Split is the newest film from the writer and director, M. Night Shyamalan which his name became a joke since he has created some disasters films mostly in the category of action and blockbusters. However, with the 2015’s The Visit he has shown signals of his recreation of the genre as well as a sign for his return to thrilling form. As this was my anticipated film of the moment, I was vastly surprised from this movie. At this point, we could agree that M. Night Shyamalan has been returned and welcomed by other audiences in return form for thrillers. Not only does this film succeeds his career in recent memory, but also creates an unexpected supervillain origin story that is a form of a rarity these days.

However, with the film Split it breaks this stereotypes instantaneously. It may trick most audiences as a straight-up thrilling film, as three girls including Casey Cook (Anya Taylor Joy) gets kidnapped by a man named Kevin (James Mcavoy). As it seems that the man has OCD and perfectionism, as the days increases other unusually uncommon events occur as different personalities or identities are expressed. Half way, the film reveals that the man named Kevin has a rare psychological disease called ‘Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID)’ and has distinct 23 different personalities that live in Kevin one form body. First off, the film’s entire premise and the plot is very unusual and interesting as in cinema history, this range of ideas hasn’t been thought out. The film does handle this idea in a fascinating method and a classical method that does not follow similar routines of modern day film storytelling. Also, it has a sense of ‘fun’ as the film essentially knows how to express these different identities and has fun playing around with them. Most of all, James Mcavoy is
Gentrification is the term that explains the process of renovating and improving homes, or a district to conform to middle-class preferences. As viewed in the documentary Class Divide, a neighborhood in Manhattan, New York called West Chelsea has already undergone a major shift in their community. The addition of schools such as The Avenues, and tourist attractions like the High Line has generated a new identity for the community. Children who are born in poverty in the United States have a harder time getting out of poverty than those children who come from other developed countries. This is due to various institutions such as The Avenues that have created a gap between social classes, making it harder for the lower class to achieve success. Throughout the documentary, the storyline constantly shifts to represent two different point of views: the upper class and the lower class. Within these different points of views, the central themes become evident: income inequality, opposing views of privileged and underprivileged students, and the gentrification of a community.
Like in every college, there are social groups or fraternities and sororities as we call them now. In the inspiring movie, “School Daze” by Spike Lee shows the constant conflict within African-American community over hair texture and skin complexion. Lee used a college campus, “Mission College,” because in the late 80’s and early 90’s, college campuses gained popularity in the black communities. Culture, stereotypes, and audiences displayed throughout this film. So what actually goes on during this inspirational film and why did Spike Lee make it?
M2 - Use different sociological perspectives to discuss patterns and trends of health and illness in two different social groups
The film A Better Life (2011) includes many sociology terms which allow a better comprehension of the culture and conflicts in the film. The following terms from the text Mastering Sociology (2014) of Chapter 3 give insight about the movie. The first term which acknowledges the basis of the entire movie is culture. The use of culture allows the understanding of groups with traits such as language, beliefs, norms, and behaviors which are passed on through generations to keep the culture alive. In this film, it is noticeable that the Mexican/Hispanic culture is being reflected throughout the movie as the characters speak Spanish, a language spoken in Hispanic cultures.
The movie “Sixteen Candles” is a 1980’s teen comedy film. It’s about this girl named Samantha Baker and her family forgets her 16th birthday because it’s the day before her sister Ginny’s wedding. When she was in study hall, Jake picked up a sex quiz that she had taken and was meant to be seen by her best friend Randy. Sam panics because the quiz contains
This essay will critically discuss the Bee Movie and explore the relationships between the Bees and Humans in the film linking them to Marx’s theory of class. Karl Marx (1818-1883) was the founder of Marxism, he is one of the few sociological leaders to see their theory carried out within their lifetime. Marx believed that society was built on conflict between two groups, ‘Most societies are based upon exploitation of some groups by others. Those who own the means of production (such as land, factories, raw materials or capital) exploit those who work for them, and who lack the means to produce things themselves’ (Langley, 2004). This is seen as a capitalist society. Marx’s theory of class is present throughout the Bee Movie. Marx stated that
Dissociative identity disorder was also known as multiple personality disorder until it was renamed by the American Psychiatric Association (APA) in 1994. This disorder was first seriously studied by Pierre Janet of France in 1883. DID has been recognized since the late 1800s but has recently in the last year seen a spike in interest from the public. Many give credit of the newfound interest to a recent movie highlighting the disorder; “In Shyamalan's latest film, "Split," actor James McAvoy plays the villain, a man with 24 personalities who abducts and torments three girls in a windowless bunker. The film opened at No. 1 this weekend with more than $40 million in domestic sales” (Nedelman, Michael. “What Shyamalan's 'Split' gets
Routinization is the way people go about doing something. It’s a method to organize chaos and when practiced it accomplishes the goal quickly and effectively. There are different methods used, but ultimately routinization produces the desired result.
The film ‘Split’ revolves around Kevin Wendell Crumb’s story, a man diagnosed with dissociative identity disorder which resulted from the psychological, emotional, and physical abuse he suffered from childhood. Kevin (the original personality) claims that he has 23 other personalities “living” inside his body and each of them has distinct characteristic. Some of his “identities” shown on the movie were Dennis (the serious one who suffers from OCD and is extremely protective of Kevin); Hedwig (the naughty 9-year old boy); Patricia (the cross-dresser) Barry (the leader of the group, decides who gets to take over Kevin’s body), Jade (the diabetic one) and the “Beast” (his 24th identity- Kevin and Hedwig’s “protector”). Aside from the abuse he suffered from his parents, Kevin was also a victim of bullying when he was a kid. He’ employed at Philadelphia zoo and has no close relationships with anyone other than his psychiatrist.
According to Durkheim, Social fact or social phenomenon are the main subject matter of sociology. He said in one of his pieces that social fact must be studied distinct from the biological and psychological phenomenon. Social order is the trend of behavior being used to exercise power over another person. It has become rules and regulations that have been set up by some authorities to be obeyed by another group of people who are being undermined in a society, it is a situation that oppressed people and limits them from their liberties. When people go through these situations they cannot function the way they are supposed to function because they are limited by their freedom. These social orders are not only laws but rather certain norms created by the authority to put a whole race into a situation where they are very far from freedom of speech, movement, and knowledge. African Americans are an example of a race that has been through discrimination at workplaces, schools, community etc. They are one race which has been a label or put in a class where the situation will never permit you to climb the ladder of success. Although you might have all the certification, qualification, the best schools, etc. but the fact that you came from the poor class or the lower class, it becomes very difficult for the Caucasian people to give you the opportunity you deserve, because of this, the citizens of American have been grouped into different classes which are upper, middle, working,
