From birth through death, people are given a label that they do not want but are forced to accept it. Stereotypes happen everywhere, whether they are in the past or the present, some of them change, some do not. Stereotypes are passed on from one generation to another and from one’s own judgment also. There are people who are trying to change the stereotypes by telling their stories and past experiences. The contents inform the audience about the stereotypes and how it is different for each person.
There are many written stories and videos that describe these stereotypes by showing many different experiences with stereotypes and how the authors feel about them. One written essay that I chose is “Turning Against Myself” by Amy Lee because …show more content…

In her essay, Lee talked about the stereotypes that Chinese students faced and she herself thought that they were “…geeks who followed the stereotype that most Westerners have of Chinese kids: exceptionally bright in math and sciences, greasy hair and thick glasses, and of course, always spoke with that strange Chinese accent” (Lee 49). Her essay informs the audience about how she shielded away from the Chinese culture and embraced the Western culture, which gave her the reputation of “being “white-washed” and a “banana” – yellow on the outside but all white on the inside” (Lee 49). Although things did not turn out the way Lee wanted, she “would like to be able to go back and reclaim what used to be mine – my culture” (Lee 51). Lee would like to go back to the past and change how she was back then and embrace her culture more. One way that the written essay, Amy Lee’s “Tuning Against Myself”, can be enhance is if it was spoken because the audience can hear the emotions and the tone of Lee’s voice when she retells the essay. It would help the audience understand more about Lee and her life and why she rejects her culture. The audience can also meet with Lee to talk about her past experiences and ask her to explain why she rejected her culture. One way that the video, “Confounding Stereotypes” by Indigo Williams, can be enhance is if there are written words so the viewers can follow along with the video because some people process information
