The St Marys Saints caused a minor upset when they toppled the Peninsula Seagulls 38-22 in the Sydney Shield second Qualifying Final at Campbelltown Stadium last Sunday. On an opening weekend of finals where 46 tries were scored in the four games played, it was the Saints that set the made the biggest impact in qualifying for a Preliminary Final appearance. In a remarkable start to the match, Belrose made the most of regaining possession after the kickoff rebounded off the legs of Mounties lock Ben Whitehouse straight to Eagles hooker Dave Marando. Two tackles later, Belrose second rower crashed over to open the scoring inside the first minute. Blake Nichols converted to give the Eagles a dream 6-nil start. In a heartbreaking loss in game one, Centenary rallied from an 8-2 deficit to take a 9-8 lead in the bottom of the eighth. However, Trinity scored two in the ninth for the thrilling 10-9 win. With Centenary down 8-2 in the fifth, the Maroon and White erupted for five runs to cut the deficit to one. Quintanilla walked and Schimpf singled to put runners on the corners. Mounties trailed by 12 with five minutes remaining, but two late tries and a Mitch Cornish sideline conversion secured that both teams shared the points. Granby came out in the 1Q with a heavy dose of Giovanni Jones, and it was making Jamestown sick as they had no answer. In the last round of the season, Churchie played an internal match at Brisbane Grammar’s fields at Northgate. The E / F teams were reduced to just one team due to unavailability, illness and injury. Parents and supporters witnesses a free flowing match which brought credit to both teams. The D team did however defeat the E, F team 45-17 in a hard-fought contest.
Things got start with a bang, when Dawson Martin took off for a sixteen-yard run, showing speed and nice field vision. Martin would close out the drive on a 2-yard run to make this a,6-0 game. A two point conversion run by,Elijah Malcolm made the score,8-0, with 9:05 left in the quarter.
Emotion can carry a team just so far and that's how this one started. On the Bulldogs first drive their multi-talented quarterback,Aaron Latiolais was sacked by,Connor Sheehan. Sheehan has been injured on and off this season, so to see the young guy get involved early was nice. Latiolais recovered nicely as he connected with, #3 Brock Williams all the way to the Green Wave one-yard-line, with 3:37 left in the quarter. From there the Heath line blew up a large hole for Latiolais to walk threw, to give Heath a,6-0 lead, The point after kick by #17 Tayte Duncan, to make this a,7-0 lead at the 3:23 mark.
