Special Education: Collaboration In The Classroom

Collaboration is key to any school, grade, and the student because it helps with sharing the work load, providing new ideas, and ability for the teacher to not burnout. Besides collaboration with school colleagues it also needs to be amongst the teachers and parents. Because children need to have their parents involved and they need to give their consent of whether they approve of their student being in special Ed. Another thing is that the parents also go through a lot with their child being considered an ESS student. First of all, my own educational experience with Special Education was mainly taking the students out of the classroom no inclusion. The classroom is structured as an inclusion where the students do not leave the classroom but no communication at all between both teachers. The special teacher comes in and only sits with one of the ESS student and leaves the other student alone. There are two students in my class that are under the ESS and both of them have speech difficulties. Another thing with the ESS teacher is she is usually on her cellphone when she should be helping both students which in my opinion bothers me. But again my mentor does not say anything whatsoever. In conclusion, collaboration with school officials, parents, and the child are very important. Inclusion within the main classroom is vital to nondisabled and disabled students because it creates awareness and understanding of the differences. Labeling students without really getting to know them just jeopardizes their future where their self-esteem is real low. General teachers and ESS teachers need to have that collaboration in order for that child to succeed in school.
