Imagine what the world would be like if there were not extracurricular activities such as sports, student government, and other organizations. For example one such organization is the Boy Scouts which has produced many American leaders such as Gerald Ford, Donald Rumsfeld, and Robert Gates. That is just one organization that I would count as an extracurricular, just imagine what the world would be like if extracurriculars like sports teams, student government and other organizations did not exist. Sports and extracurriculars are important in the fact that they develop important intangibles, enable students to get jobs, and produce morally straight individuals.

In an article written by Amanda Ripley and Kevin Kniffin one of the authors asked employers about what they thought about student athletes and they said,”Hiring managers expect former student-athletes to have more self-confidence, more self-respect, and better leadership skills than people who participated in other high school extracurriculars.” (Should Schools Eliminate Sports Teams?).As previously stated sports, develop intangibles, and from this quote it is obvious to see that hiring managers value the intangibles developed in sports. Playing sports puts student athletes into pressure filled situations and in many jobs there are pressure situations. If someone has self confidence and more self respect they are more likely to do a good job in such situations. Leadership is what helps companies move forward, and at some point down the line, people can be considered for leadership positions. I would rather have someone that is confident and has a high degree of self respect over someone who is not confident and does not have self respect. If someone is not confident or has low self esteem and putting them in a pressure filled environment could have dramatic consequences.Maureen Groppe has said,”Forty-seven percent of ex-student-athletes reported thriving in three or more of five well-being measures, compared with 40% of grads who did not play NCAA sports. The measures are sense of purpose, social …show more content…
For some, it is a way to make a better life, for others it is just a way to keep themselves busy. Yes, people who participate in them do have risks, but they also get great benefits. Extracurriculars can change people, help them discover their passion in life. I for one do appreciate the benefits of extracurriculars and I highly support
Extracurriculars are there for students to enjoy activities other than their academics, but it is also a way to shows that they can focus on education and outside life at the same time. Some students do not take school seriously enough. Coming to school might just be a way for athletes to participate in the sport they want to. Not every students has exceeding academic skills, however, anyone can succeed if they just try. Being able to multitask will behoove the students in the future. Undergraduates tend to separate their school and outside life. Older adults do this as well; but instead of school, it is work they have to worry about. During exam week, students will want to study and it will take away their eating and sleeping time. Eating and studying is a vigorous way to
My involvement in extracurricular activities has helped me grow as a person over the past four years of high school. I have learned how to be more responsible, reliable, as well as how to be a team player and work well with others. I enjoyed playing softball and CYO volleyball and basketball. I knew it was not just about the game I was also about the people. I did my best to help my teammates.
In my point of view, extracurricular activities are what shape a student into what they are or become. SkillsUSA is a career and technical student organization that helps students obtain the leadership, hands on, professional, and employability skills that America is searching for. Although at first, students do not find this extracurricular activity as interesting as a sport, they fail to recognize that this organization is for students and ran by students. As Pope John Paul II said, “The future starts today, not tomorrow.” Today, I know that SkillsUSA is helping me take a step closer to what I want to do in my
They choose to do extracurricular activities that will let the individual’s mind grow, to be able to have the knowledge to better their chances later in college and
Jan Kievlen, Positive Climates for Learning Specialists at the York Region District School Board stated that, ""When parents remember why they are enrolling their child into a sport, it helps them to keep the focus on the development of the character rather than just ‘winning’. It also is important to keep the sport ‘fun’” (tvoparents.tvo.org, 2011). One may believe children play sports just to have fun in their free time, but it also has a positive impact on them. ““Children’s participation in organized extracurricular activities has been associated with positive short-and-long-terms outcomes”” (Guèvremont, 2011). Therefore, extra-curricular activities should be mandatory in a student’s life because it helps them gain new skills, exercise and is a stress reliever.
I conducted an interview with Dr. Martinez, the current principal of Early College High School explained that many of clubs that the school creates have become co-curricular activities or “classes” for two reasons: it easier to fund and to find a coordinator. Up until our interview, I was not aware of this process. However, I have witnessed this first hand as soccer was once an actual school sport, but it eventually became a class. Furthermore, Dr. Martinez noted that it is easier to get an extracurricular activity approved through either CCC or OCC than the school’s own district. Although the students do get to take part in an activity they have some interest in, it is rather considered a class rather than an extracurricular rather than an actual class. This becomes problematic because when students begin to apply for colleges, they are unable to consider as extracurricular because they are taking part in the extracurricular during the school schedule and not outside the classroom. Jeff Brenzel, Dean of Undergraduate Admissions at Yale University, explains in an interview posted by CollegeBoard, he explains that many colleges prefer students that are well rounded such that they are doing well in academics and involved in an organization. However, he explains that they prefer students that are involved in a organization that they are interested regardless of how popular or how bizarre the organization. This then
One reason why I believe schools should not be able to limit our extracurricular activities is because no one knows what I am capable of better than myself. For example, I always thought I was a good basketball player until I tried wrestling. I did both wrestling and basketball at the same time for almost a month till I had to drop out of basketball because I figured I am a much better wrestler than a basketball player. Another example could be Matthew Stafford. For those who do not know who Matthew Stafford, he is a pro-NFL quarterback for the Detroit Lions. He was the first draft in 2009 for Detroit Lions. While he was in high school he played varsity Baseball and he also was considered to be one of the best high school quarterbacks in the United States ranked ahead
In an article, an expert said ¨Although academic work is vital, these extra-curricular activities are also significant for students because they teach responsibility and teamwork¨(¨Reasons Why the School Day Should Be Shorter¨). Colleges
Universities have sports like baseball, football, basketball, track, swim, and many more. Most community schools don’t have sports teams and they are really missing out. Sports are really big parts of most universities and that’s what makes a lot of the kids want to go there. On the other hand there are extra activities outside of class as well. The importance of extracurricular activities on college campuses is well established. The primary goals of extracurricular activities focus on the individual student level, the institutional level. Extra activities outside of class can help people and many ways, jobs love to look for what people can do outside the class room as well. These activities can help people relive stress from school, or it’s just something they enjoy doing in your time, which nothing is wrong with that. These activities at universities are more than likely going to be offered at community
When students participate in extracurricular activities they learn lessons and concepts of leadership, teamwork, organization, analytical thinking, problem solving, and time management. In high school if a student wants to do a sport or other activity they will pick the activity that they like and enjoy. This is the kind of decision making skill that could help determine the type of career path for a student. By participating in extracurricular activities youth can find something they enjoy learn to use this in a career. “Participating in certain extracurricular activities having to do with the field that the student is interested in could help them find a job. If someone is looking at a resume for a potential employee, and they see they have experience or interest in what they are looking for, they will be more likely to hire that person” (Massoni). Having been apart of a particular extracurricular activity can be a positive influence in a job resume. This will cause students to find a new ambition in a career. Even on college applications these activities will affect if a student will be accepted, and in some circumstances many activities can earn a student thousands of dollars in scholarships (Massoni). Extracurricular activities can benefit students in teaching them long term commitments. When youth participate in
Some of the extra-curricular activities I am involved in include Science National Honor Society, National Honor Society, and Amnesty International. These three particular activities are helping me shape the person I am today. The amount of work one has to put into these activities reflects the amount of work I will one day put into my future studies and work. In these extra-curricular activities I am expected to participate with my community outside of school. This has and will continue to help me be more social with others, be comfortable working in teams, improve my grades, and be informed about certain happenings.
Children who participate in organized sports are usually told that to be part of it that you must maintain a 2.5 grade point average and sometimes higher. This being said shows that in order to be successful you have to not only work hard on whatever activity you participate in but also in school. For an example my sister participates in track and she is one of the top runners in her middle school, but half way through the academic school year she started slacking of and ended up with a 1.2 gpa. Most people believe that star players gets a pass when it
Schools have been debating if they should get rid of sports in their districts, because they’re wondering if these extracurricular activities have been causing a problem for their students. While some scholars agree with this change most teachers are rejecting this change and want them to stay. Therefore, schools should have sports because they can help students relieve themselves of stress, kids can learn to work as a team, and children of all kinds can have equal opportunities to play them.
Sports programs have been an integral part of all schools. They support the academics of the school and therefore foster success in life. These programs are educational and help produce productive citizenship. They help students experience and build skills that may help them in their future, like interpersonal and time management skills. Education may kindle the light of knowledge, but sports help to maintain the proper physique. Sports are also an important means of entertainment and a use for energy after long hours of study. Sports increase a student’s performance not only in the classroom but also in their life.
So why are extracurricular activities important? Extracurricular activities shape how a person acts within him or herself, in the community, and their performance in school. Schools should highly encourage every student to be in some type of activity (Hollrah).
