Southern California is not a state people should not be living in anymore. There are days where it is immensely hot at times, last week in Downey, people had to go through days where the temperature would reach 103 degrees for days and finally ended the following week. Even though people in southern California do not have to worry about winter and the 5 to 10 inches of snow like Chicago gets annually, people should not live in Southern California for its depletion of water sources and the fact that it gets overwhelming hot, while people only live here because of A/C. There are many reasons why no one should be living here and the ones that give a good reason why people should, is heavily outweighed but the disadvantages.
One major disadvantage is the water situation. It was just recently that the L.A Times came out with an article explaining that, slowly but surely, the southern part of California is coming out of this drought. Adding to that,

For those who don't know, certain areas such as; “Cape Mendocino to the Mexican border. San Diego, Los Angeles, and Big Sur are on the Pacific Plate. San Francisco, Sacramento and the Sierra Nevada are on the North American Plate”(Lynch). These areas are where people are afraid of earthquakes, afraid of the “big one” that will eventually come, “Scientists say it’s possible for Southern California to be hit by a magnitude 8.2 earthquake. Such a quake would be far more destructive to the Los Angeles area because the San Andreas fault runs very close to, and underneath densely populated areas”(Tribune Content Agency). For this speculation, it has many people on high alert and has caused a rise in the price for earthquake insurance to ¨$800-5000 per year¨(Blankstein and Alba). If the “big one” were to hit us now, California would lose millions of homes and suffer so much damage it would take a lot of money to come back from that kind of
After more than five years of drought in California, we are just now beginning to see an above-average precipitation, and this is leaving many to ask, "is the drought over?" This last drought was one of the worsts droughts California has experienced in history and it left many panicked and trying to come up with solutions. “Governor Jerry Brown even made one of the first cutback to farmers ' water rights since 1977, and ordered cities and towns to cut water use by as much as 36 percent ” (Zamora,et al..) Overall California has 39 million residents and on top of that California also grows an unbelievable amount of
Last NFL season for the San Diego Chargers didn't went so well going for example they went 5-11 and losing against the Cleveland browns, but now they have a fresh as they just announced this week they were moving to Los Angeles and now called Los Angeles Chargers. However some fans are disappointed with the owner's decision because after 50 years of franchise in San Diego. Although the NFL wants the chargers back in San Diego the owner Dean Spanos says Is a fresh start for the team, but many of the owners that invest on ownership are upset of them leaving. The reason why some fans are really heated and betrayed Is Dead Spanos promised “Not only did Spanos say that keeping the Chargers in San Diego was a priority, but he also promised to give
This historical timeline of government mandates and corporate processes demonstrates just how much they have made the current drought even worse, and has transformed what would looked like a natural disaster into an unnatural one. The drought will have a tremendous social impact on California; executive orders now make it essentially illegal for citizens to take showers longer than five minutes due to punitive fees . People and corporations will have to drastically alter the way they do business now. Housing developments will have to subside and the drought will, I imagine, make housing much more expensive, thus forcing people to move away. Peoples’ idea of the California lifestyle will shift into one that embraces conservancy and environmental awareness. The same goes for the farming industry. Droughts in California have always been a threat to the state of California, but it’s a shame that these historical developments had to make this problem even worse. Yet, the state will have to adapt whether its citizens like it or
In the beginning of the 20th century Texas discovered a major economic game changer. In January of 1901 in Spindletop, Texas oil was discovered in the form of a 100-foot geyser. Little did Texans know that their lives and economic situation would be changed forever. Right after the discovery most of the early profits made from oil went to easterners. When the 1920’s came around oil became a major economic engine. Causing major social changes in job opportunities, education, marriage, and sports.
The state of California is getting worse instead of better. “Just over 95 percent of the state now faces severe drought conditions and nearly 60 percent is in exceptional drought the highest of five rankings by the US drought monitor”(source 2).
California is due to be hit by an earthquake with an high magnitude of 8.0 comparable to the 1906 San Francisco 7.6 earthquake.
According to NASA studies The Great North American Mega Drought is predicted to happen within the next few decades (Howitt). California being one of the states heavily hit by this drought and it is already evident that the mega drought will happen. Central California was once one of the most fertile lands on the earth is drying up and the Sierra Nevada snow packs are melting away. The cause of the drought can be directly attributed climate change. The Ridiculously Resilient Ridge is an area of persistent high pressure that redirects moist subtropical air to the north. The ridge causes atmospheric water to flow around the pacific edge of California and move up north into Alaska and British Columbia. Leaving us with precipitation deficits and
Change is coming to California, whether you like it or not. We are in the period of necessity. There are a lot more people than there were 50 years ago and our water system is not prepared for it. This drought is causing a lot of things, and people are not taking it seriously. Sixty percent of water in California is used for irrigation and agriculture, and forty percent is used for the actual people.
This isn’t the first time California have been a drought, so why would this be the last? There is no confirmative explanation for droughts, yet, otherwise California would be prepared and would have done all they can to prevent it. Some believe this drought is caused by global warming, previous politician’s decisions, El Niño, and of course the decisions we made in our everyday life that affects our environment. Even with amount of rain received this year, I do not think California should celebrate yet. California has a history of extended droughts and there is an issue with the overflow of water in the dam.
California's drought is a pressing issue. There is problems with water supply, and also water restrictions. The environment is drying and is causing major flooding. There are some clues to how the drought started, like climate change. There are some companies who are actually making money of the drought.
Our discussion turned to gloom and doom when someone mentioned a recent article in the New York Times that “scientists reporting in journal Geophysical Research letters assert global warming caused by greenhouse gas emissions has probably worsened drought in California by 15 to 20 percent; warns future dry spells there will certainly be more severe as planet gets hotter.”
The golden state suffers from extreme drought that begins since three years. The drought start because the climate changes which cause lack of snowpack on top of mountains that milts and fill California lakes. Another climate changes are the high temperature, which cause agriculture draught that requires more water. The underlying problem after this drought that farmers have lost their jobs and the lakes, which is the source of water in California drought. The draught this year is the worst in the state's history and the water will not last for more than one year.
For the past 5 years and so, California residents had suffer from increased fires, dry seasons, extreme weather cases, lots of years of very low income and rent cost gong
California is often regarded as one of the best places to live in America, and one of its main attractions is the warm weather year-round. However, the consistent heat and lack of rain has caused many droughts in the past and is still a major issue today. California has currently been in a drought for four years and recently it has become a serious problem. While the state has experienced many droughts before, the current drought has already had severe effects on California’s society and economy. If conditions continue to worsen, these effects will not only be devastating for California but also for the whole nation.
To begin, California agriculture has lost over 1.84 billion dollars due to a drought. Not only is revenue lost, 10,000 jobs farmers and workers have been lost. The main issue California is facing is the lack of ground water. Wells are continuously being drilled deeper and heavy pumping gives little time for the water source to replenish. Therefore, if the drought continues California agriculture will lose much more money and unemployment will begin to rise.
