Spies cannot afford to display or have emotions associated with normal humanity, if they start to show human emotions in the field that doesn't have a meaning on their mission they will surely get killed or severely wounded. A spies life must be turned to ash and built back up to black and white so they don’t see the colour anymore. Results are always shown when the soldier/agent/or spy keeps his professionalism up at all times and keeps specific morals that will keep him alive and get the job done so others can be safe. “It is not fashionable to quote Stalin but he said once, "half a million liquidated is a statistic, and one man killed in a traffic accident is a national tragedy.” This is true in war, many soldiers are forgotten because there are so many that they become a statistic and not a tragedy. The many that died in the World Wars and Wars and the Cold war were all statistics, Leamas network became a statistic when he became the sole survivor in West Germany network. The novel is based truly on a true story of the author when he was a spy, and the men that died became a number. Many war/historical novels the main character has the same drive, and they want to see the next day. Many war novel are like that, that’s one reason why they enlisted, That drive was the same drive Leamas had when he first enlisted. The main character is memorable because the things he says and the type of character he is, he is undercover and shows people he doesn't care: "Miss Crail: 'Is your handwriting legible?' Alec Leamas: 'Except on weekends.'" (page 127). Another part of the novel has a important character in Leamas's development is a woman named Liz. After she spent a considerable amount of time together with Leamus. Liz and Leamas become lovers, he is unaware of Control’s plans to use her for later. Soon after the relationship begins Leamus is struck down by an illness and Liz tenderly nursed him back to health. "'We have to live without sympathy, don't we? That's impossible of course… one can't be out in the cold all the time; one has to come in from the cold… d'you see what I mean?' Leamus saw.
