“The Tell Tale Heart” is a famous short story written by Edgar Allen Poe. The story was first published in 1843. This story is about an unnamed man who kills an elderly man due to his “vulture eye”. The man serves as the narrator in this story and describes to readers in detail as he carefully stalks the man, kills him and hides his body under his floorboards after he cuts him up. Eventually, the narrator’s guilt eats him alive to the point that he confesses his crime to three visiting policemen. His guilt takes form as the old man’s heart, which he believes is still beating underneath the floorboards. This short story is considered one of the Poe’s most famous short stories as well as a Gothic fiction classic.

In “The Tell Tale Heart”, by Edgar Allen Poe, the reader is presented with the short story of a madman who narrates his murder of an old man because, “he had the eye of a vulture --a pale blue eye, with a film over it” (Poe 105). The narrator has thought thoroughly about his plan to murder this old man, and the murderer then stashes his body underneath the floorboards. Eventually, his guilt overcomes him and he starts hallucinating that he hears the old man’s heartbeat. Ultimately, he confesses to the police about his crime after being driven to the point of insanity due to his remorse. “The Tale Tell Heart” is one of Poe’s best-known stories because he utilizes the elements of Gothic Literature to establish a disturbing sense of mystery throughout the story. Farida characterizes Gothic Literature as “the elements of fear, horror, the supernatural and darkness” (Foster 1), and Poe effectively adopts this style in many of his short story. These ominous characteristics give the story both a dark and spontaneous sequence of events that draws the reader in. In “The Tell Tale Heart,” Edgar Allen Poe employs several Gothic elements such as the setting, emotion, and the word choice in order to communicate an uncertain description of reality. In any case, Poe 's technique definitely holds your attention coming into the story.

The writer refers to her fetus as a child that was killed, this figure of speech suggests that the mother knows something has happened to her would be children, but the responsibility for the demise of the children may not be a reality this mother can cope with. What could have been but will never be is reverberated from the beginning to the end of the poem. It is clear that the figures of speech in this poem is saying that these children will never exist, but the memory of these souls will always exist as if a ghost haunting her

This poem does not read specifically pro-life or pro-choice, rather, it reads as sympathetic towards the hard decisions that the mother has made and her reflections on whether it was the best decision for her.

The mother has going ahead with tension and stress on account of her troublesome choices. The narrator convinces himself that he is merely expunging the Evil Eye from existence and not just killing the old man. However, eventually, the narrator is overcome with guilt that he mistakes for triumph which ultimately leads to the narrator’s mental breakdown. Using multiple, visionary, writing techniques, author Edgar Allen Poe enthralls and beguiles the reader into the morbid and dark plot of the “Tell-Tale Heart” that is ingeniously enveloped in an eerie atmosphere.

For this assignment, I have chosen the short story, “The Tell-Tale Heart,” by Edgar Allen Poe. In this story, the narrator is a mentally-ill man who has murdered an old man because of the ‘power in his eye.’ The story is written in the first person, where the readers are only exposed to the narrator’s thoughts and perspective, making this story a first person limited point of view. Because of the mental state of the narrator, as well as his desire to prove his innocence after he has committed a murder, it is safe to assume that the narrator is unreliable. There are events that may be twisted to his convenience, to gain sympathy from the reader or to try and make them understand his intentions in the same light as he sees them.

With pregnancy comes the gaining of weight and the protrusion of the stomach. The speaker compares herself to an elephant and ponderous house (line 2). This serves to not only how large she feels, but also slow and clumsy she believes she has become, which a sentiment most pregnant woman can identify with. However, the feeling of insignificance or like an object is more apparent towards the end of the poem.

This quote relates to the short story because it is insane too. While growing up his father left when he was 1 and his mother died of tuberculosis when he was 3. This particular story was written in the early nineteenth century. Poe wrote this story in a way to express his mental illness and how he coped with everything. Overall, Poe had a rough life and used his mad mind to write stories. This particular story uses elements like symbols/art, tone/mood, and characterization to express his mind and thoughts.

“The Tell Tale Heart” by Edgar Allan Poe is an erratic Gothic story told from the point of view of a narrator who speaks directly and passionately to the audience, engaging with them and challenging their views though the use of literary techniques. Poe’s personal context, which includes his depressing upbringing and later being shunned by those who closest to him (including his foster father) is reflected heavily in the text. This makes it easier for the audience to relate to the narrator’s character, and to thus experience discovery through the text by connecting with it on a personal level, showing how discoveries can vary according to personal context.

He writes about, the horror, murders. He has dark kind of storytelling in uttermost of his work, though uttermost of his poems are kind of sad.

Despite the huge amount short stories written and sold, Poe unsuccessfully tried to fix his financial situation. Poe 's life experiences, including his poverty, alcoholism, depression, and the deaths of those he loved, greatly influenced his short story writing.

When a child grows up throughout its whole life a mother will carry round a smile of joy and pride on her face, however this child does not have the opportunity to grow into the adult he is meant to be. Similarly in the poem ‘Prayer before birth’ in the third stanza the poet asserts “Think me” and “Live me” this emphasises the fact that the unborn child is going to be used by society for evil purposes. Normally a child dreams about the life ahead of itself and can chose the life it wants to live. In spite of this poem the child is not even born and its future is already planned out.
