Spartan Canada had its last East Coast of Canada event of 2017 and it was big one! A complete all in one Trifecta weekend! The race weekend actually started on a Friday with the Sprint, had the Beast course race on Saturday, and finished up Sunday with the Super!
• Registration and Festival:
On Friday, registration wasn’t bad at all and that was even after they had a system crash and had to wait for the system to boot back up and when it did, they lost half of the registrations, and they still got everything back up and running quickly and then adjusted to the lost data and got the lines moving fast. Sunday registration moved fast as well.
The festival was setup in a close area with everything right next to each other and a lot of the

The course designer actually really kicked ass and designed a course that went away from the festival area and came back multiple times. All three versions of the course had obstacles out away from the festival area, but they all used the same basic design a returned several times to the festival area where spectators could watch their friends and family complete multiple obstacles and cheer them on and take great action photos.
I actually saw one younger girl doing the course and near the end her mother and father were only a few feet away encouraging her to complete each obstacle, which was totally awesome!
As far as the obstacles go, because of how things ended in 2016 with the previous Spartan Canada East Coast management, this new company had only a few, if none of the obstacles so they had to build a completely new arsenal of obstacles. To do that, they reached out to Platinum Rig and had them build quite a bit of their obstacles for them. Because of this, the Spartan course doesn’t feel like a Spartan America or even a Spartan Canada East Coast race of 2016. I personally was happy about this, because when you have done over 60 Spartan races, it’s nice to see some new things.
I originally wasn’t going to do a Spartan race in Canada this year, but I was hearing mixed reviews from friends and fellow racers and decided I needed to see for myself. I actually was very
The course started in the woods and had a short distance walk/sprint and then exited the woods and came to the first obstacle of the day, Berlin Walls, which on Sunday even though it rained a little during the night, was still covered in lots of mud. The course then continued on for a little bit and made came to Mud Mile 2.0, I enjoyed this
Also, as Document B describes, the Spartan boys had no footwear and had to wear one clothing throughout the year. This helps for future wars when soldiers have to endure extreme conditions. However, it also leads to the fact that Spartan education was overemphasized on physical fitness, not much of “academic learning” we focus on
We finally got three practice laps so we could feel what the track was like to ride. Next we immediately started trials meaning we raced to get the best 14 riders to continue to the main event that night. I was in two classes The 250 and the 450 so I had two chances to make the main event. 250 trials was the most difficult because there were 28 riders, and only 14 could go on. Now nobody really tried on trials it was just a chance to be good enough to make it to the next round. I was 7th out of the 28 so I ended up getting 7th gate pick for the main event. The 450 class had its pros and cons. There were usually less riders, but I rode a 250, a bike almost half the size, but racing against harder competition can only make your better. There were only 20 of us in the 450 trials, and I gave to the best of my ability to get the best gate pick I could get and ended up being
Any society that abuses their children deserve to crumble. Sparta was a city- state in ancient Greece that was focused on military training. They didn’t focus on the children but too much on military training. The weaknesses of Sparta outweigh the strengths because they lack education, boys are taken away from their families at a young age, and they are abused.
Although, Sparta had weaknesses they did have the strongest military of their time. The Spartan army perfected a battle formation called the phalanx that is still talked about today. Sparta’s weaknesses still outweigh the strengths because of the reasons I listed above, they lacked education, they didn’t last over 300 years and they abused their
The Spartan State was a militaristic force to be reckoned with, and is famous for the values that were expected of their people. These Spartan values and militaristic system of government is described in a document by Plutarch (45-125 CE) regarding Sparta after the Lycurgian reforms, specifically after
Imagine fighting to the death with your peers in 8th grade, battle training from the age of 7, and never meeting your parents for 14 years! Well, all Spartan boys had to go through this and much more. They had to fight against their peers to survive in harsh conditions of the Spartan culture. The Spartan civilization was one of the most well renowned Greek city-states. This civilization had the strongest warriors and defeated Athens in the Peloponnesian War.
1st- A positive aspect of the Spartan Code was the idea to train their young beginning at a young age, by giving power to the state to control the youth. This allowed many of the children to have an equal opportunity in the situation given although they did not have many options. They could all be taught the same concepts, and this would create more unity among the people which was very important, although the method by which they took action upon this was somewhat controversial.
“The Spartan army was considered one of the strongest of its times, it was smart and through it natural selection, and its training, the soldiers that emerged from their training were some of the most efficient fighters the current world had ever seen. ”(“Spartan Warriors.” Ancient Warriors.) While Sparta was well known for having great warriors who were excellent on land, the Spartan army also branched out and became skilled at fighting on the sea’s too. At one point the Spartan’s had their own navy which was used to attack their enemies and
This was my fourth year in a row participating and running the Killington Beast on both Saturday & Sunday. My right knee has been so bad this summer that I wasn’t intending to go to Killington this year, but the knee started feeling a little better and I got the OCR itch again and had to go do it!
There were many parents who brought their children to the event. This is because it is important to spend time with your children, especially on weekends when they may have no other obligations. When a child would scream or cry for whatever reason, subjects would turn and look around for the source of the sound. When someone is in distress, especially a helpless child, one must see if they can be of assistance. Most people would look away after locating the child and not respond when they saw someone else was with them. This is because it is no longer their responsibility if someone else, such as the perceived parent, is handling the situation. Older children were helping younger children on the rope swing and pillow trampoline. Young children need to be shown and taught what to do in situations they are not familiar with. Older children must teach them in situations where adults cannot, possibly due to size or age constrictions. Small children would play in sand boxes or other sanctioned off areas while parents sat on the outskirts watching them. There are specific areas that only people of certain size/ages can play in so they will be safe and it is the job of a parent or
If some Spartan men pass the test they will become full citizens and Spartan soldiers also being fully committed to be a soldier for a long time. The Spartan soldiers continued to live and train in barracks with other Spartan soldiers. However, being a Spartan soldier is a very important to the Spartan culture because those soldiers are what keeps Sparta safe especially the soldiers wives and children that could be future Spartan
From about the time of the Persian invasion until the Battle of Leuctra, Sparta was viewed as the powerhouse of the Greek city-states. There were numerous reasons behind their success, but there are few that stand out as the most prevalent. Spartan boys are born to be warriors, they are sent to the Agoge at the age of seven and forced to abide by the Laws set by Lycurgus the Lawgiver. Spartan men never had to worry about chores or any work that was done in the kleroi, allowing more time and focus to be dedicated towards militaristic training. The Spartan army had the ability to call upon the Perioikoi and Helots if need be as extra warriors, which became a significant advantage at time. These reasons, along with
Spartan's were a dominating army that were more strong then all of the of the other armies from different city-states. now we need to know what they did at home while the men were at war. It's like when the U.S. Army goes out for war, what do the rest of the military soldiers go when the rest are at war. This is something that we need to discover from the Spartans and we also need to know if the strengths outweighed the weaknesses or did not.
The poetry of Tyrtaeus illustrated and explained Spartan culture, ethics, values and ethos by highlighting their nobleness, bravery, and strength. He stated that citizens only boasted and fought when they were able to stay fearless and valiant through times of chaos and panic. “For none can boast...maintain a hero’s part / Unless he fearless and intrepid bear” (Tyrtaeus, Martial Elegies, Elegy 1). Every citizen, even the honored fighters, were humble, equal and shared everything with the other citizens. They had the qualities of a fighter and the ability to make it through a war remaining courageous the whole time. This was because fighting with the Spartan Army was an honor. “This is a man’s best, greatest, noblest praise / And shall to youth
