Special Education teachers help develop an IEP, or Individualized Education Program, for each student with disabilities (“Educating”). The IEP process is evaluation, determination of eligibility, and development (“Understanding). IEP’s take time to fill out because of the details. Special Education Teachers have to fill one out for each student they have. It is important that IEP’s are filled out properly in order to correctly track each child’s individual progress. Some IEP’s can be ten through twenty pages on average, sometime more. Paperwork and meetings are also a large part of the job for Special Education teachers. Not only are they covering the materials that are needed, but each student is learning in a way that is best for them. Special Education teachers will use various, but simple, techniques, such as more practice, explanation, repeating information, and devoting more time to work on skills to help their students learn. The teachers lead every student through the education process (“Educating”). Schools use many different strategies to help students receiving Special Education services in order to succeed in general education settings. Some of the strategies are assistive technology and modifications (“Understanding”). Assistive technology is any type of software, equipment, or system that can be used to improve the education of a special needs student. Modifications are lessons or sources that are changed to meet the level of needs for each student. Each student has different needs, ability levels, learning methods, and how they understand what they are being taught. Different instructions and individual teaching methods are needed for each student. This is another different, sometimes difficult, task Special Education teachers have to do compared to General Education teachers. It is harder in multiage classrooms (Ferry). Teacher may also have to use special software to create lesson plans and IEP’s. Technology is becoming a huge part in teaching special needs students. Interviewing the special education supervisor has made me aware of how important my role is as a regular education teacher to special students who need additional support in my classroom. In this case the IEP is the best tool to communicate the needs of the student. This is the first step I and the special service personnel take in communication and collaboration with each other. I follow the goals and strategies that are presented in the IEP in order to meet my students’ needs. At the same time, these information helps me design lessons based on their learning disability and best reach each student. Another important part in this collaboration is to keep the case carrier inform about the student’s development, and for this part I use report forms that I email to the case carrier. Also if there is an issue with the student I right away inform his/her case carrier and counselor, and they always help me resolve the problem. For

The special education teacher is in charge of informing the family on when and where the Individualized Education Program will take place. The family of the student will discuss the necessary content of the individual’s program, how reports will be received to express the child’s progress, and who will be included within the Individualized Education Program team. There will also be considerations in the development of the program, the specific role of the regular education teacher, and the requests of review and revision of the Individualized Education Program. Overall, the family plays a huge role in developing the Individualized Education Program and the parent’s consent must be obtained in order for the IEP to go forward or even be altered.
In 1991 the Public Law 94-142, the Education for All Handicapped Children Act was replaced by the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act. Special Education is a type of instruction designed to help disabled and gifted children use their full learning abilities.
