know was he was a part of an anti-Digital school movement. He changes her life in so many ways through the course of this book.
