Bless Me, Ultima a novel by Rudolfo Anaya. Anaya has been imperative for Chicano literature was the first in a trilogy of novels that brought to life through writing a search for a young boy’s personal identity. Anaya expresses in this book the social changes experienced by a young Chicano boy in New Mexico area during the 1940s, Anaya in Bless Me, Ultima covers a two-year period during the end of World War II and concentrates on the experiences of a young, but serious boy Antonio who attempts to make sense of the world around him. At the same time is growing into his own sometimes with differing chances with those of his parents. This was where I found that Tony was so very different he is so much more thoughtful than the other children in his town, compared to his unruly and ill-mannered group of friends. Antonio still does show some traits that are typical for children his age, like being uneasy when leaving his mother to start school. He is extra sensitive to find his place in the world, as he is trapped between two competing cultural visions. Antonio is in search of role models to follow as he embarks on a quest for his destiny. In the process in finding himself Tony serves as the apprentice to Ultima the curandera, and Tony adapts to going to school, learning about his Christian faith, and an eyewitnesses some fatal events. Along the way on Tony’s path with Ultima he finds that there are so many clues to the answers to his questions. Answers that are incited by his dreams and I think this is why he has difficulties understanding the world around him. The complications only seem so difficult because he still is so young it is his powerless to completely comprehend the world around him.
