Carnival Cruise Lines: Fire Aboard a Stranded Cruise Ship In the early morning hours of November 8, 2010 the aft engine room of the Carnival Splendor ship caught fire, and left the ship without power. The Splendor ship is one of the largest ships in the Carnival fleet with 13 passenger decks. The ship is so large it requires six diesel engines to operate. Half of the engines are located in the aft (or rear) engine room and the other half are located in a forward engine room. These engine rooms are connected together by electric switchboards and cables. “The blaze was extinguished within a few hours by crew members with the aid of the built-in fire-suppression system” (O’Rourke, 2013, p140). Fortunately, no crew or passengers were injured (O’Rourke, 2013). The Splendor ship had been inspected regularly pursuant to the Coast Guard and all regulations. It was designed by Italian shipbuilders to “ensure that damage to a single generator and switchboard wouldn’t inhibit the rest …show more content…
Around 6:00 a.m. that first morning, passengers reporting smelling and seeing smoke from the back of the ship. The cruise director, John Heald, made frequent announcements for both passengers and the crew, to keep them informed and calm during the fire, and afterwards as plans were being made on what to do next when the engineers were unable to restore power. “After the fire, Carnival Splendor was about 200 miles south of San Diego and dead in the water. Originally scheduled as a seven-day cruise from Long Beach to Puerto Vallarta, the new objective was to safely transport the passengers to a port as soon as possible” (O’Rourke, 2013, p141). The United States Coast Guard, the Mexican Navy and the United States Navy all worked together to get assistance to the ship and passengers for the next three days as tug boats pulled the large ship back to San Diego (O’Rourke,
2. Suppose a customer buys an iPhone from Apple for $500 on January 1, 2010. The cost of the iPhone to Apple is $350. Assume that the customer is entitled to upgrades over the next two years. Use the following financial statement effects template (FSET) to illustrate the financial statement impacts for Apple of the customer's iPhone purchase on the date of the initial purchase and at the end of each of the two years following the initial purchase under generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP).
I made this replica icebreaker boat from the book “Ship Breaker.” I thought it was a good idea because almost the whole book is about the people on the boat and how they survive it.
On February 9, 1942 at New York City's pier 88 crowds gathered to witness the largest ocean liner in the world, the USS Lafayette be on fire. The Normandie was intended to set sail under the U.S. flag on February 14th, 1942.9 The conversion crew requested more time on February 6th because they believed the conversion would not be completed in time, their request was denied and were put in a frantic state to complete it in time. The time given for the conversion crew did not give them enough time to clean and prepare their work places making the condition more and more unsafe until it practically became more normal to them. At approximately 2:30pm a welder in the first class lounge of the SS Normandie was put under pressure with the short time frame to complete the job and did not move the life preservers which eventually ignited the fire. The Normandie's modern firefighting system was disabled during the conversion and once the New York Fire Department arrived
The short story The Boat by Alistair MacLeod is narrated by a man who comes from a fishing family. His mother’s side of the family has forever lived and worked by the sea and continues this tradition. The narrator’s father always wanted to be an academic, but worked by the sea to support his family. The parents’ characters seem to clash in many aspect of their lives and this is very evident in the passage.
We think that daily spot hire rate will likely decrease next year. There are two reasons. First, there are 63 new vessels scheduled for delivery in 2001 to increase the supply of vessel and only few old vessels need to be retired, while the demand will not increase because imports of iron ore and coal would remain stagnant over next two years. Second, exhibit 5 shows that avg. spot rate of 2000 was higher than the rate of previous years and avg. 3-yr charter rate. In addition, the market will seemingly go up after two years. Therefore, ship owners should hope to sign short-term contract through using lower daily spot hire rate rather than locking low daily high rate for a long period.
The 85 who stayed with the train died when the storm surge overran the tops of the cars. The dead bodies were so plentiful that entombing all of them was impossible. The dead were originally weighted down on barges and dumped at sea, but when the gulf currents washed a lot of the bodies back onto the beach, a new resolution was needed. Funeral pyres were set up on the beaches, or wherever dead bodies were found, and burned day and night for numerous weeks after the storm. The authorities passed out free whiskey to withstand the distressed men conscripted for the horrible work of collecting and burning the dead.
Example of weaknesses that Carnival Corporation & plc has is their safety record. In early 2012, the Costa Concordia struck off the coast of Isola del Giglio, Italy. In 2013, Carnival Cruise Line’s Triumph reported a fire, which left the ship adrift in the Gulf of Mexico (Carnival Corporation & plc SWOT Analysis, 2016). Among the other cruises, Carnival Cruise Lines have notably been the worse. In 2009, the Center for Disease Control tracked all major outbreaks, about 56% on Carnival cruise lines compared to a 48% average market share from 2009-2011. The company is also accounted for worse safety record for persons lost at sea. Since 2000, about 179 disappearances happened with Carnival Cruise Line alone (Levin , B., Jones, J., & Slade, T., 2012).
Should the Government watch our emails and social media accounts?Would this help America become a safer and prevent terrorist attacks against the United State of America.Or will people rise against the Government watching them and not allowing it.So I will run you from some of the details about this question. So will Americans allow or not allow the Government to spy on them.
In “The Shipwright”, Melvin B. Tolson expresses the nobility that is gained through a combined and incredible effort to create an amazing feat. An image of a sword symbolises this theme. A sword such as this is an object of nobility that would be used to lead an army into battle. “The galahads of the dock” calls to mind nobelity, unselfishness and purity, as a galahad is a knight of the round table. These shipwrights are portrayed as having the nobility of a knight wielding a sword. The sword is a feature in many epic stories, and building of this boat is considered an “epic of industry”. Just as one sword can not win a battle, one man can not build such a epic boat. To do so they strike “catholic notes” much
I have made it to Upper Canada and it was quite the journey. It was scary making the decision and going without all of you. I knew that this was a one time chance and I might not even make it. Not going to lie I was pretty traumatized by everything that I saw on the ship. Making this decision was really hard because I knew I would have to face many problems and there would not be anyone there to help me. Starting off the coffin ship it self was a totally new experience. All types of people were suffering from deathly diseases and putting their lives on risk knowing that they might not even make it, just for a better future. There were little kids crying because some of their parents didn't make it and had to be thrown overboard. I honestly
In ancient Greece, the people of Athens dedicated a memorial in honor of King Theseus by preserving his naval ship in the port. This “ship of Theseus” stayed in port for hundreds of years. As time past, some of the wooden planks of Theseus’ ship began to rot away. To keep the ship preserved and presentable, the rotting planks were replaced with new planks made of the same material. This is where the key question lies; if you replace one of the planks, is it still the same ship of Theseus? This question addresses one of the most interesting problems in all of philosophy, namely the problem of identity. How do things stay the same even after they change? At what point does an object become different? When we talk about a certain object and say that “it changed,” what exactly is “it”? Some maintain that changing one plank changes the ship and makes it no longer the ship of Theseus. Others claim that as long as there is at least one plank from the original, it is still the original. There are also
Would you sacrifice your life and happiness for someone else to give them a life of perfection? Alistair Macleod; raised in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, known as the protagonist and author of The Boat began to realize that his happiness isn't the only thing that matters. He told his father that he will stay by his side as long as he lived. Then he was suddenly gone. Alistair had no idea whether his father left because the sea wasn’t the right life for Alistair, or for himself. In The Boat Macleod conveys the idea that sacrificing happiness for another can ultimately lead to internal and external destruction through the use of irony, the protagonist's journey, and symbolism.
The guarantee of work, an excellent benefit that offers to employees and the quality of training program at the Seafarers Harry Lundeberg School of Seamanship are the reasons why I want to be a Merchant Mariner. A Merchant Mariner career provide an established job and the outstanding of income to the seamen moreover, it also offers a great benefit to cover their family. With the prospect of jobs demand a merchant mariner has opportunities for growth in the marine jobs and it has high level demand to serve the maritime shipping industry, particularly in the private sector like a cruise ship and cargo industry that operate around the world. These private sector depend on the Merchant Mariners to perform preventative maintenance on equipment and delivery cargo on time. Base on the world consumer and the US economy depend on cargo ship and Cruise ships to support gross domestic product.
The short story “The Boat” by Alistair MacLeod is narrated by a man who comes from a fishing family. His mother’s side of the family has forever lived and worked by the sea and continues this tradition. The narrator’s father always wanted to be an academic, but worked on the boat to support his family. Through this passage it is evident that the parents’ characters clash in many aspects of their lives and are in constant conflict. MacLeod demonstrates this through the use of repetition, the contrast in other unrelated ideas, and through information that is withheld.
Is it possible for children and young adults to live in a lifestyle that is formulated upon the idea of libertine rather than structured liberty? “The Parable of the Ship”, found in The Republic, by Plato and written at around 380 BC, is a perfect example to show how in a situation with no control, wise decisions are not predictable. In a situation in which too much power is granted to those who do not know how to manage it, utter chaos and disorder may be the product. In the same way, when school districts and or universities grant too much power and authority to the attending students, rather than to the teachers or instructors, the students may feel entitled to more rights and benefits than what they should receive. If the people that are
