Standardized Testing Provides an Inexpensive and Reliable Indicator of Student Learning and Achievement
The question of assessment in the "school system, individual schools, and teachers has evoked strong and sometimes violent emotions from the educational community, the general public and their legislative representatives"(Brown & Knight, 1994). Assessment based on standardized tests has been looked at very closely over the recent years, and some people have even mentioned that they be eliminated completely. Those who feel traditional methods should be replaced by alternative methods. These people feel that demonstration, exhibition, investigation, oral response, portfolio, and written response's are all examples of

Maeroff feels that there are many weaknesses of standardized exams. The students get no feedback about their performance in the exams. The exams do not do much to increase students motivation in their want to learn. The exams usually force the students into surface learning, with the students clearing their minds of one subject as they prepare for exams in the next subject. How students perform in traditional tests depends on so many factors than can grasp on the subject being tested. Lastly the examination scripts are usually marked far too quickly; therefore the assessment is not reliable.
The second article I read indicates that standardization is of little importance if the results of assessment are to be used in isolation from all other factors. "If the purpose is simply to learn about the state of a single subject, a unique assessment might be devised to furnish the information desired. However, if the assessment is to be used for the purpose of comparison, generalization, or decision-making, standardization is essential"(Linn, Baker, Dunbar, 1991). Standardized testing achieves standardization by norming practices, machine scoring of multiple choice questions, precise instructions for administration, and standard formats for tests and recording responses. These results can compare individual results to an established standard. Another benefit to standardized tests is that in these days with shrinking budgets, the
In America standardized assessment is controversial because some feel it limits the overall range of education by only teaching the material present in examinations. Using this style of testing methods to assess students also can have negative effects on the child such as
“Tests today are not like the tests most parents took when they were in school. New forms of teaching students' work are already in use, and even more changes will be coming in the years ahead. The term "assessment" has come into common use to describe these new ways of measuring students' accomplishments.
Standardized testing has become a controversial topic in recent years, parents, students, teachers, principals and almost anyone who has a relationship with education is affected by this topic. People are either for or against standardized testing, some believe it is the only fair way to compare students others believe that the tests are too greatly stressed in school and are a nuisance to education. Standardized tests are stressed greatly, students learn testing material all year not focusing on anything else deemed unimportant by the test makers. Every student has the same amount of time and question on tests; they also are tested on the same subjects which the test makers believe are most important for children to learn. Standardized tests are used for many things such as ranking students on a national basis and government funding for schools.
Standardized testing has become something of a norm under the No Child Left Behind Act. It has left the student and teacher responsible in having high test scores and has forced teachers to teach directly by the curriculum. What standardized testing does do is help develop memory, but at the cost of creativity (Emanuel 9-10). This is the problem behind standardized testing is that it has become linear and obsolete (Emanuel 9-10). It has been noticed by many for example Sir Ken Robinson said,” Testing in principal is a logical way of measuring student knowledge”, but he continues by saying that, “In practice it creates a very dry learning environment”. This shows that the No Child Left Behind Act and standardized testing is not working,
There is so much to consider when talking about assessments. There are all kinds of different types of assessments. There are assessments that happen on a daily basis in the classroom and then there are the tests that everyone knows about; the state mandated assessments, map test, and some know about DIBLES tests. These are the types of tests that parents, teachers, and administrators debate about. The debate is whether or not these test are doing students any good or harming them. It is good to have data on student and school’s progress, it keeps everyone accountable however, some believe that schools are testing too much. That all this time focused on testing is actually taking away from learning time. Each type of assessment has it’s own set of challenges.
According to the educators and parents, standardized testing, in its current form, is a bad idea for the following nine reasons — stakes are too high, test scores can’t accurately measure learning, teachers are “teaching to the test”, standardized testing eats up instruction time, high stakes have led to cheating and score manipulation, tests include cultural bias, poor timing keeps teachers from utilizing test results and the test anxiety impedes learning
When I was younger I always saw my older siblings dread going into highschool and I never understood why. I mean, you get more freedom, you can drive, and you’re that much closer to graduating. What’s not to like? Well, let’s just say I was too young to understand everything that went along with high school. The loads of homework, being in sports, having a job, and trying to have a social life along with your busy schedules. On top of that, you can’t forget the horrid tests every high school student is forced to take. The SAT, ACT, ITBS, MAP, and COMPASS tests are just a few of the tests we have to take throughout our four years. Two of those tests are optional, but the rest are mandatory. You’re given a set amount of time
36. 20. 18. These are numerical results from an important standardized test that can traumatize a student. Do you believe having students stress over whether to pick between answer choices A through D are effective ways in improving their education? Although standardized testing is an essential tool for teachers, it is a stress builder for students.
In the words of the famous theologian Plato, “Human behavior flows from three main sources: desire, emotion, and knowledge. Common knowledge tells us that the Earth is round. The Majority of humanity understands this simple fact as truth. This piece of information has played crucial roles in history, despite that the information persists as not vital for human existence. It has changed the actions of many individual's lives. As a result of this idea many believed that if an individual sailed too far ‘over yonder’ that the individual would fall off the face of the Earth. Ultimately the thought process of falling off the face of the earth,at that era in time led the average person's behavior into not striving to reach out towards the horizon,
A standardized test is a state exam that is given to students to see how much they progressed through the school year. Some test are used to determine if they need special help that they cannot receive from one teacher alone. On the positive side of standard testing it is a reflection of how well the teacher taught that year,it also shows if the students had a good understanding of what the teacher taught. On the bad side Standardized test can cause a mass amounts of stress on the human body.Trying to study everything that you learned in 9 months into 1 week can get very stressful. The Research starters say that standardized tests are culturally and socially biased and that educators do not understand the variables that contribute to test scores.
Ever since standardized testing started being used as a way to evaluate the intelligence of students and the teachers’ ability to educate, the standard of actual education has been diminished immensely. Standardized testing is used in most public and private schools to analyze students’ knowledge. It has affected the way in which students learn and has corrupted the methods teachers use to educate. In some cases, English-Learning and disabled students face discrimination from teachers since teachers have more responsibility to have a high number of passing students. Some countries around the world don’t use standardized tests to rank their students or schools and yet they have been successful. Standardized tests are not efficient on making students learn, they should not be used to evaluate students’ knowledge.
Standardized tests are exams that are supposed to measure a child’s academic knowledge but have long been a controversial subject of discussion. Although it is one method to see how a child is performing, is it the best method? Standardized testing can be biased or unfair, inhibit both the teacher’s and the children’s creativity and flexibility, affect funding for schools, cause untested subjects to be eliminated from the curriculum, and cause anxiety for children and teachers.
The debate on standardized tests and its adequacy in testing a student’s knowledge about a subject has been going on for many years. Tests, in general, has been around for centuries and without them there would not be progress and no gleams of progress. Students ranging from elementary school to high school have experienced standardized testing. Teachers, educators, and parents are also involved in the students’ lives, which revolves around the tests, one way or another. There are many views on standardized test. However, the three most common views are: educators who are for standardized test which benefits students, educators who are at the other extreme of opposing standardized tests, and educators who view tests are a benefit if done in appropriate amounts.
Standardized tests take much of the creativity out of education. The teacher would have to test, and wouldn’t have as much time to be able to be imaginative. Doing this makes the students dumber, and less equipped for real life because they haven’t been taught all they should know to go out in the real world. This is because the teacher spends less time instructing the students to try and prepare for the test. When teachers have to “teach to the test”, it leads to “declines in teaching higher-order thinking” (Valli 1). When students have to learn specific things, without being able to vary it, it makes them less intelligent than they could potentially be. Standardized tests seem to mainly focus on skills like math and reading instead of focusing more on all of the other subjects like fine arts, history, and physical
Chances are, your children or yourself has taken a standardized test at least once in their/your life. Standardized tests can be overwhelming and stressful, leading the takers to believe they will not perform as well. There is a solid argument against standardized testing. Without it though, the education system would go haywire.
