The St.Lawrence river is a large tourist attraction for northern New York. With invasive species being introduced to the river and the land surrounding they have affected the way the river looks and the species that are in it. Any plant or animal found outside of its normal range is considered to be invasive to the area it is now located. There has been an estimated 163 invasive species that have been discovered in the Great Lakes and the St.Lawrence since the late 1800’s. Of the 163 species that have been unintentionally introduced to the area, 85 of them reside in the St.Lawrence river. The variety of non-native plants and animals in the St.Lawrence river and surrounding land have had a continuing negative effect on the native ecosystem.

Purple Loosestrife (Lythrum salicaria), is a plant native to Europe, Eastern Australia, Asia and Northern Africa. Through history, this plant has been used as a medical herb for the treatment of dysentery, bleeding, wounds, ulcers and sores. The introduction of the Purple Loosestrife, through shipping, has caused disruption of waterflow and the crowding out of native species. Each individual Loosestrife plant can produce up to 2.7 millions seeds , this has helped it overtake native species, such as the cattail. Very costly and difficult to remove, Purple Loosestrife numbers show no sign of decreasing. The Water Chestnut (Trapa natans L.), is an aquatic plant species native to Europe. Introduced much like the Purple Loosestrife, the Water Chestnut is a plant that thrives in shallow depths of rivers and lakes, but can spread to deeper waters. Due to the coverage and over population of the Water Chestnuts, navigation, livable habitat and recreational activities are all affected by the plant. The beds of Water Chestnut also provide a perfect breeding ground for
The Battle of Lake Champlain was an important victory because it created a dent in the British plan to invade from the North and it ultimately convinced the British to surrender the War of 1812, which caused the US to gain worldwide respect. To begin, the British had been trying to invade America from the south, but they had very little success. They then decided to try and invade from the North, using Plattsburg, a city on the shores of Lake Champlain, as their headquarters for the invasion. This is why it was so vital that the US won the Battle of Lake Champlain because it hurt the British plan to invade by destroying a major part of their plan. This also convinced them that it would be too difficult and expensive for the benefit they would
a canoe or kayak trip, the Ogeechee Tiver is a great place to spend an afternoon outdoors. Put a boat in one of the many landings or stay along the banks; anyone with a fishing license can fish legally along the banks of public rivers. On August 19th 1955 the state of Connecticut was flood that filled many of the valleys causing approximately $185.5million in damages and 87 fatalities. The flood was caused by two back to back hurricanes rains from Hurricane Connie and Diane that totaled from 13 to 30 inches of rainfall within a 24 hour period. The Naugatuck River, the Farmington River, the Quinebaug River, Mad and Still Rivers were hit the hardest destroying 563 homes, the majority of which were located in lower Naugatuck Valley and Beacon Falls. Since this great flood many new ways to control this situation have been developed and put in place, such as many damns but by the Army Corps, to protect the surrounding towns.
The St. Lawrence boulevard is one of the most known and talked about road in Canada. In the collective imagination, it has long been the street that separates Montreal in half. Which is quite understandable as the St. Lawrence boulevard is the backbone of the great French-speaking city. A city born from its river, founded downstream of the mighty Lachine rapids, which form a natural barrier for ocean-going ships, Montreal turns its back on its majestic stream. But it is as if to throw oneself into an otherwise tumultuous torrent which, from the wharves of the St. Lawrence to those of the Rivière des Prairies, rolls its course from one side to the other of the island of Montreal. St. Lawrence boulevard is the matrix of
Despite the Great Lakes/St Lawrence Lowlands great economic success there are many issues that plagued, plague or will plague the region. One of the largest concerns is pollution and health of the environment. An immediate effect of this is acid rain which has been commonly reported in the area which leads to less sugar maple being grown in the area which has aa effect on the economy.
Invasive species are plants or animals that spread to a non-native ecosystem and cause harm to that area. Common characteristics of invasive species include their ability to permit a variety of conditions, produce lots of seeds or eggs, separate easily, has long growing period or quick reproduction time, and their new environment has comparable conditions to the original habitat. Invasive species most often have negative impacts when they are transported to another environment. A recent study done by the Center for Aquatic Conservation describes the effect some invasive species have. In various states of the U.S, it has been found that invasive species are costing more than “$200 million a year in losses to commercial
There is a huge and beautiful state park in the center of the Twin Cities in Minnesota as Northern United States of America, which is called “Fort Snelling State Park”. The park is the place of coexistence between nature and human resources. There are not only wildlife animals such as Turkeys, white-tailed deer, fox snake, and coyotes, but also there are a lot of human resources like biking trails, fishing, camping, and lodging for visitors to stay with eco-friendly and be in harmony with nature in the center of big city. At the Fort Snelling State park, there are several terrestrial and aquatic invasive species. What do we mean by aquatic invasive species? They are plants and animals that live in the water and are not native to Minnesota.
The Great Lakes-St. Lawrence Lowlands is also known as the smallest geographical region in Canada. This region was formed almost 500 million years ago when a glacier began to recede at the end of an ice age resulting it to melt. The size of this region is 180 000 km2 and provinces located here are Quebec and Ontario. The climate here is very humid and it has very cold winters and very hot summers. Plants found in this region include white/black spruce, white birch, jack pine, etc. Animals found here are chipmunks, mourning doves, cardinals, etc.
There is one more aquatic invasive species. Have you ever seen the aquatic invasive species on the lake? This is Eurasian Watermilfoil, which are also found at Fort Snelling State Park. It was suddenly introduced to North America from Europe. The main reason why Eurasian can rapidly reproduce is that a single segment of stem and leaves can take root and form a new colony through stem fragmentation and runners. / Reproducing from lake to lake creates numerous amounts of new stem fragments while they cling to boats and trailers. / There are biological control and Invasive species program, which is to curb the spread the growth of Eurasian Watermilfoil. Using minimum of herbicides and imposing mechanical removal are to reduce them, but there is
The Illinois River is a very interesting tourist stop, with everything from being a part of the setting in the novel, Where the Red Fern Grows, to the current use of the river for entertainment. The Illinois River has many uses, some important and some for fun. The many attractions draw people in to explore the river. The location of the Illinois River is something not a lot of people know, because the name indicates it would be in Illinois. The river is actually located in Oklahoma and runs through Arkansas.
An invasive species is a plant, fungus, or animal species that is not native to a specific location and one point should be noticed is that invasive species does not have to come from another country. For example, lake trout are native to the Great Lakes, but are considered to be an invasive species in Yellowstone Lake because they compete with native cutthroat trout for habitat. Although there are some invasive species arrive with spread and establish populations, like the native butterflies feed on non-native plants in California, the alien trees help restore abandoned pastures to a condition suitable for native plants in Puerto Rico and even the much-maligned zebra mussel helps filter toxins from great lakes, most policymakers regard invasive
Currently, an invasive species, phragmites, is under management in King Rail inhabitation areas such as the Walpole Island First Nation, Point Pelee National Park, and St. Clair National Wildlife Area. To remove the phragmite, its extensive root systems should be targeted to prevent the plant from growing again from its
There are currently 6,500+ invasive species that have been found on park lands, 70 percent of those invasive species that were documented are plants (“Invasive Species…..What are they and why are they a problem?” 1). Something that is even more worrying is that five percent of park lands are dominated by said invasive plant species (“Invasive Species…..What are they and why are they a problem?” 1). Approximately ten percent, or 650 species, have been found in marine parks (“Invasive Species…..What are they and why are they a problem?” 1). Other than the national parks, what else is being damaged by invasive
In the last years, invasive species have i remeber sypupchanged the Great Lakes ecosystem. These changes have affected the economy, health, and recreation. Once invasive species entered the Great Lakes its hard to stop them. Some examples of invasive are sea lamphrey, zebra mussles, round goby, and alewife just to name a few. Zebra Mussles are a problem because they clog pipes, stick on everthing and anything, eat native species food, and clean waters alowing sunlight to come in the water thats gives power to nasty plants to grow. Asian carp are of concern because they have been found in nearby waterways that eventually connect to the Great Lakes. Scientest began to construct a eletric fence to prevent asain carp from getting in the Great Lakes.
Eichhornia crassipes commonly referred to as Water Hyacinth is a free floating weed that is commonly found sharing a habitat with S. molesta (Shanab, Shalaby, Lightfoot, El-Shemy 2010). When temperature, radiation, and sunshine duration increase the density of E. crassipes increase and this causes large amounts of phenolic allochemicals in the water where the weed is located (Shanab et al. 2010). Placing the phenolic allochemicals in the water could have a purpose of helping water hyacinth to invade the bodies of water in a fast pace (Shanab et al. 2010). Water hyacinth is known as one of the top ten weeds in the world (Shanab and Shalaby 2012). The allelochemicals co incur with the environment, and E. crassipes release fatty acids, polyphenols,
