The Patapsco Female Institute overlooks the Patapsco River Valley at the highest point of Ellicott City. A former girls’ boarding school, the institute is now a rebuilt historical site, which is located on Church Road in Ellicott City, Maryland. The institute offered an opportunity for young women to learn a revolutionary curriculum from 1837-1891, in a time where it was uncommon for girls to be educated. The school had a unique curriculum, teaching the young women botany, chemistry, languages, literature, math, and music in an effort to mold elegant young ladies into engaged, active citizens. The institute was deigned by architect Robert Cary Long, Sr., and built by Charles Timanus. The doors opened on January 1, 1837 as one of the first girls

I have always been interested in the healthcare field, but it was not until my senior year in high school that I found obstetrics and women’s health. Now for the past four years, I have committed myself to the field, searching and seizing all the possible opportunities to experience the discipline. My love of the field has grown deeper and deeper and I hope to continue to pursue a medical doctorate specializing in obstetrics and gynecology. In the future, I hope to open my own obstetrics and gynecological practice in my hometown of Ithaca, NY. Currently there is only one OB-GYN practice in all of Ithaca and thus women have limited choice in who their doctors are. The OB-GYN practice in Ithaca currently has a monopoly. Having
Maternity care in the United States is in jeopardy. There is an increasing trend of shortages of obstetrician-gynecologists and family physicians that once provided vital maternity care. With almost half of the nation’s counties lacking an obstetric provider, approximately ten million women are affected. Obstetricians-gynecologist themselves are also feeling the burdens of the understaffed hospitals and clinics with prolonged work hours. These medical professionals who dedicate their very lives to the field and the care of women are under a great amount of pressure and stress due to the shrinking workforce. Furthermore, interest amongst the youth is necessary in order to have an ample amounts of physicians available to replace the increasing

Lifelong sexual health for adolescents requires this vulnerable population have information about and access to affordable, youth-friendly, and culturally competent sexual healthcare services. In addition, the providers of these sexual healthcare services should be trained to respect privacy and support these teens in making individualized choices that are appropriate for them. As evidenced by the rate of STIs and unplanned pregnancy among marginalized youth populations, barriers such as stigma, discrimination, lack of knowledgeable providers, cost burden,
1. Menopause: (from Greek mēn month + pausis halt)- the period in a woman's life when menstruation begins to halt. The average age is 51 but it can occur between the ages of 45 and 55. The menopausal transformation lasts around 4 years.
Aside from being told they are too young to have the disease, many teenagers who think they may have endometriosis are said to be crazy, as Ballweg says in her book, “A disease that will be chalked up to psychosomatic problems by some because they lack awareness about endo… one can understand why endo is very challenging for those with it, particularly teenagers” (Ballweg 241). In an experiment, 4,000 women were interviewed, and 61% were originally told nothing was wrong, where 69% of these were gynecologists themselves. More funding and research will lead to more awareness, and problems such as these can be avoided in the future, if the necessary things are done for improvement today.
Growing up as a female, you learn about the point in time when you change from a girl to a woman in society. This can be seen as a blessing or a curse to many females as it always is to endure one’s menstrual cycle. The journey, for me, was untypical for a girl my age. While all my friends were talking about how they received their first period I was still waiting for mine to arrive. While everyone was having their biological change into womanhood I was left behind wondering when I will get my turn to grow as a woman. I went years waiting for my cycle to begin, but nothing ever did. When I entered my sophomore year of high school, I started developing pains. These pains would make sitting uncomfortable and intolerable to me especially during school so I decided to go to the doctors to see what was happening to me.
This writer met with the patient briefly as she was clearly upset about the cancellation of the Women's Group. This writer validated the patient's feeling as she expressed about looking forward being around other participants. This writer informed the patient that she cannot run a group with only two people, it has to be three participants in a group. This writer informed the patient that there will be a new participant coming to the group next week and hopefully the Women's Group can in fact occur. The patient informed this writer, if the Women's Group does not occur, she will explore other groups which this writer completely understand the patient position.
Menopause is described as the interruption of menses after one year of amenorrhea in a middle aged women, usually older than 45 years. S.B. is 51 years old, which is the average onset age of menopause. Menopause naturally occurs when a woman’s ovarian germ cell pool has been depleted. The onset of menopause is determined by the amount of eggs a woman developed during fetal life, by the offences those eggs faced over time, and by genetics as seen in the strong connection between the age at menopausal onset and the age at which other female family members experienced menopause.
As previously mention, hysterectomy is the most frequent non pregnancies related surgeries performed on women in the United States (Qi et al., 2013). Hysterectomies are the 2nd most commonly performed procedures among women of childbearing age (Everyday Health, 2015). The majority of women that undergo hysterectomy are usually between the ages of 35 and 54; within that group women between the ages of 35 and 44 have the highest risk of undergo the procedure (Right Diagnosis, 2015). 90% of the women are not really medically in need of the procedure, because they are not life threatening conditions such as uterine fibroid, endometriosis and uterine prolapse (Everyday Health, 2015).
Women in today’s society have a lot more power and say in what they can or cannot do.
