Dr. Tedros, director of the World Health organization, refers to the harmful and hazardous use of psychoactive substances. He explains how the use of these drugs can lead to a change in behavior, a strong desire to take the drug, difficulty in controlling its use, and a severe change in behavior. He then explains the many policies his organization has to prevent the use of non medication cannabis. Tobacco contains nicotine which is an ingredient that can lead to addiction. This is why many people find it hard to quit smoking these products. The author also explains how there are many to smoke, chew, or sniff tobacco. Tobacco can also affect your brain because when consumed the product, it absorbs into a person’s blood. It then immediately stimulates the adrenal glands to release adrenaline. This, along with lung cancer, chronic bronchitis, and emphysema are results of the consumption of tobacco. The author also explains the other factors tobacco has that can lead someone into addiction such as irritability, problems paying attention, trouble sleeping, increased appetite, and powerful cravings for tobacco. This information is important for our project because it describes the effects tobacco can have on someone. The author also states that consuming too much tobacco can lead to an overdose. Volkow explains that drug addiction is a chronic disease characterized by uncontrollable drug seeking and use despite harmful consequences and changes in the brain. The addiction starts when someone consumes a drug, Nora explains. But as time goes on, the person’s ability to stop the use of the drug becomes very difficult. The reason behind this is that there is a dangerous substance used in the majority of these products called nicotine, which is very addictive. However, there is a treatment for this addiction, but it involves a lengthy treatment. This treatment should help the person by stopping the use drugs, staying drug-free, and being productive in the family, at work, and in society. The addiction is treated with detoxification, behavioral counseling, medication, an evaluation and treatment for co-occurring mental health issues such as depression and anxiety, and a long-term follow-up to prevent relapse. Some drugs can vary in treatment, but all go through a similar process. This article is important for our project because it shows the numerous ways someone can get treatment. According to SAMHSA's National Survey on Drug Use and Health, 22.5 million people (8.5 percent of the U.S. population) aged 12 or older needed treatment for drug or alcohol
