In even the most primitive civilizations, the extra-terrestrial has had immeasurable influence on society. Mankind has always had an urge to explore the great unknown, and answer the most fundamental questions of our existence. Space exploration deserves not only to be a top priority in our nation, but much more funding than it already has, because it is rooted with history that has taught us many things and will continue to do so, it will help us advance technology beyond the scope of commercial innovation, and it can answer the greatest questions that every civilization has tried to answer.
We have grown a society since JFK announced, on July 29, in front of the entire world, that we would launch a satellite into space. Four days later, the USSR responded, saying they would also launch a satellite into space. This was a direct challenge to the United States, this was a competition between mighty opponents. The space race was spurred due to the fallout of World War II. Tensions were high, but no one wanted to start a war. So the Space Race provided an alternative. However, NASA has helped to develop a multitude of technologies that were the product of working toward more efficient space travel, including artificial limbs, cell phones, long distance communication, solar panels, and many others (Spector). Technology will always grow in a stable environment, but rarely will such major innovations occur in consumer products (i.e. Phones, Computers, etc.), because consumers will be content with a bigger screen.
