Two forms of structural inequalities that has a definite influence in the way people live and how they live are: education and employment! I am a firm believer that education can lead to equality for everyone on Earth, with education we have the possible power to create a world where no one is poor and struggling with the burdens the poor or even the lower class hold. Not all education, however, is accessible for one as it is for another, which is the obvious problem. Since not all of us are capable or can afford a college/university level education, we are forced to be fit into a class and are categorized based on how much information we know/what we don’t. Even when people get into college they are less advantaged than some of the rest, college classes cost a fortune for many in state students, but …show more content…
Even then, people are still faced with racial issues or even gender differences. Going to a college as a minority can be seen as intimidating at first because one thinks that they don’t belong and that can effect the way they retain information and can have a negative effect on their studying because of their constant reminders that they wouldn’t be as good as the majority race. Being female can also be tough in a competitive college because people usually attribute smarter and more efficient people with being male, which is a completely wrong state of mind. I cant even count the times I’ve witnessed a female outdo a male on a debate of examination. But just the way people view females, as the inferior gender, even in 2016, is just crazy. In an engineering class or college, females may feel like they too aren’t good enough because the amount of males in the class, this can psych a female out and lead her to do worse on an exam because a male doesn’t have to worry about this type of
A cause of income inequality could be the jobs that people have. “In the United States, income inequality, or the gap between the rich and everyone else, has been growing markedly… (Income Inequality, para 1).” There have been no signs of income inequality changing for the lower classes, or getting better, therefore, it has become a very concerned issue upon Americans. “America’s top ten percent now average at least nine times as much income as the bottom 90 percent (Income Inequality, para 2).” Many people who have a big dream have jobs that pay minimum wage, which makes it hard. With the rich getting richer, it makes it hard for the lower classes to get a shot at being at the top with them. This also makes it hard to close the gap between the three classes.
The last issue concerning wealth inequality is the health and well being of the lower class. The high rates of social problems: lower rates of performance in school, life expectancy, incarceration, teenage pregnancy along with health problems like obesity and heart disease are directly effected by the United States high inequality. The reason for poor school performance is that children of the lower class typically do not plan on going to college because they cannot afford it. If they do not plan on going to college, they don’t believe there is a reason to put a lot of effort and succeed in high school.
In chapter one of Savage Inequalities, by Jonathan Kozol, he speaks of the disastrous state of East St. Louis. He describes in horrific detail, the condition that many school children from grades K-12 are forced to learn in. East St. Louis is one of the worst ghettos in Illinois, and Kozol goes into great detail about the multitude of problems facing the city and more importantly, the school children living there. The economy is too weak to pay for any type of necessity for the schools. Therefore, the school system is compromised. There is absolutely no money for proper
I agree with Aristotle when he says, “The worst form of inequality is to try to make unequal things equal.” To make everything equal, it wouldn’t require putting down people who strive for greatness and praise for average-minded people. It is unfair to compare someone who has worked hard all their life to become who they are today and someone indolent as equal. When certain individuals impede one’s ability by uplifting the others, they are actually creating more inequality than what exists. To illustrate, in the short film, 2081, the United States handicapper General requires certain people to wear handicaps to make everyone on the same rank. This is not fair to everyone because people who are stronger or smarter have to be made equal to everyone
Economic class has been one of the reasons behind inequality and discrimination in our society. Inequality is one of the main issues in America, in which people are not provided with equal opportunities. Income inequality is increasing rapidly between people, as the economic progress for lower and middle class is not improving. As a result of income inequality, social inequality is increasing within a society. The difference in payment levels does not only affect the family status, but it also reduces their chances of affording health insurance and providing better education for their children.
society, the idea of income inequality is a frequent topic of argument. Many believe that a large income inequality distribution has a negative effect on a society, while others feel that it has very minor, nonexistent, or even positive effect. Some of the factors that affect the income inequality in the United States are low minimum wages, education, and discrimination of race and gender. The swelling income inequality gap in the United States has created numerous social, health, and human capital problems. There is a ton of information to digest regarding who the majority of money is split between and who is actually benefitting from it. There are numerous factors that affect the income inequality and the data associated with the results of it are rather
Social inequality can practically be made apparent at any moment of someone’s life – whether at work or school amongst peers or simply watching the news in the morning. According to Dalton Conley, social inequality is narrowly defined as “a condition in which a difference in wealth, power, prestige, or status based on nonnatural conventions exist” (2017 p.241). Moreover, social inequality is a process whereby society can determine how a class of people is expected to coexist within predetermined social, political, and economic boundaries. The affected class will live within the predefined constraints, and the affected class will then pass the predefined constraints on to future generations. It is imperative to understand that social inequality is a result of social stratification, which according to
Social inequality is something our ancestors had to deal with and something our children will have to deal with. This is an ongoing issue addressed by many but solved by none. Social inequality is inevitable in this capitalistic society. This idea of social inequality promotes the idea of capitalism which then promotes the American Dream. The American Dream has become harder to reach than ever before. Since the middle class is shrinking, the lower class finds it near to impossible to work their way up the ladder. Due to new fortunes in industry, the lower class has a cap set over them that they cannot quite break from. Big businesses and the one percent has stomped on the American Dream. To reduce this flaw in social inequality, the restrictions
The inequalities of this country are evident, and now the question is how they can be addressed and attended. The means to which this answer can be procured is from looking at
Some inequalities which still remain to day is the wage gap between men and women, the education gap between students, and the opportunities offered for minorities. I believe a wage gap between men and women still remain because of the CEO positions put in place. Including the ignorance of people who hire the employees. The society also puts in place the belief of men to be inferior to women. I also think the education gap between students also exists because the low funding for students who go to schools in poor areas. This also gives the students less opportunities. The society also affects how minorities gain opportunities. The majority of minorities live in poor areas, which this also going hand and hand with the difficulties of education
Inequalities exist an all aspects of life. The nature and result of such inequalities shapes our social as well as economic lives. As people progress through their educational life certain inequalities will result in different outcomes of schooling for different sets of people. “In post war Britain pupils from a working class background are constantly found to gain fewer academic qualifications, to be under represented in institutions of higher education and to end up in jobs offering little opportunity for social advancement'; (Brown 1987 p11). It is inequalities such as these that are present both in and out of school that will determine life chances of individuals. It is commonly accepted that education is the main
In briefly evaluating the classical and modern explanations of social inequality, it is essential that we step outside the realm of our own lives, class position, and discard any assumptions we might have about the nature of inequality. This process of critical pedagogy allows us to view our world, not from our perspective, but from a wider, more critical analysis of inequality's nature. Also, it should be considered within this wider perspective that all theories of inequality have a class perspective, where the theorist, based on the position their theory takes, is making claims from (or for) a particular class (whether they want to or not). With this in mind, it seems that most of these theories come
Inequality is perhaps the mother of all social issues. The distribution of wealth and other things is widely debated and covered in media, and many seek the find a ‘just’ way approaching the issue. Questions that are commonly considered are: How should society be structured to deal with inequality? Is some amount of inequality justifiable, and to what extent should it be allowed? John Rawls and Robert Nozick are two political philosophers who address this topic in very different ways. Throughout this paper, I will explain and analyze the arguments of Rawls and Nozick, and I will also argue against Nozick’s conception of a just society.
To be treated as lesser or unworthy is a terrible thing. What happened to ‘all men are created equal’? I guess that only applies if you are a straight, white man. A minority is a part of a population differing from others in some characteristics and are often subjected to different treatment. That said, minorities were mistreated and shoved to the back of history. In Aria by Richard Rodriguez the Rodriguez family feel what it means to be a minority in their everyday life. They’re held at arm's length by the people around them, and struggle to assimilate. In Rise of the Rocket Girls by Nathalia Holt it's not race that sets these women behind. It is simply the fact that they are women. In both novels society is presenting more challenges to a certain group, but that does not stop them. Even today minorities are still at a disadvantage. That does not stop people from pursuing their goals and dreams. As a student perseverance is needed because you cannot give up easily or you just will not make it.
Society holds many structures that mould human performance and produce opportunities for some, but inequalities for others (Morrall, 2009). These structures in society are organized by the hierarchies of class, ethnicity and gender (Crossman, 2016). Due to having a society based on hierarchies, social inequalities are inevitable. Social inequality refers to the ways in which a group or individual of a certain social position may receive unequal opportunities or distribution of ‘goods’ such as education, income, living conditions and healthcare (Walker, 2009). These unequal opportunities may be given to someone because of their ethnicity, gender, income, religion or social class (Walker, 2009). For example, people in a high social class will be able to pay for their children to go to a good private school for a good education, whereas lower-class or working class people will struggle to afford the same education.
