In this case study, strengths based perspective and social work value would be used to minimise unprofessional judgements. Instead of focusing on clients' problems and deficits, the strengths based perspective offers social workers to recognise people as having strengths and have the capacity to continue to learn, grow and change (Hammond, 2010). It is important to understand the strengths-based approach is not about denying that people do experience problems and challenges. Rather, the purpose of this model is to help clients identify their strength and empower them. When working with youths, social workers tend to make the mistake of focusing on the youth’s problem behaviours. While they are effective for recognising the youths’ problems, they provide a little insight to the strengths youths may have in overcoming some of their problem behaviours (The University of California, 2009). On the contrary, strength-based perspective equip social workers with a positive way to engage the youth and their families. I believe that by using this helper perspective, this it would help to minimise bias judgment. This is because individual biases can affect my judgment when interacting with her and be over focus on my client’s problems. As a social worker, I convey respect to her when I truly listen what she plans to accomplish through her behaviours, the successes and obstacles she encounters and the strengths that she possesses. This can be challenging and a social worker is expected to seek the advice of their supervisor or even participate in their own psychotherapy to help them deal with any personal issues that may arise (Miller, n.d.). A social worker also needs to understand the inherent value of every human life, regardless of background or beliefs. They need to respect the differences between their personal beliefs and those of their clients, considering ethnic and cultural diversity.
