Out of the drugs that are popular in Toledo, heroine and cocaine are two of the most popular to be abused. Although there are many illegal drugs that are popular, one drug popular among many college campuses for abuse is Adderall and although it is prescribed for legal use many abuse it illegally. Because of the popularity among college kids across the nation, I have decided to do research for my third drug report on the effects of Adderall, specifically when abused and not when prescribed. During my research I will look into the physiological impacts of the drug, the psychological impacts of the drug, the possible social impacts of the drug, how many people use the substance, how many people die from this substance, how the drug impacts a …show more content…

Adderall has many short and long term effects that show their many effects not only physiologically but psychologically as well. Many of these effects are felt both by people who use the drug for medical purposes and for those who abuse the drug, but many of the negative effects are mostly felt by those who abuse Adderall. Positively, Adderall increases the heart rate and the blood flow to the muscles (Effects of Adderall Use, 2015). Of the short-term negative side effects there is a chance a person may experience weight loss or loss of appetite which could lead to malnutrition and other effects such as dry mouth, trouble sleeping, restlessness, and other cardiac issues such as an irregular heart rhythm or increased blood pressure (Effects of Adderall Use, 2015). When Adderall is misused or abused a user may experience more fatigue and a decrease in concentration after the drug has worn off (Effects of Adderall Use, 2015). Out of 7 million Americans who abuse prescription drugs about 1.1 million of those people abuse stimulants such as Adderall (Sciuto, 2013). In 2005, it was found that 2.3 million teenagers abused prescription stimulants, which means drugs such as Adderall and Ritalin (Prescription Drug Abuse Statistics, 2015). This is an extremely large number of people who abuse this drug and who may suffer many of the negative consequences of abusing a stimulant. Although it is hard to find statistics on deaths on statistics only based on Adderall use and abuse, there are many deaths associated with prescription drug use and abuse of stimulants. In 2005, out of the millions of drug-related hospital visits there were almost 600,000 visits associated with prescription drugs (Prescription Drug Abuse Statistics, 2015). Prescription drugs that year were also responsible for more deaths than many street drugs combined (Prescription Drug Abuse Statistics, 2015).
