Females nowadays are said to be earning more degrees than males. The idea of men being careless and irresponsible towards knowledge would immediately pop into your head. People assume boys are the problem regarding education but they in fact are not, schools are the issue that we should be discussing. Amanda Ripley (2018), in “Boys Are Not Defective”, suggests that there are people who say that girls always outperform boys in education and there are people who say boys are willing to study if they have a positive impact from their teachers and school. She discusses how gender is not the issue here it is the motivation. She conducts several researches and interviews to prove her point. As a previously high school student, I would often be motivated by my female teachers to study more and aim for higher grades. On the other hand, my brother’s male teachers would often find ways to demotivate students and just finish their material instead of actually educating them. Therefore, I was positively impacted by my teachers and have the motivation to complete my school work. Not all male teachers are violent towards boys but most would resort to hitting. Being violence towards a student to teach them is the worst solution you can ever have. Students tend to hate school because of what teachers do to them. It is significant that people understand why boys tend to be careless towards education and are not motivated. “Research suggests that boys receive more negative teacher feedback concerning failure to follow directions, whereas girls receive more positive feedback concerning compliance” (as cited in Morgan, 2001). This suggests that because of the undesirable response boys receive from their teachers they tend to become careless and irresponsible towards schooling. Therefore, teachers can be retrained and develop better strategies and relationships with their students. Receiving encouraging feedback from your teachers regarding your knowledge increases your intuition. She mentions in her article several sources that prove her point and she interviewed several students and observed results that assisted her argument. She also discusses Oman’s quota system which has two sets of admissions: one lower bar for men and one higher bar for women. Every year, the Ministry of Education proclaims the quota, liable on the punishment and the applicant pool. This quota system is a temporary solution that has a lifetime impact on students. Ripley’s opinion regarding the issue is that schools are the problem therefore, schools can work on improving and this will be resolved. This issue has a positive impact on society since we can retrain our teachers into forming better relationships with their students and they will be able to communicate with one another. Believing that boys are not imperfect is beneficial to the society because we can now consider the negative impact of school on students. I believe that what the author is arguing is truthful and agree with her argument. People should know that it is not their boys that do not want to do well in school. It is the system that makes them dislike the idea of education. This makes my opinion have a positive impact on society because principals will now know how to fix their system and reassure their teachers. Now that we are aware of this
