1. The lecture “Community Research in the San Joaquin Valley” was presented by Steve Roussos.
2. The purpose of Roussos’s presentation was to show students how they can conduct research in order to help the community of Merced. Through the lecture, students were also able to better understand Merced’s (and California’s) issues and how they intertwine. Additionally, the lecture also endorsed a fairly new minor in UC Merced.
3. The city of Merced has several issues such as having a high unemployment rate of 12.6%, compared to California’s unemployment rate of 5.7%. Merced’s children living in food insecure households is 33.3% while California has a 26.3% and Merced’s child poverty rate is 38.1% while California’s rate is 22.7%. Clearly, Merced has issues but there are more. Furthermore, these issues could lead to one another. For instance, if a student goes to school hungry because they don’t have enough food to eat, the student’s main focus will be food and when will they have the opportunity to eat again, if they will. The

1st Q: How has the minor helped the community of Merced so far?
2nd Q: How are other UC’s helping their communities? How can we learn from them?
3rd Q: What will happen if Merced doesn’t make a difference? What will the community do?
5. Roussos’s lecture and the readings by Mathews and Karner are related since they all take about serious issues in California, especially in the San Joaquin Valley. For instance, Mathews talks about six San Joaquin policy fight which are: the high speed railing problem, the water problem, crime, fracking, immigration problems and the unemployment problem. Mathews also states that by solving the problems in the San Joaquin Valley, we will be able to face the problems affecting California as a whole. Moreover, Karner continuously states that issues in the San Joaquin Valley should be address sooner than later since things could get even worse later on—we can’t just assume things will get
A new university campus could have a tremendous impact for not only the City of Chula Vista, but also the larger CaliBaja Megaregion, comprised of San Diego and Imperial Counties to the north of the border and the five municipalities that make up Baja California, MX
“The agriculture Department estimated in 1999 that twelve million children were hungry or at risk of going hungry.” She proclaimed. The cause of that could be because parents who can’t afford or find service programs to park their vacationing children in front of the television, lock the door, and go to work hoping for
There has been four major law change that affect the way that california is the way today. The first of the four changes is term limits, they change this rule so that there would be no more career politician , but that not the case. In the old rule term limits rules you were allowed to be in the senate for 6 terms and in the assembly for 3 term. Now the term limits you get 12 terms not matter where you are. This new system bring in a lot of advantage, and little disadvantage but there is always false in every system. The advantage to is that it helps to bring in new idea and people that can see thing different. But there also a disadvantage to this by bring in new blood ,we are taking about the season professional that know what they are
California is a unique state that is the most populated. Sometimes state and national leaders differ over California's management. Maddees become worse when determining financial responsibility for costly issues.
The first chapter of the book is an introduction to the economy, politics and people of California. It encompasses the economy, politics and demography of the state for the past, present and the future. The edition features updated demographic information of the state from the census that took place in 2010. The chapter explains the state’s transition from colonization to rebellion and statehood. It discusses California’s past, including the great depression, political turmoil, infrastructure, workingmen’s party and World War II. The growth, reform and progressive change of the state to what it is today is also highlighted in the book. California previously faced budget deficits
Once a small university in a small town, we are now the premier research and educational institution in the thriving Inland Southern California region. Explore our history through the links below.
In 2008 California was faced with a huge budget crisis and governing crisis as the state governing was not nearly as efficient enough to respond to changes and problems that were happening in the state. This was due to a lot of poor laws that related to taxation and to the way our state government worked. There is also unique differences with California than other states, like our direct democracy system, and many of our laws are compromises that don’t work well between liberal and conservative ideologies. Our politicians are also not well motivated to serve the people and would rather server their own special interests that benefit their own career. While there are still a lot of problems that California needs to deal with, we did make adjustments
The bigger an issue, the more likely it is to be ignored because then people are able to blame the size of the issue. In 2015, a study found that over 500,000 people were homeless in the United States. At this point, major cities were beginning to declare homelessness an emergency situation, yet majorly successful solutions remained few and far between. In Kozol’s book. he writes about how common it is for the government to look the other way or to choose the option based on what will cost the government the least or what is more beneficial for the government, rather than what is best for the schools. “... the districts that face the toughest challenges are also likely to be those that have the fewest funds to meet their children’s needs” (Source G, 56). It is important to recognize that the book is written based off of Kozol’s experiences in the late twentieth century, meaning that the specifics of the situations may differ in present day but the basic themes and issues remain. In Source B, Lloyd Pendleton discusses how the Housing First system helped to decrease chronic homelessness in Utah by 91%. In Source E, Richard J. Berry, the mayor of Albuquerque, New Mexico, describes how he helped create
The lack of representation has resulted in the “cut off from the seats of power by geography, alienated by the state’s left-leaning politics and tendency toward regulation, enduring stubbornly high unemployment, facing the decimation of traditional industries such as logging, and harboring few prospects for economic growth”, says Goodyear. All these problems could be resolved by one simple, but very complex solution; separating California into two different states: The State of California and The State of Jefferson. Separating California into two or more states would be the most effective option in lowering taxes
It has become much more common in the United States to turn on the news and learn about yet another shooting. Typically, the violence involves the criminal acquiring a firearm that they should not have been permitted to have, and attacking someone defenseless- either because they could not access their weapon in time, or for another reason. The increased frequencies of such tragic events have made many Americans wonder how much tighter gun restrictions to be to prevent them from continuing. They also wonder how tight gun restrictions can be before they become unconstitutional, or even if the 2nd Amendment should continue to exist. The Amendment states that “A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, and the right of people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.”
One of the leading danger to the average citizen of California is the increase of crime rate. In modern days some citizens are even scared to carry out there lives due to rising gang activity. Recent studies show that 1 in 4 residents of California will at one point be a victim of violent crime such as murder, forced rape, robbery, aggravated assault, or burglary. The government would be doing an injustice to it’s own people by taking away their protection. Another
The most consideration that matters to every working American is how this crisis will affect the cost of living. After that how much work forces have to cut off estimating that 17,000 from worker jobs are going to be lost. Since this is the third driest year that it's been a pretty bad drought for California. A lot of waterfalls as rain or snow up in the north in the eastern mountains are cutting off because the climate changes. This crisis and lack of jobs cause many problems in the community, drug use crime and poverty increased as a result of this water crisis. The governor Brown imposed a mandatory water boundary that requires all California's cities and towns to decline their usage of water by 25%. They had been wasting water until the beginning of April when the governor gave a mandatory order to reduce the use of water. Also, he asks farmers to have water management plans. The governor asks people to prevent wasting water and encourage them to conserve the water from waste. Over the past year the State Water Resources Control Board build an unprecedented measures to prohibit wasteful water. The orders require limit the irrigation of the outdoor plants to be twice a week, and that include restaurant and
The author of this work identifies himself as John in Revelation 1:1 as servant John, who “bore witness to the word of God and to the testimony of Jesus Christ.” John plainly gives his purpose to deliver the prophecy of the end of time as “time is near (Revelation 1:3).”
Demographics: Christiana’s social community consists of males who enjoy sporting activities like playing football; every Saturday they play “old vs. young football” on the school grounds. The females enjoy cooking and talking with each other. Even in the recent warning of the devastating hurricane Matthew, they cooked food for everyone including neighbours. The area that stood out the most is that they are all well-educated even up to the university level. They inspire each other to be at their best at all times. Although some close friends and families live in other countries, a strong bond still exists. The children from this group have developed a sub-group where they have fun playing games, and they also help each other with homework. Economic
