Sewing is a creative outlet and a wonderful skill set to enhance the quality of life. My son shows interest in so many activities and at home we seek to encourage his growth in all his hobbies. With Papaw he works on carpentry, with daddy he enjoys mechanics, individually he focuses on science and imaginative play, as well as gaming. With his aunt he enjoys painting, cooking and reading. Together my son and I enjoy activities like crafting and baking, our most recent exploration is sewing. For every avenue of interest we are fortunate to have individuals to encourage his development.
In relation to my sons new expression of interest in sewing we began a small hand-stitched activity. I purchased some embroidery thread and blunt tipped needles and felt to create patchwork monsters. After work I made a quick run to the local Hobby Lobby to

I did not take an initial stand for this argument at the time mainly because I do not frequent box stores. The idea that toys are separated by brand I can understand. Adding colored backgrounds or signs over top specifying gender is a little over the top, but classifying a productive skill sets as a gendered toy is outrageous. Little boys and little girls should be encouraged by manufacturers to develop any skill that will enhance their ability to live. If a little boy wants to play with an easy bake oven one should be provided without a stigmatism attached. I am not a very good cook though I am a girl yet I enjoy building, two traditional gendered hobbies broken. With that said why would my son not want to learn more about cooking? I do not necessarily take a stand on one side of gender nor the other both genders are a necessity in society, I just want others to feel positive about their own likes and
In the article “The Most Outrageous Ways School Are Trying To Enforce Gender Stereotypes” explains several cases where schools enforce boy and girls how to behave. The editor Tara Culp-Ressler explains that a senior girl went to prom dressed in jeans and got kicked out because she was not wearing a dress. Another case was a fourteen-year-old boy was forced to get rid of his makeup, which made his mother outraged and complained to the school. Tara also demonstrates that an eight-year-old girl was kicked out of a Christian school because she was not acting to feminine. She was dressing in sneakers and with short hair and the people in that school did not appreciate the girl being less feminine. Even more Tara writes of another incident where
Your television and computer are controlling every choice you make. Scary thought? Everyday Americans log into their computer or turn on their TV and are fed information from our trusted media. In fact, a Marshall survey states, “By 2015, it is estimated that Americans will consume both traditional and digital media for over 1.7 trillion hours, an average of approximately 5 and a half hours per person per day.” Unknowingly at times, we are allowing our media to shape the choices we make, the ways we see others, and the way we view ourselves. With most of Americans unaware of the media's control on their choices and views, this can be an alarming realization. Media has a major impact on multiple parts of our society.
The film does have a very important and very controversial content. The film was violent and showed things as I truly believe the way things were. Yes, it was hard to watch at times, but it was the truth. The film is a really good example on what happens when people live life with hatred in their hearts. A good thing that Derek’s younger brother Danny learned that he wrote on his paper is “hate is baggage, life is too short to be p*ssed off all the time, it’s just not worth it” and I agree with him.
To start off, I found your journal entry very interesting. Additionally, I liked how you decided to do your response in a different approach than the way many others or I did. Rather than just explaining what we think when we meet someone with a different speech pattern, you decided to describe your experience of being the victim of being the one who was judged and bullied. Your story was very touching, and I am glad you are now proud of your accent and the way you speak.
Baby dolls, toy cleaning supplies and toy kitchens are usually targeted to young girls. Presented in the Wall Street Journal by Jolie Solomon, it is widely known that there is a division between kids’ gender identities and
A barrage of advertisements, photographs, videos, graphs, and graphic compositions meet our eyes every day. Some of these attempt to coax us to buy what is presented through them, while others are just presented to please us. Although, each of these images are presented for different reasons, they all have visual arguments they are trying to make. Most images have a composition that is specifically planned or captured to convey a specific message. Being in a class that teaches how to use images in a manner that conveys a message, and has emphasis on the composition of such images, I found some of the information very familiar. However, information that was new to me, was applying critical thinking to an image. Evaluating claims, breaking down
Should toys stores separate toys by gender? All toys should not be marketed as a boy or girl toy. In the article Are gender toys harming childhood development it says, “All toys are neutral genders. What is not is not neutral is the way toys are marketed.” When they say this it means that that all toys can be played with a boy or a girl but the way stores market the toys they usually say Boys or Girls. According to the passage called Are gender toys harming childhood it say,”If you take a truck and show a girl playing with the truck, that girl would most likely play with it and see it as a girl’s toy” This means that some toys are not only for boys but that if you someone other than yourself playing with a toy you would probably go with the
Quilting is an artform that has been passed down through generations. The origins of quilting is still unknown to the public but it is known that it has been around for centuries. The art has traveled through sad and happy times in our world 's history, and it will continue to do that in the future. Quilting is defined as the joining together of layers of fabrics with lines stitching to form a bed cover, warm garment, or for decorative effect. Quilting has been pegged as being an older person 's activity or boring, but that simply is not true. More and more American children are being enrolled into sewing and quilting classes each year. We have all questioned an idea or belief at least once in our lifetime. If everyone believed what they were told, we would all think Santa is real, swallowing the seed of a watermelon will make one grow in our stomachs, and the tooth fairy was the one to put money under our pillows, not mom and dad. It is our questioning that truly makes us human. Of course, many beliefs that are questioned are not those childhood topics such as old St. Nick or intestinal gardens. The biggest idea I have ever questioned is where I stand politically. Being born into the household I was, and developing the friend group I have, made me think I was just like the rest of them. As I have gotten older, I have learned we are allowed to question those around us, and develop our own ideas and opinions.
toys should not be separated because it's not fair for the children in Redding,CA. Target was putting signs directing girls to buy a certain toy and boys to by a certain toy Children should have the right to play with whatever they want because it is a free country. So if there say that boys should buy footballs and girls should play with ponys that sexsist to the children because they can play with what they want. Other companies are making lots of stereotypes so they can make more money. According to the passage it states that there makeing more than one market so the will get twice the money. Would you want to be forced to play with a toy that you didn’t want to play
In my “career” in fashion, I've had the pleasure of being able to intern in both a fashion gallery and an art studio. I've also had the opportunity to take sewing and art classes outside and inside of school. I’ve tried to surround myself with all things fashion, including my room; my parents constantly get on to me to do something with my assortment of fashion magazines. In filling myself with everything fashion, I've started to want more from myself and my designs. I can sew and draw, even needlepoint; but I want to be able to do more. I want to be able to mix all of these elements together, including embroidering and knitting. I also want to be able to push myself to my max by establishing skills that I can add to my pieces that set me apart
Did you know that you could sew a quilt together with just scraps, remnants, and rags? Well, some quilters “often working together, combine these irregular bits of pieces of cloth into a new pattern.” In rural America there is often a traditional quilting bee which gave friends and neighbors a chance to get together and exchange gossip and news.
In my household growing up, I was always told that girls should play with girl toys, and boys should play with boy toys. I do not remember challenging this gender ideology, I just complied and played with my dolls and ponies. In today’s society, I believe we have begun start the process of moving away from these gender cultural norms, but we still have quite a ways to go. For example, Target has now taken away the signs that state girl and boy toy isles. However, I feel like I have seen an influx of “boy” toys being made pink so that girls can play with them. My daughter loves to play and make Lego creations. If she were only to play with the “girl” Lego sets that are pink and marketed towards girls, her selection would be very limited.
Aside from arising from mental shortcuts, it has also been proposed that stereotypes are a result of group conflict (Sherif, 1966). Regularly, individuals behave in a way that is expected of them in order to uphold the impressions others have of them. Thus, individuals act accordingly and embody the stereotype which is projected upon them (Baumeister & Bushman). The degree to which we rely on stereotypes when establishing judgements of others has been widely investigated in the field of social psychology. Frequently, the harmful consequences of relying on stereotypes is noted with the potential of this tendency to lead to prejudice and discrimination. Furthermore, the variation in the significance of stereotypes has been explored to determine
Sewing is an art that I have yet to master. As a Fashion Merchandising major, it is better to be safe than sorry. Meaning, the more crafting skills you possess, the better. Missing out on career opportunities due to lack of skills is not acceptable for me. I aim to gain vast amounts of knowledge of the creation process of fashion through this project. When people first started to wear clothing, about 60,000 years ago, they did not sew at all. They wrapped themselves in leather and furs to cover up. When people first began living in Central Asia, where the temperatures usually were lower, people wanted stronger clothing. “They began to use sharp pointed sticks or stone tools called awls (pronounced OLLS) to poke holes in their clothes so they could run the cords through the clothes instead of just around them. They used the awls to poke the end of the cord through the holes, too. Both Neanderthals and modern people used awls this way” (K.E. CARR). In the 20th century, sewing machines became more affordable to the working class. Therefore, the demand for sewing patterns increased. Textile industries in Western countries have declined as textile industries compete for cheaper labor in other parts of the globe. According to the U.S. Department of Labor “employment of sewers and tailors is expected to experience little or no change, growing 1 perfect from 2010 to 2020”. Textile workers who apply tasks with sewing machines, or make projects by hand, are still a vital component of
