Spider-Man: Homecoming is a look back in time to the life of young Peter Parker experiencing a double life as a teenager in high school and a superhero, unsure of how to use his powers. Unlike other Spider-Man movies, Homecoming “takes Peter Parker in a fresh direction” by making him a teenager “and actually investigating in that world rather than using it as a backdrop” (Goldberg). Jon Watts’s innovative, new look into The World of Spider-Man is a great start to his career as a “big time” director. Before working on Spider-Man: Homecoming, Watts was known for his movies Cop Car and Clown. Working on this Spider-Man was something Watts was extremely excited for as he “had been wanting to make a coming of age movie” (Watts). Spider-Man: …show more content…
Realist writers put an emphasis on developing characters and getting to know who they are including their strengths and weaknesses, which Spider-Man: Homecoming does a great job portraying. While most superhero movies portray the hero as a fully developed crime fighting machine, Homecoming is most concerned with Peter’s “psychology and his personal arc” (Nelson). That being said, the focus is not only on the amazing hero Tony Stark is directing him to be, but also the responsible young man he is becoming- in and out of the suit. In works of Realism, characters of the piece are always given a name and it is always personalized to the character like it is with Peter and his story of who he is as a teenager and who is is working on becoming in the future as a hero worthy of working with Avengers other than Stark. Continually, Homecoming’s focus on Peters teen life after the incident with the spider bite and his parents passing, but before he is a full blown superhero is what makes this movie extremely unique. Although Parker grows a lot as a hero and person, in the movie, he still has a far way to go. As Richard Roeper, columnist, film critic for The Chicago Sun Times and co-host, alongside Roger Ebert, of At the Movies puts it, even “with his budding superpowers, he still has the impatience, the awkwardness, the passion, the uncertainty, and …show more content…
Along with the everyday struggles of highschool drama, Spider-Man: Homecoming “reinvents the typical Marvel hero as a shy kid with a severe highschool crush” (Orr). Peter spends the majority of the movie trying to impress the gorgeous senior at his school, Liz. It can be difficult trying to juggle impressing her, when he keeps having to run off to save the world every time he gets a chance alone with her, and can’t tell her why. Peter also acts slightly irresponsibly by using his powers at times to try to win over Liz, just setting him back in his personal growth, and making Stark think he is not trustworthy enough to join The Avengers. In addition, it also becomes apparent early on in the film that hiding his secret life from his nerdy best friend, Ned is going to be quite the challenge. Ned’s first encounter with Peter as Spider-Man is when Peter is coming home and “literally climbing through a window in his Aunt May’s apartment, crawling across the ceiling as one does when one is spider-bitten, taking off his mask as he turns around and seeing his best friend, Ned, sitting there in shock” (Mondello). Following this event Peter tries to tell his best friend that he is in fact NOT Spider-Man, but hard-headed Ned knows this is not the case and continues to ask questions. It is after this encounter with someone in his daily life that Peter realizes he needs
destruction that Avengers made while fighting the aliens in the movie The Avengers and he ended up getting fired. Afterward, Peter Parker (Tom Holland), who is Spider-Man is recording his trip to Germany, to fight along Team Iron Man against Team Captain America. After he arrived, Peter gets a new suit from Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.), who is Iron man. Then he puts it on and starts doing the stunts that he did in the past movie, Captain America Civil War. He was also recording other superheroes and the
Black Widow. But the female super hero is not going to get her own stand alone movie. Instead, she will make various cameo appearances in other Marvel films. One such movie is Spider-Man: Homecoming. Marvel’s Cinematic Universe is filled with multiple characters that have the ability to cross over. In Spider-Man: Homecoming, Tom Holland will be reprising his role as Peter Parker. Remember the kid that impressed Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) in Captain America: Civil War? Reports indicate that Johansson
