When you think about construction workers what comes to your mind? Do you think the stereotypical thoughts that almost everyone thinks about construction workers? I think that construction workers don’t often get the credit that they deserve for the hard work that they do. Having a boyfriend that is a construction worker makes me realize how little credit they do get for their hard work that they put in week in and week out. In the short story “Shout”, by Dagoberto Gilb, the protagonist is a Hispanic construction worker. The title of this short story describes this story perfectly, because that’s just what the protagonist likes to do, “Shout”! This story is about a construction worker who comes home from a long hot day at work and is yelling
It is alarming to know that each year there are over 4,500 scaffold injuries and 65 deaths (Occupational Safety and Health Administration [OSHA], 2016). In addition, there is a high risk for construction workers to be struck from objects falling off scaffolds. With these facts in mind, the Occupational Safety and Health Review Commission’s (OSHRC) 2013 case of the Secretary of Labor v Performance Contracting, Inc. (PCI) raises questions as to why violations of OSHA’s scaffold standards are sometimes considered “other-than serious.” Understanding that OSHA gives the Secretary of Labor the tasks of rulemaking and enforcement of its rules, it also gives the task of carrying out the legal process to the commission which both parties accepted, as well as PCI “engaging as a business affecting interstate commerce” (Secretary of Labor v. PCI, 2013, pp. 2-3). Knowledge of the case’s background, parties involved, arguments presented, cases used to reach a verdict, and final ruling provide insight to the penalties assessed, significance, and personal opinion.
If there is 'high risk' construction works, obtaining safe work method statements for all such work. High risk work includes, but is not limited to, working at heights where the fall is greater than 2 metres, demolition,
People’s come from another country to make a new beginning in the United Stated struggle the challenges of being an immigrant and migrant worker. Both share similar challenges such as discrimination, language barrier, salary and citizenship. However, the only difference between them, migrant worker do not stay in one place to live and work, they are consistently all over the place by their jobs. Over the past two decades the number of low-skilled workers in the United States has increased because of immigration, both legal and illegal. (Chiswick, 2006)
In this paper the topic of immigrant labor is that people from around the world have long immigrated to the United States seeking employment opportunities to have a better life style, but while the U.S. economy has benefited by the talents and energy of migrants and immigrants there have also been concerns. According to Immigrant Labor (2015),
Would it be morally right to judge someone based upon the color of their skin? In To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, numerous more people living in the town of Maycomb County start to ask themself that question. People living in Maycomb often see just black and white, they judge people based on their ethnic backgrounds rather than their personalities. Atticus however is different, he believes that in order to understand a person you must first walk around in their skin and see how they live. Harper Lee puts in the names of certain people in the novel, to teach people about freeing people from being guilty because of their skin color even when not many people are ready.
Since it was built, the Empire State Building has been attracting millions of tourists every year. This building is not only a national landmark and icon of New York City but a symbol of man’s attempt to achieve the impossible. The skyscraper is also the star in many movies such as An Affair to Remember, Sleepless in Seattle and King Kong. It stands out among the city’s skyline so people arriving by air, sea, or land can always pick out its distinctive shape (Britton 4). The Empire State Building is considered one of the eight wonders of the world and the people, the purpose, the construction, and the difficulties that went along with this wonder all started with a race to the sky.
As the daughter of an immigrant, I have witnessed the various barriers faced by immigrants, and this experience has motivated me toward my career objective. According to the Pew Research Center Hispanic Trends Project, there were about 11.3 million immigrants living illegally in the United States in 2013 (Passel et al., 2014). These immigrants come from all parts of the world for several different reasons. Whether to provide better resources for their family back home or to live a better life, these immigrants usually work in environments that can be harmful and dangerous to their health.
107). Deregulation or “roll back neoliberalism” that began in the 1970’s has created an informal economy in the US allowing some industries to employ workers under substandard conditions utilizing “subcontracting” relationships as a means of evading regulatory measures (Theodore, 2006 p. 253). These informal economies are dependant on attracting workers who are willing to suffer substandard working conditions, in the US these workers tend to be undocumented immigrants, due to their need to evade the government (Theodore, 2006 p. 254). A study completed in 2012 highlights the impact poor US immigration policy combined with neoliberal deregulation policies has had on the construction industry in Austin, Texas. “A major mechanism for control of labor costs is the deregulation and informalization of this sector – largely through the low hourly wages and unfair treatment of Latin American immigrants and other minority groups. The subcontracting system, for instance, was not common in construction before the 1980s, and gained hegemony during the period of deregulation, and is now part of the modus operandi of the construction (and other) industries. In 1973 more than 80% of construction workers were unionized, while today it is

At twelve years of age, I awoke to three urgent nocks. Rubbing the sleep from my eyes, I opened the door to be greeted by one of my dad’s friend from work informing me my father had fallen from the ladder picking cherries that morning and was being taken to the hospital. Fear took over my body at the thought of what could have happened to my dad. With only my three other siblings at home and my mom working, we had to wait until my dad got home or my mom. Fortunately nothing too serious happened to my dad that morning. What had happened made me realize the dangers migrant workers face every day they work.
Lenander et.al, (2015) define polypharmacy as the consequences of multiple concurrent medications taken to primarily manage existing health problems such as hypertension and diabetes. Polypharmacy is a typical problem among older adults. Currently, adults within the age bracket of 65 years and above take five or more medications on a weekly basis, 57% of which are women and 44% are men. Besides, the prevalence of polypharmacy is about 12% of both women and men that take ten medications and above per week (Lenander et.al, 2015). Understanding this issue on multiple levels is essential in helping to decrease the prevalence of polypharmacy and medication errors. This problem is a leading cause of many negative outcomes associated with healthcare. Not only physical and psychological problems for the patient but also social and economical problems for the healthcare industry as a whole.
