Stereotypes Affecting Youth

Teen Spirit isn't just another movie about popularity and societal norms that we have in America. There is never a black and white moment in this fantastic movie. With so many deep subliminal meanings, you have to rewatch to truly understand. Throughout the story, the characters change dramatically, and we see different sides of everbodies personality.

In today’s modern world, our mindset in fashion are all based on fantasy; new brands/branding, trends and many more. We all live in a society whereby we tends to buy things that are attractive. Even though we don’t have enough money for such items such as cloths, borrowing or lending money from others would better off the cost. In fashion, a question came to mind, what type of people are mostly portrayed especially in magazine covers?

In many ways, television has portrayed a great deal of stereotypical behavior, and is distorted because it does not seem to represent the diversity or culture of certain ethnic groups, for example, Black, Hispanic, Arab, and Muslim communities etc. In my outlook, I feel that the objective of most of these television shows/media is to target certain subcultures for the reason of it being understood as amusing or entertaining, but in turn it evokes other raciest humor. At time, I do find it extremely difficult to watch television, not only is it down grading it clearly shows a misunderstanding of those communities I mentioned, but in general the misperception of Black people over all. Imagine you were told by society that because you are a female, you are not able to perform as well as a male profile. How would this affect your mentality? Stereotypes like this one can negatively affect one's performance. Although many students at VCIS felt negatively stereotyped at some point. Most students hold a growth mindset and don’t let the negative stereotype affect their performance in school.

Racial stereotypes are often used in an informal society for youth. Youth use social media to make fun of others that are unlike themselves. Many people may develop lower self-confidence, and their ego may take a drop. These comments toward a race, or religion may demean someone when spoken. On the internet these are always ignored. While casually texting a friend, there might be an inappropriate comment regarding this.Youth sometimes have a habit of using these racist words against others as a sign of coolness, or to make fun of someone else’s misery. Usually, these comments are spoken because children cannot properly understand a complicated environment; full of differences and changes.

As a teacher educator, Harry Morgan was interested in examining the origins of stereotypes in childhood experiences, specifically White children’s behavior toward individuals with dark skin color. Therefore, he conducted a study that involved a group of 52 White children aged four-year old (22 females and 30 males) who was enrolled in a university-based child-care center. This study was conducted by interviews in a relaxed one-on-one conversational manner, which lasted approximately 30 to 45 minutes. The researcher found that White people are more likely to have positive characteristics compared to Black individuals. School has always treated both sexes the same; a different approach should be taken when teaching boys in class. Boys think and act differently when compared with girls, so why treat them the same? During High School the phase of puberty begins with most boys. This is when you see them turn into men. Everyone knows that they grow larger and more muscular, but many don’t understand what’s going on in the developing males mind. A rush of testosterone is produced in the body that changes the way they act; this rush of testosterone often brings along aggressive behavior with it. Teachers often discipline males into believing that their actions during this phase are improper; but I disagree.

Stereotyping. It exists, whether you want it to, or not. You can see it virtually anywhere. In public, in school, at home, even in other countries. However, it is very evident here in America, especially in school.

In the era of globalization, and with the advent of sophisticated technology any message or idea gets spread like wildfire. In today’s times influencing common public is easy which results in commoner suffering the brunt of what some of their own leader's decision about any issue. The discussion of whether common people getting affected by groups’ ideology is a matter of debatable one with each side has its logical argument. In this essay, I would weave supporting arguments in favor of the notion that commoners are bearing the brunt of group’s aspiration on any fundamental issue.

In order to determine whether or not stereotypes have an impact on a child’s development, we must look at the roots at which their ideas on gender develop. At the age of two, toddlers will begin to use stereotypes during play; girls are to play with “feminine” toys and boys “masculine” toys. This raises the question; where do children learn stereotypes? Stereotypes are mainly influenced by parents or guardians, who they themselves have ideas on what gender is, all taught by societal standards we seem to uphold. Many people have wondered what were the highs and lows of being a teen. It shouldn’t be a wonder since everybody was once a teen in their lifetime, but things have changed and I just so happen to know. Teens are constantly bashed and criticized about being lazy and "inconsiderate". Even though part of that is true, it doesn't relate to every teen. Let me explain.

Every child is unique. One can never script what a child is going to say next. We all have our own representation of what a child is. My image of a child is different from others in my generation, different then current teachers and as a society, individuals have a different view of children. My view of children comes from my experiences, views, beliefs. These same ideas are used by others throughout the world. Everyone sees a child from their point a view and that is where our images of children differ.

I completely agree with you that young children often to not realize that toys are targeted for one gender or the other. I know that I never thought anything of playing with cars until I was older and I noticed the stark differences in marketing. I think that we all realize this at different ages. Some of us have it instilled at a very young age, while others may not realize it until they are older. While I knew that I was not a boy, and that there were differences between us, I did not think about them when I was a young child. I think it is interesting how different parents handle this. Don’t let the society label you. Stereotype is signifying the opinions between members of a certain group about the other groups. Stereotype can be a result of own observation or it can be effected by others such as family, friends, teacher, and media. Role of negative stereotyping in the society. The first role is that how the person should act, it puts labels about how a person should act or live according to their gender, race, character, and other facts. In other meaning stereotype can control the person life. Second role of stereotype, Stereotypes have created a distortion of how every person should be.

What if I told you that wearing heels, makeup, and curling your hair meant that you were uneducated? Or due to not wearing makeup, dressing up signified your educational status was insufficient. I could also say that based off what I see when I look at someone, I can tell what type of person they are. This is our problem today, this is what judgment is and our world is based off of stereotypes we give. It is a harsh and cruel world we live in but it is the truth.
