Speak When a close person suddenly stops talking, expressing, and doing what they love, what can be done? The book Speak is a story about Melinda and how she experienced rape by one of the most popular boys at school, Andy. The book narrates how Melinda couldn’t tell anybody about her trauma, even to her family and friends, because of her fear of ridicule and bullying. By narrating the story of Melinda, the author, Laurie Halse Anderson, teaches the reader the importance of expressing a person’s feelings and opinions by speaking. When Melinda had a stressful and embarrassing encounter with Andy at the cafeteria, she tried to run but was stopped by Mr. Neck, who said, “Where do you think you’re going?” Melinda stays silent, not expressing anything; …show more content…

Neck assumes she was messing around, making a note in his book, saying, “I knew you were trouble the first time I saw you.” This part of the book narrates how Melinda does not believe that anyone would listen to her and take her seriously or care. However, Melinda didn’t communicate her situation and why it caused her to get in trouble. This quote demonstrates how communication is needed and is important for a person to understand and know what is happening to not misunderstand a person’s actions, which is what happened to Melinda and Mr.Neck. Melinda’s struggle to talk affects her again later when the school notices that she is skipping school and failing in all her classes, making her have a meeting with her parents at the office. In the office, Melinda’s mother and father expressed their frustration and disappointment with her work at school and Melinda not talking “Why won’t you say anything?” “For the love of God, open your mouth!” “This is childish, Melinda” “You are only hurting yourself by refusing to cooperate.” The mother and father blamed the school, saying Melinda suddenly became mute and quiet when she started going to
