Nestled among the modern skyscrapers of Midtown Manhattan, you could be forgiven for mistaking the striking Gothic architecture of St. Patrick’s Cathedral as a medieval artifact in the heart of New York City. Though not quite that old, the storied cathedral is renowned for its beautiful Neo-Gothic design and rich history. Not too many people, however, realize the true story behind one of New York City’s most iconic and celebrated landmarks. Here’s a quick look at the hidden history of the famed St. Patrick’s Cathedral.

For people in Texas they get excited for rodeos or a Cowboys football game but, down in Louisiana on Bourbon St they have a 2 week span party called Mardi Gras. From Shrove Tuesday all the way to a day before Ash Wednesday. Each night has a small parade until the last 5-7 days this is when the big parades are. Social clubs like the Krews organize Mardi Gras. Girls who go can win prizes like get thrown mardi gras necklaces from the boys above. For the men their is only one big prize called The REX .

Memorial Day is held in honor of the brave soldiers whose lives were lost while serving the US military. This normally falls on the last Monday of May and is considered the start of the summer season.

The true meaning behind Memorial Day, a federal holiday, is to commemorate the men and women who have died during combat for our nation’s freedom and safety of the public. We dedicate only one day towards the departed soldiers by honoring them for their service in our nation’s military, but from my perspective Americans need to honor their soldier’s more often. A personal example of extending Memorial Days’ time frame is my neighbor who always keeps an American Flag on her front porch with a sign quoting “Land of the free, because of the brave”. This shows that the families of deceased soldiers are the ones who are affected by their loss on a day by day bases, such as my neighbor. The festival of Mardi Gras came to North America from Paris, where it had been commended following the Middle Ages. In 1699, French adventurer Iberville and his men investigated the Mississippi River from the Gulf of Mexico. On a recognize 60 miles south of the present area of New Orleans, they set up camp on the stream's West Bank. Realizing that the day, March 3, was being commended as a significant occasion in France, they initiated the site Point du Mardi Gras.

What is Memorial Day? It is an important day in which we remember all the lives that were lost of people who were in the armed forces.

The date is May 30th, 2016; Memorial Day. I, along with some of my friends, are participating in a scavenger hunt that has lead us to the cemetery in our hometown. After finding the item hidden in the maze of gravesites, I cannot help but notice that the two flags next to the military memorial stone are in disarray. Immediately, I run to the flags and begin to fix them on their thin wooden rods, slowly but surely returning them back to the state of honor they once were in. After I finish, I stand back to look at the small flags flapping in the wind and I cannot help but feel pride in the country I am so lucky to call home.

Men and women all around the world put their life on the line just to make sure our country is safe. Memorial Day is the one time throughout the year when we honor veterans who died for us. When I think about all the sacrifices that veterans have made for us, I feel we all have to appreciate them more than we do. Memorial Day means a lot of things but to me it is a day which we honor all of the people who passed away while serving. They should be remembered for their good service because they kept us safe.

Thanksgiving is a holiday when the whole family gets together and feast. In my family this is when all of my family members come together. The thing about my family is that we are like a broken family. Everyone doesn’t get along. So that causes a lot of problems on the table. My family is also outspoken and they like to start trouble. So that’s when the arguments start.

To me, corned beef and cabbage is the must meal for St. Patrick’s Day with my family. To most Americans, St. Patrick’s Day is a drinking and partying holiday. I have spent time experiencing both sides of the celebration, but I know when I return there will always be left over corned beef and cabbage for me to eat. According to my mother corned beef and cabbage had been something my family has prepared on her mother’s side. My maternal grandmother is British and moved to America at the age of 19. Many of my grandmother’s family live in the United Kingdom. My stepfather first traditionally ate corned beef and cabbage when he moved into my mother’s family’s house. My stepfather also enjoys drinking Guinness, Irish beer, during St. Patrick’s Day.

All around Louisiana, the people celebrate Mardi Gras in early spring. Urban cities such as New Orleans and Baton Rouge utilize fancy bright lighted parades, celebrity kings and queens, and shiny beads to celebrate the festivities. Growing up in south Louisiana, I attended many of these parades in the Big Easy. My grandparents would tell stories of rural Mardi Gras and the Cajun culture. After hearing their stories, I decided to attend the courir de Mardi Gras. The courir de Mardi Gras is a traditional Mardi Gras event held the Tuesday before the catholic lent season in small rural towns. This is known as Fat Tuesday run.

For a short time in Ireland many were faced with a hard decision due to the struggling with starvation in a time of famine. With this hardship many made the difficult choice to leave their country and seek refuge in the United States. The individual that I interview had family that lived in County Cork, Ireland and they decided to make the journey to the United States in hopes of a better life. Her Grandparents came to the United States through New York and changed their last name by dropping the prefix to make it more American. They moved to Cleveland and her grandfather was able to find work at chief Boyardee to support his family. Many traditions have been passed down from generation to generation. Celebration St. Patrick’s day was always an important day for this family. This was a time to eat traditional Irish food, music, and Irish folk dancing.
