Standards Are Falling In Children

Christensen had an English teacher her freshman year of high school that had caused her embarrassment when she a differing pronunciation of the word “lawyer”.From then on, Christensen would over analyze everything she would say. As minor as her experience may have been, it caused her to developed a complex regarding her verbal communication. This complex remained with her through the years and later impacted her teaching methods.

Junie B. Jones is a twenty eight book series written by Barbara Park for ages five through nine. The series had been under close scrutiny due to the main character Junie B.’s lack of maturity and self discipline, also, her language and mispronunciation of words. There are some that even believe that Junie B. actually has some form of learning disability. But what if all of her disciplinary issues, her shouting in class, her immaturity, and even some of her speech impediments stem from not her own learning incompetencies, but her teachers’. Recently I read ‘Feed’, by M.T Anderson, a dystopian novel about how advancement in technology is negatively affecting our society and the way we communicate with each other. The author led me to believe that these advancements, such as texting, are causing our language to deteriorate. Further research proves that texting may be improving and many are learning to accept. When the era of the written word dies, will we be left with an illiterate generation with poor grammar? Students are texting constantly. She notes that speaking with a mix of formality and casualty that is called consultative speech will help teach those in poverty what is the acceptable behavior at school. Those who do not speak with speech that shows formality can be taught another phrase for what they are trying to say.

The article “Are We Raising a Generation of Helpless Kids” by Mickey Goodman appears on the Huffington Post, an online news aggregator and blog. The author focuses on explaining that children who are allowed to make choices and decisions on their own should be a thing of the past. He also touches on the idea that children learning valuable life lessons in our generation are not getting things done. The article tells the reader that the parents of the children today should prepare their kids for failure in life, and show them how to actually succeed in life without handouts.

He describes how modern teaching methods leave a student vulnerable to the “prejudices of their elders”, further stating that a good teacher must always be skeptical. He states that “in addition to owning genres, a discourse community has acquired a specific lexis” (Swales). While I was observing Mrs. Lechlitner’s class I was instructed to take very detailed notes. After thoroughly reading through those and Ms. Tibbets’ interview answers, I still was not able to come to a concrete determination that teachers have a specific lexis. While they may not use a specific set of words, in an elementary school you can not speak like you would in a high school. I did external research finding that teachers “use a lot of procedural and control talk…because he or she introduces new curriculum topics”; however, I was still unable to find anything that led me to believe my chosen discourse community participated in a specific lexis (Seifert). Mrs. Lechlitner tended to use a different tone with her students versus with her peers and Ms. Tibbets stated in her interview that when speaking to students you talk in a way that you would not to your coworkers. Even though I was not able to find specific words or phrases that these James Bowie teachers use, I did conclude that they spoke in a “child talk” when they were referring to their students. Gender coding is not a natural or biological characteristic. People are born with different physical and biological characteristics, but make sense of their gender roles through cultural influences. “Stereotypes are amazingly powerful, and we may not realize the degree to which our thoughts, beliefs, and actions are shaped by them” (Silverman, Rader, 2010). Boys and girls are labeled as masculine or feminine, which is considered the “norm” for society. Children are not born masculine or feminine, they learn these roles from parents, peers, media, and even religion. Concepts of gender identity are sometimes placed on children even before their birth, such as with the selection of paint colors for the nursery.” Children begin to form concepts of gender beginning around the age of 2, and most children know if they are a boy or girl by age of 3” (Martin & Ruble, 2004). From an early age, children are encouraged to identify with gender coding. Gender is formed at birth, but self-identification as being male or female is imbedded into their minds by parents and society. A child learns to understand their gender role and their identity by what is taught and expressed to them by others. Yet as a child grows, gender coding can cause cultural confusion, and insecurity issues throughout the course of their life.
