When I was ten in Korea, my English teacher handed out a VHS tape labeled “Star Trek”. The video was meant to give a taste of American television to my young eyes. After watching two episodes of “Star Trek: The Next Generation”, I started a new life that was driven by technology.
Starting by reading old computer programming books even before we had a computer in our house, I was driven to explore a new world of computers by learning the machines. I used my computer skills to help other people in part to share my enthusiasm on the positive force technology can bring to our society. Over the years, I helped neighbors clear out spyware, connect the computer to the printer, publish a website, and even delete precious photos on a memory stick

Especially with the advent of the Internet, new issues of privacy, commerce, crime, and intellectual property are being developed in relation to our use of technology.
Since watching my first Star Trek episode, I always believed that technology will be a force of good. However, technology must also be understood and used correctly in order for the society to get the best use of it. Hosting my own website for over 12 years and helping other people along the way, I have a unique experience with computer technology that not only can contribute to my law studies but also to the law campus community.
The [Law School’s name] offers the atmosphere of a collaborative community that encourages student to work together in their studies as well as develop healthy cultural activities and programs. My previous contributions to student-run projects have been developing digital products (Websites, videos, and digital paintings) that enrich the overall project’s goals. Using my computer skills, I attempt to enhance our objective by bringing our project to the digital
The increasing power and functionality of technology has increasingly invaded privacy and complicated security. Technology has made it possible for the government to
Star Trek is a franchise that has been around for a very long time; it has been turned into books, movies and a television series. Television is one of the world 's most influential pieces of propaganda. Whether it is being used to promote the next president, sponsor the newest upcoming athlete, or tell you about your favorite show, television is used to influence the world and how we perceive it. The popular television show aired for the first time in 1966 and throughout the years has seen many important events in its lifetime. Societal issues that were present in Star Trek, such as racism, sexuality, war, and scientific theories, continue to appear in today’s mainstream culture, even decades after the show came to an end.
When Star Trek first aired, it wasn’t very popular. However, it has since gained a cult following and remains a very active franchise to today (Feinstein, 12) Television in the 1960s opened a door to a source of information and entertainment like never before. One of reasons Americans are so united today is because television in the 60s showed people what they had in common. Television signals weaved in and out of America, sewing us together and patching our
Intellectual property, or IP, is an area of secular law dealing with copyright, trademarks, and patents and is largely misunderstood area of law to the average user. Everyday people from all over the world go on the internet and copy and paste words, videos, and ideas for their own needs; “but the results of eras developing legislation and precedent now transitioning into the current digital age” have left most of us oblivious of how deeply it affects our lives (). The ignorance of the secular world in IP has not come full circle on “what is right” and “what is wrong”. At times it seems as if it was easier to ignore this thing called “copyright”, “patent”, or “trademarks” and keep moving on with our lives. “The digital age changed everything” ().
I am not a big fan of Star Trek so, when I told my husband I needed to watch Star Trek: The Next Generation for my discussion board assignment he was ready and willing to watch it with me. I am just not a Syfy person. I honestly thought the plot would be discussing a robot like R2D2 not human like. In the Synopsis Data defines himself as “an automaton made to resemble a human being” (Synopsis).
Technology is constantly upgrading everyday and it creates unique challenges for individuals privacy rights while there are regulators looking to preserve both privacy rights and technological innovation. For awhile now society has been struggling on how to balance privacy rights and emerging technologies. For example, early as 1890, Newspapers and Photographs were on the rise and legal scholars called for added privacy protections, including enshrining those rights in criminal law. As people have a right to protect their privacy, it is still a struggle while promoting innovation in this fast increasing technology world we live in today.
I just recently learned of the 50 year anniversary of the history of Star Trek. I would not call myself a
The concern about privacy on the Internet is increasingly becoming an issue of international dispute. ?Citizens are becoming concerned that the most intimate details of their daily lives are being monitored, searched and recorded.? (www.britannica.com) 81% of Net users are concerned about threats to their privacy while online. The greatest threat to privacy comes from the construction of e-commerce alone, and not from state agents. E-commerce is structured on the copy and trade of intimate personal information and therefore, a threat to privacy on the Internet.
“Whoever the hero may be, he or she journeys for us, carries us metaphorically into our darker side, […] where the monsters inside of us take on terrifyingly real forms, where our deepest wishes sometimes are fulfilled.” (Leeming 203, 204).
Ever since day one, people have been developing and creating all sorts of new methods and machines to help better everyday life in one way or another. Who can forget the invention of the ever-wondrous telephone? And we can’t forget how innovative and life-changing computers have been. However, while all machines have their positive uses, there can also be many negatives depending on how one uses said machines, wiretapping in on phone conversations, using spyware to quietly survey every keystroke and click one makes, and many other methods of unwanted snooping have arisen. As a result, laws have been made to make sure these negative uses are not taken advantage of by anyone. But because of how often technology changes, how can it be
For the viewers of early television programs, particularly the 1950’s series ‘Buck Rogers’, followed by the 1960’s series of ‘Star Trek’, the only term to describe the devices that were seen was ‘Science Fiction’. Over the next 50 years, from the first Star Trek episodes, the curiosity and interest has lead on to many other series, spin offs and action packed movies. Each new genre of Star Trek came with a new set of technological advances that could only be used by the super intelligent or the highly trained.
Privacy concerns on the web have become an undesirable consequence that people face with cyber technology. The ability of computers to gather and store unlimited amount of information from the internet raises privacy issues concerning an individual’s informational privacy. A person’s right to informational privacy is the ability to control the flow of their personal information, including the transfer and exchange of that information. An invasion of informational privacy denies people the right to control who accesses their personal information. Many internet users are unaware that they are more likely to compromise their privacy when using the internet services such as search engines and social networking sites. The internet provides access to an incredible amount of information from all over the world. Some internet users use the internet exclusively as a source of information while other internet users use the internet to create and disseminate information for others to use. However, the vast amount of information floating on the internet would not
Some of the issues that I would like to explore in this paper, are the intersection of information laws, and how they intersect with the ethical standards, and the actual practice. Since computers and technologies grow extremely fast, the laws are unable to govern new developments in the field. Therefor those that develop these systems and programs have an ethical imperative to, analysis the impact that these systems could have on others. When new technologies and standards are created, one must look at the effect of the technology, and the possible ways that someone could maliciously obtain, or misuse data.
Many users are subject of Security and Privacy on the Internet issue. The term "information" now is more used when defining a special product or article of trade which could be bought, sold, exchanged, etc. Often the price of information is higher many times than the cost of the very computers and technologies where it is functioning. Naturally it raises the need of protecting information from unauthorized access, theft, destruction, and other crimes. However, many users do not realize that they risk their security and privacy online.
The Internet is a beautiful thing. If our species looked back a few hundred years, we would never be able to fathom having the capability to communicate with another human being on the other side of the world within the click of a single button. The reality is here, the internet has become a massive impact on our daily lives. We think, work, and communicate via the internet on a daily basis, whether directly on computer or via an internet capable device such as a smartphone. It’s impossible to go anywhere without there being some sort of access to the network, and for some, it’s impossible to live without the internet. In developed countries, almost the entire region has the technological capabilities to run a network through their infrastructure. These increasing technological capabilities throughout the past few years have changed the way that information via the internet is processed and stored. In today 's society, what once was considered personal information is no longer what it use to be. We openly reveal what once was considered personal information for the everyone to read on a daily basis. Meanwhile, we enjoy every moment on the internet, but society fails to realize what really happens with our information when we browse the internet. Information privacy, defined as the ability of the individual to control when, how, and to what extent his or her personal information is communicated to others is one of the most important ethical, legal, social, and political issue
