“The Smile on Happy Chang’s Face” by Tom Perrotta takes place during a Little League championship game and is narrated by the main character, Jack, who is also the umpire of the game. In his short story, Perrotta illustrates an introspective Jack by making Jack talk share his thoughts and feelings about his family, neighbor, the Little League baseball players and the players’ parents. Because the story is told through Jack perspective, readers are able to have insight into Jack’s character and this makes it easier for them to understand why he had the feelings and thoughts that he shared. For example Jack’s way of defining masculinity and femininity allows readers to understand his thoughts about his son and the girl baseball players.

The time had finally come for the boy and his father to head downtown to the stadium. As they got closer to downtown, traffic began to back them up for miles. The boy began to worry that they would ever make it to the game on time, creating an illusion of an endless line of cars blocking them from the stadium. Alas, they made it through the disruptions and had arrived at the ball park, the boy looked on in awe, as it was bigger than he ever imagined. Their tickets were scanned, and walked to their seats, first row behind the dugout; the most plum seats in the whole place. The game began with the toss of the first pitch, as the opposing batter stood at the plate; the crowd let out roaring boos. The boy asked his father why they were yelling at the player, his father began to explain he had been caught cheating with steroids and will forever have an asterisk next to his name because of it, all the fans despised him. As the game carried on, each team went back and forth scoring runs until it was tied in the bottom of the 9th inning. The boy’s favorite player was up to bat, and with one swing of the bat, sent the ball over the fence for the game winning homerun. A nuclear cheer erupted throughout the entire stadium as everyone celebrated winning
The Johnny gasped and turned white as a ghost then red with rage. While all of the other boys were looking at the Ponyboy who was drowning, Johnny pulled a knife out of his back pocket, I gasped I knew what he was going to do seconds before he did it. “Wait!” I screamed, but the boy didn’t even acknowledge me. I turned around, I couldn’t watch. This reminded me too much of Yaqui beating me up, but this was different, these boys fought unlike we did. The way we fought it wasn’t killing each other or anything like that, but it was almost worse. Being humiliated in front of the whole school. Both Ponyboy and I got hurt though mine was both mentally and physically. The only other thing that I could see that connected our two lives was that we both fought back. Well actually Johnny fought for Ponyboy, but it’s pretty much the same, in the end the bullies both got what they deserved. No, that’s not true, nobody (even Yaqui Delgado) deserves to die. By the time I turned back around the boys were driving away in their car and the boy who had been killed was slumped on the ground not moving. The other boy; Johnny was helping to pull his friend; Ponyboy out of the water
“Take your base,” yelled the umpire as Kevin was hit with a pitch on his back. Kevin trotted at a snail's pace down to first base, his face was filled with agony as he grabbed his rib cage. As the game proceeded the pain from the pitch increased but Kevin thought it would eventually go away so he played through it. The game went on and it was close all the way till the end but the Stars pulled out the victory. They are now the 2016 South Carolina 2A High School baseball Champions. The team went crazy, the fans rushed onto the field to celebrate the victory with them. The team and the fans were bumping and brushing up against one another while they were screaming and hollering. Kevin was in the middle of the crowd with all his friends and
It was a chilly Monday night as I finished putting on my baseball uniform. I was nervous because it was the championship game. We were playing our rival team, the Yankees. My close friend Tom was their pitcher, and he struck out a lot of people. Tonight, I was going to get a hit off of him. At least I hoped so. I heard a beep in the driveway and realized it was my mom who was ready to go. ¨ Coming Mom!¨ I shouted through the garage door. As I jogged to the car, I could not stop thinking about getting a hit off of Tom.
As I am sitting in the stands looking around at the parents near me, it is apparent that various ones are more serious and competitive then others. Some parents just wear the colors of their child’s team, and others have shirts that actually say the team name. Although they all are quite different, they have one thing in common. They are willing to suffer the heat filled air to support their children in their activities. Walking onto the field, the umpire comes announces with his deep, gruff voice that it is time to start the game, triggering all of the parents to rush onto the bleachers. Listening to the sounds of bodies hitting the bleachers, they boys rush out of
All of a sudden, we see John signed up. We were as sad as a boy who dropped his ice cream. I didn't know what to do. He was going to take my spot on the team. “I knew he would sign up!” said Alex. After school was over Alex came over and we practiced hitting and fielding until dinner. “I hope we're ready for tryouts.” I said. Tomorrow we saw John. “Hey losers, which one of you is trying out for the team.” John shouted.
I hope you learn how they both teach us a lesson. The book Teammates has a different approach compared to The Other Side. Teammates has a different approach by showing that adults have a complaint about Jackie in a violent way, considering, on page. 13, in paragraph 1, for example, it says, “Many opposing players were cruel to him.”
After getting in a fight at school, Thomas Valles faced suspension, instead White negoritates Valles punishment to be joining the new boys cross country team. Little did he know how life changing that team would be not just him, but all of the
Everyday life is filled with events that control how we react and respond to individuals around us. Positive events such as holding the door open for someone or helping someone finish a task trigger a response of a “thank you”. Negative events such as being honked at or yelled at can sour someone’s mood and may cause grumpiness for a while. This story talks about how the peaceful Sunday afternoon full of joy, happiness, peace and freedom can change in minutes to a day full of negative emotions a that can ruin a day. When Larry’s mom views her son having a good time while playing in the sand, she feels content and happy watching him play. She thinks of how happy the boy is digging and she has a warm feeling while enjoying the moment. She even thinks they need to do this more often. We get the feeling that this is a tranquil moment in her life. There is no indication of how Larry feels towards the other child named Joe in the sandbox, but we can assume that Larry is indifferent to Joe at the beginning. Joe’s actions start a chain of events that result in an unpleasant day for this family of three.
In this story there are two brothers (twins) that were separated at birth so they don’t know that they are twins. They run into each other and Sam wanted Trevor to switch with him so that Sam could play baseball instead of act. Trevor had many doubts about this but did it anyway. Throughout the switch they keep in touch. While Sam is out playing baseball he comes to a problem. He can’t hit a curveball where Trevor could, also he isn’t a switch hitter like Trevor. There is a big game that is coming up and scouts are going to be there. Sam and Trevor switch. Their parents find out after the game that they switch. Sam’s parents are kind of mad but realize that they can’t keep twins away from each other. So they share custody of them even though they don’t have the same
