Struggle between Good and Evil in The Scarlet Letter and Macbeth
It is said that “all conflict in literature is, in its simplest form, a struggle
between good and evil.” Indeed, the fundamental conflict of human nature is that of
darkness and light; and as a mirror to life, the conflicts in literature is not different
from those in human nature. The struggle of good and evil is shown in Nathaniel
Hawthorne’s The Scarlet Letter, which portrays the spiritual battle between and evil
man and a sinned minister, as well as the minister’s internal turmoil. William
Shakespeare’s Macbeth, similarly describes a man’s moral decay and the vengeance of
the wronged good people. Both authors use various literary elements and

end of the novel, however, the dying minister finally gathers up the courage to expose
his scarlet A, thus earning his illegitimate daughter’s forgiveness and escaping external
damnation of his soul. “Thou hast escaped me,” exclaims Chillingsworth, whose soul
remains unredeemed, as well as unredeemable. In the end, good has, in a sense,
triumphed over evil.
Shakespeare’s play Macbeth also revolves around the question of goodness and
evil. The very theme of the play is how an honest man can be dehumanized by
temptation. The character of Macbeth initially is the “valiant cousin, worthy
gentleman” of old king Duncan. Tempted by the three Weird sisters and pressed by his
evil wife, Macbeth gradually becomes a ruthless and corrupt ruler. At first he
assassinates Duncan to climb onto the throne, and then murders his best friend
Banquo in fear and greed. Finally, the last breath of humanity and goodness leaves
him when he orders the slaughtering of Macduff’s entire household. At the end of the
play when he receives the news of his wife’s death, he only remarks indifferently: “she
should have died hereafter.” The bloody tyrant’s downfall, however, is foreshadowed by
one of the witches’ second prophecies: “Beware Macduff.” After receiving the
devastating news of the massacre, Macduff is resolved more
Battles and fights are some examples of conflict in most fictional stories. They can be many different fights, like the epic battle between good and evil, or a kingdom defending their land from enemies. When people think of the word ‘battle’, they may think of climatic sword fights and war. But sometimes, battles can take place inside of a person. Perhaps a character may have conflicting aspirations and desires that may cause an internal battle and maybe result in something catastrophic. Or perhaps a character has opposing personalities that might clash and cause something important to happen. In many works of literature, the writer
As living and breathing human beings people are bound to experience some type of conflict. Conflict can be present within a person, between two people, between a person and forces of nature, and even between a person and their society. Conflict is defined as the struggle that shapes the plot in a story (Clugston, 2014, ch.4sect.1 para.4). When reading a piece of literature, especially a short story, one should pay special attention to the central conflict because it is the key element of the story (Clugston, 2014). In the Novel “Something Wicked This Way Comes” by Ray Bradbury, the characters support the Universal Theme of “Good Vs Evil”. The characters are divided into two groups; those who act morally right and are good-hearted, and those who just do not seem to have any sense of empathy and are blinded by selfishness and greed and choose to do harm for no other reason than the thrill of it. The protagonists face a series of battles with themselves and their sense of who they are, as well as against the evil forces. This evilness is reflected on the carnival freaks who constantly use fear and manipulation as a weapon to make all people egotistical and greedy, whereas our good characters utilize laughter, love and friendship to defeat the evil that is acting upon them.

As works of literature mature, the line between good and bad begins to become unclear. With Shakespeare’s works especially, things are usually not what they initially seem; a character may reveal to be the protagonist, antagonist, or even an anti-hero. A character may take actions that border on the antagonistic side, but still be the protagonist in which the audience is emotionally, though not always ethically, invested in. An anti-hero can be viewed simply as a protagonist who lies somewhere on the spectrum of villain and hero; never quite touching each end. In his play, Macbeth, Shakespeare makes it clear that Macbeth is really an anti-hero through his changing public appearance, his encounters with the witches, and his feelings concerning his own actions.
Conflict can take on many forms in one’s life, such as conflict with self, with society, with religion and with others. Nathaniel Hawthorne’s The Scarlet Letter, develops the theme of conflict through the moral sin of Hester Prynne. Conflict is observed through Hester’s difficulties with the townspeople, challenges with the Puritan way of life, struggles with herself and tensions with Roger Chillingworth. Committing sin in the Puritan society leads to a great deal of conflicts.
Conflict is a normal part of everyday life and is an issue that every one faces. It is defined as a state of struggle or fight caused by the actual or perceived opposition or threat of needs, values, interest, status and power. Conflict is also a very important, common and necessary element in stories. It allows the author to add excitement and suspense thus making the story entertaining for readers. In stories, conflict is classified as any difficulty or problem that involves the characters and usually takes place in the formats of a character opposing them self, a character opposing another and a character opposing an object. The “Yellow Wallpaper” by Charlotte Perkins Gilman perfectly depicts conflicts and exemplifies the various types
There is a constant war waging between good and evil in everyday life. It may be a war between two fractions that feel they are both in the right or an internal battle of good and evil. In William Shakespeare’s Macbeth the titular character and his wife are battling against the true nature of themselves and in each other. Although they are known and seen by others as virtuous, their unsatisfactory greed and ambition lead both characters to become immoral.
When Macbeth murders and deceives, he loses his sanity. Evil corrupts everything it touches, and Macbeth decides to be evil's servant.
“The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde” by Robert Louis Stevenson and “Macbeth” by Shakespeare are novels that involve the theme of duality through good and evil aspects. Duality refers to having two parts, often with opposite meanings, like the duality of good and evil. In both the novels, the theme of duality is portrayed through setting, sleep, human nature and appearance. This literary technique is used to show the extremes of good and evil, and by using these elements, authors are able to cover an entire spectrum of good and evil through the several themes.
