Stereotypes In Wreck It Ralph

After watching the movie Crash in class it was immediately added to the list of my favorite movies. I have always been a huge fan of mystery movies. When I say mysteries I don’t always mean murders or crime but those that don’t quite make complete sense until the end. Crash is that type of movie.

“I’m saying to be a hero means you step across the line and you are willing to make a sacrifice, so heroes always are making a sacrifice. Heroes always take risks. Heroes are always deviant. Heroes always do something that most people don’t and we want to change” - Philip Zimbardo. In the movie Wreck-It Ralph, Ralph who is the main character in the story, is the bad guy in the game. He obtains the badge in “Hero's Duty” then gets blasted off to “Sugar Rush”, accidentally bringing along a Cy-bug. The Cy-bug is gone for now and Ralph loses his medal. Ralph is the main protagonist in the story and he is the leader of the children on the island. Since Ralph was voted leader, he has the characteristics of leadership and he brings civilization and order to the story. Unlike the other boys, Jack and Simon, Ralph’s main focus is to get off the island instead of having fun. For example, Ralph tried constructing huts with Simon; meanwhile, the boys are playing and running off having fun. In the beginning of the story, Ralph’s power with the children was secure; however, towards the end, that power is being transferred to Jack. Ralph represents the

Despite the fact that Jack’s fear of not being chief ends badly, Ralph’s fear of not surviving has another whole level of bad endings. Ralph’s main concern when the boys crash into the island is being rescued, but because of this, he neglects other problems such as looking out for littluns. “’That litte’un – ‘gasped Piggy – ‘him with the mark of his face, I don’t see him. Where is he now?’” (Golding 46). Ralph is so blinded by the idea of being rescued that he forgets his priorities. He should be watching the littluns, but instead, he is being selfish and cares only about the fire. As a consequence to his poor action, an innocent life is taken away. Also when a ship comes by and Ralph realizes that the hunters let the fire out, he loses it and he yells at Jack, but “his voice was loud and savage, and struck them into silence. ‘There was a ship’” (Golding 74). Ralph teaches us a lesson that Jack cannot. Keeping a democracy in civilization is crucial for survival. He also teaches that children need guidance and discipline. Ralph makes it clear that without the establishment of rules many problems would be caused, as shown in the novel when all the boys act out. A similarity between Jack and Ralph is that their rivalry caused society and civilization to be torn, without that the community will not function properly. Another point to compare and contrast between Jack and Ralph is their relationships between each other, and the other boys as well. From the get go Jack is by far more confident in himself and his ability to talk to others. He knows what he wants and he is not afraid to get it, even if that means being rude to others along the way. Unlike Ralph who immediately comes off as timid and uninterested when he first starts talking to Piggy and a few other boys. A similarity between Jack and Ralph is that they create a small liking to each other in the beggining, caused by agreement in sharing different roles in leadership, shown in this quote, “Jack and Ralph smiled at each other with shy liking. Ralph made sure all the older kids on the island had a key job role to ensure safety and survival by setting things straight. Ralph orders the hunters to keep the fire going because it produced smoke which could signal the ships nearby securing their rescue. Ralph spotted ships and knew there shouldn’t be any fooling around because it is up to them if the fire stays lit or not. He, himself, was focused on providing everyone with shelter and was determined to do it by himself if he had to, whether the hunters did their job or not. Unlike Ralph, who is doing his job, the Jack’s choir ignores the fire and goes out hunting. When the fire goes out, the hunters aren’t really upset with the fire going out while Ralph saw that the situation could’ve been their rescue saying, “There was a ship. Out there. You said you’d keep the fire going and you let it out” (70)! If he had the same attitude as the other boys nothing would likely get done and he would remain the same as before and not care about the aftermath, but he continues to act mature and not this incident stop him from trying to seek rescue. This shows his change because of how he sees the priority of being rescued and keeping the fire lit expressing his maturity and showing his understanding of life not just about having fun like most adults

Ralph is not only a leader, but a voice of reason within the group. Ralph’s main priority throughout the novel is to be rescued, even when it did not seem as important to the other boys in the group. Ralph creates a signal fire and consistently reminds the boys that it is imperative to their survival. Ralph explains, “Don’t you understand? Can’t you see we ought to--ought to die before we let the fire out?” (Golding 81). Ralph’s scolding to the hunters is well deserved considering that they wasted a possible opportunity to be rescued after letting the signal fire go out. As time went on, Jack and his hunters become more and more consumed with hunting and order began to turn into chaos. The hunters chant, “Kill the pig. Cut her throat. Bash her in” (Golding 75). Ralph refuses to join the boys and viciously murder pigs. The boys’ hygiene habits were also worsening, to the point that the boys were defecating in the wrong areas. Ralph tries to address it at a meeting, but the boys’ find their animal-like behavior amusing. Throughout the loss of civility and order, Ralph always keeps a persistent effort to keep the signal fire going and keep order within the group. Ralph’s attitude towards the entire situation drops, however he never completely lost hope.

Jack is the perfect representation of a Tyrant, who uses his power to control his teammates, which always causes a Fray between Ralph and himself. Ralph’s character is the perfect image the boys need to follow since he unlike the others, avoids playtime to

Ralph is regarded as a democratic and charismatic leader. He would base any decision on majority votes and he is all about getting a job done effectively and efficiently. For example, he would crack his head to build shelter and figure out ways to get themselves for being rescued. Eventually, majority of the group members become undisciplined and disobey Ralph’s commands and leave to join jack’s group. Consequently, Ralph, piggy and the twins are left on their own to be hunted by Jack’s tribe. Ralph is also a sensible leader; he only keens on being rescued rather than spending unnecessary time to go for hunting. Ralph is a bad guy, but that doesn’t necessarily mean he’s a bad guy. Ralph is courageous and decides that he needs to leave his ordinary world to find validation somewhere else, however, he gets a bit delayed along the way. When he enters Hero’s Duty, a game dedicated to the killing of “cybugs”, he earns a medal after almost dying due to the creatures and their eggs. Ralph walks right into a video game meant to simulate war against aliens. What could be more courageously reckless? This trial is supposed to show Ralph’s true strength and talent, and also symbolize Ralph’s fear of dying outside of his game and his realization that he isn’t the worst bad guy ever, as the penthouse people in his game treated him. Ralph was so afraid, he could hear his teeth rattling, and he was unable to move. Ralph proceeds to find his himself and to pull himself together. Ralph is demonstrating real courage at such a young age. Though, he turned his emotions into hatred, which could lead to destructive actions, possibly hurting yourself, or others, in the process

Secondly, Ralph is not only a rational leader but also a moral person, who cleverly keeps the fairness in his group. “Ralph, looking more understanding at Piggy, saw that he was hurt and crushed. He hovered between the two courses of apology or further insult ‘Better Piggy than Fatty” (25). Ralph is sincere and considerate for other people. He apparently understand their feeling and particularly shows his sympathy for Piggy. Ralph is sensible enough to realize that everyone deserves to be respected. He believes no one should have to put up with being tormented. Ralph gently gains others’ support by treating them equally, showing his compassion and ability to empathize with them. Opposite to Ralph, Jack is immoral, violent and condescending. “He’s going to beat Wilfred” (159). He does not care or understand the natural equality of

All throughout the story Ralph shows us heroic qualities like: blowing the conch and having all the boys run to him. It shows that the boys look up to him as their hero to get them off the island. Even at at the end when all the boys chased him down trying to kill them. He still lead them all right to the naval officer. Showing us that he is the true hero of the story. At least Ralph stayed moral that meant he could live with himself without the weight of a person's death on his

Ralph cares about everyone, not just some people or himself. Ralph was scared to go first on the ledge when the boy’s were searching for the beast. Jack was a hunter and he was scared to go on the ledge and Ralph knew, so Ralph decided to take over “I’m chief. I’ll go. Don’t argue” (p.155). Ralph knew that Jack was just as scared as he was, but he soon didn’t care what he himself was feeling. He knew that he could’ve made Jack go first, but he wanted to take the pressure off of him. When Jack and Roger captured Samneric, right after attempting to kill Ralph, Ralph still went back for them even if he was “Terrified that they would run and give the alarm (p.230).” Ralph wanted to make sure they were okay. Ralph was scared to go back for them, but he didn’t care. He just wanted to make sure they were alright even if it meant it might get him killed. Ralph symbolizes true civilization because he’s the only one who stayed civil, and he’s the only one left who wanted to actually get rescued and still had hope for

He saw what humans were capable of and watched as his friends began to revert to their savage nature. He weeps for the “loss of innocence, the darkness of a man’s heart, and the fall through the air of the once wise, true friend called Piggy.” It is at this point that Ralph matures, as when he cries, he cries for everyone and everything. He realizes that life isn’t so simple and that it, along with other humans, are complex and unpredictable.
