Defining the Sugar Baby Firstly, what is a sugar baby. Jenna Homan, defines the sugar baby relationship where a Sugar Daddy enriches a Sugar Babies life by helping to fund her goals. In turn, the sugar baby offers friendship, and in some cases sex, back towards the sugar daddy. In a sugaring relationship, the sugar daddy defines the relationship, but both parties have a specific expectations of the relationship. Some sugar babies have sex in order to receive and allowance. This is the standard definition of prostitution. However, for other sugar babies, sex isn't on the table until they form a relationship. The sugar baby/daddy relationship can be summed up to as human nature. Men are commonly attracted to beautiful things, while women are typically attracted to a strong man. Men have also historically paid for a women in order when engaging in a relationship by paying for dinner or and transportation. The sugar daddy/sugar baby relationship shows the three things most desired in today’s society, “youth, wealth, and beauty.” Ruth Padawer, writer for the New York Times Magazine, writes, “Heterosexual relationships, including marriage, have long involved economic transactions, but Bailey points out that when men provided financial security, they traditionally did so in exchange for a woman's sexual virtue (and potential to bear and rear children,) not for sexual thrills. For that, they often turned to prostitutes and mistress, involving a frank money-for-sex exchange.” The sugar baby relationship is a directly linked to the new generation's values on sex and relationships. Traditionally, a prostitute would be engaging a direct sex for money exchange, but now men want someone where they can also have a friendship/companionship with. Also, what’s most startling is the number of sugar babies on college campus. It goes to show how unreasonable the cost of college has become, where sugar daddies are now taking on the role to send their sugar babies through college. In 2013, on SeekingArrangement 44 percent of its 2.3 million “babies” are in college. I plan on talking also about the sexualization of sugar babies here, because some of the most successful sugar babies I seen have had some kind of breast enhancement surgery. But, then this links to the paragraphs about whether it’s empowering or not because women are oversexualized so how can you be free really when you’re forced to portray
