Source Type: Primary Summary: The author who wrote this article is Arthur (2016) and he talks about the Cubs winning their first title in 108 years. He describes his emotions when the Cubs won the final game. For example, “The first thing I did after Chicago won was call my dad, Tom Arthur”. (Arthur, 2016, p. 1). He created this source to tell people how he was feeling and what his emotions were like after his favorite team won the World Series. People are more likely going to read this article because most people in the United States were cheering for the Cubs. A lot of people were feeling the same way this author was going though. The audience would be any Cubs fans or anyone who likes to these kind of stories. Another type of audience would
Second Main Point: The Cubs have had many great players over the course of their existence.
The powerhouse1919 Chicago White Sox were considered to be one of the greatest teams ever assembled in Major League Baseball. They were a huge favorite to win the 1919 World Series, but to the shock and disappointment of their loyal fan base, they lost the series 5 games to 3. In what would be referred to as “The Black Sox Scandal”, it was announced to the city of Chicago that numerous Chicago White Sox players were losing the games on purpose in exchange for money from people who had bet against the favored White Sox. The players accused of being a part of The Black Sox Scandal were eventually taken to court, where they were acquitted of all charges. Even though the players were acquitted for their crimes, they
The Victory Season: The End of World War II and the Birth of Baseball’s Golden Age written by Robert Weintraub is focused on the 1946 Major League Baseball season after World War II when “America was ready to heal.” During the war, parks were empty, the balls were made with fake rubber, and all of America’s favorite players were serving in the war. When players returned, they exchanged their military uniforms for baseball uniforms and the sport of baseball quickly became a key tool which helped many American’s return to their normal, everyday lives. Parks began to fill up again and a new era of baseball was born. Although so many soldiers returning at once did cause some issues, the National League was very competitive and many thrived on it. Weintraub discusses many events considered to be baseball’s best times including: the difficult, yet rewarding transition of baseball players from military service to the major leagues, The Brooklyn Dodgers breaking the racial segregation in the league by signing a black man, Jackie Robinson, the introduction of the Mexican League, in which American players signed with to receive higher salaries, and the 1946 World Series between the Boston Red Sox and the St. Louis Cardinals, where the Cardinals defeated the Sox in the seven game series. Weintraub strongly focuses
Rationale – I chose this book because I am a huge Cincinnati Reds fan. I also am aware of the Pete Rose situation and wanted to learn more about him.
Earlier this week, the Chicago Cubs won their first World Series since 1908. In his recent article, “What is the Chicago Cubs' billy goat curse?,” Ray Sanchez describes how one man, Bill Sianis, pronounced a curse on the Chicago Cubs in 1945. In 1945, Sianis purchased one ticket for himself and one ticket his pet goat, Murphy. When his goat was not allowed into the game he cursed the team and said "The Cubs ain't gonna win no more!”
In Major League Baseball’s 1919 World Series two teams that were the Chicago White Sox and Cincinnati Reds went up against each other. They played only a eight game series because the Cincinnati Reds already had won five games after the eighth game was over which didn’t require them to go to the ninth game. Many people found it hard to believe that the Reds actually one the World Series because the White Sox were favored to win. The bookies made the odds seven to five favored on the Chicago White Sox to win. Believe it or not the Chicago White Sox actually let the Cincinnati Reds win the series because they were payed a significant amount of money to throw the game. This famous Scandal was known as The Black Sox Scandal. The media reacted very suddenly to this scandal, the people were very shocked when they got word of it, and the aftermath of this Scandal cause many problems in baseball and society.
The Chicago White Sox of 1919 were a clear favorite to win the World Series. They had all of the odds on their
“Rejected by Rose,” screamed, TNT broadcaster, Kevin Harlan. Derrick Rose’s block on Rajon Rondo’s shot was the play that forced game 7 and kept the Bull’s season alive. The 2009 first round series between the Chicago Bulls and the reigning NBA champions, Boston Celtics was the best playoff series I ever watched. What does Rose’s late-game heroics have to do with anything? The excitement of the sport of basketball. My paper will be about my favorite sport to watch and play I will also mention about my favorite sport to participate in ancillary. Afterward, I will relate my favorite sport to Michael Mandelbaum’s The Meaning of Sports and offer my opinion on the book.
In, “Why I’m Rooting for the Cubs in the World Series” the faith and disappointment tones reflect on Rick Cohen’s belief that one day the Cubs baseball team will win one day in the World Series. The team has not won since 1908, but Cohen is still in the stands rooting that one day the team will have a comeback and eliminate the “curse.”
On a quick side note, The Indians now, after losing to the Cubs, hold the longest streak without a World Series win. This paper will be a short history of the Cubs from their beginnings to the Cubs of today. The Cubs have not always been the Cubs. When they we’re first founded, they were originally called the White Stockings (not the white socks).
They were a team, they were brothers. The significances of this photo can be seen clearly in the front row. There is a black player and a white player holding the trophy. This represents that there is no rank within the team. Everyone was equal and that’s what many people at this time were striving to have is that equality this team was able to achieve. This photo represents a group of equals and I believe that is what the author is trying to convey to us. I believe that a picture speak louder than words. Yes you can imagine what it would be like to live in this time and you can imagine the happiness of the players at this time but you don't really see it. When you look at this photo you can clearly see the pride on the face of the players. You can see the work and trials and struggles they had to go through to get to this point. Even the best writer can not capture an image like this or describe what it is to be in that moment. Only a photograph can do that job. The photo was created for the people of the time period, so they know what had happen, so they know history was made. This was huge historically impressive achievement that shook the United States to it core. It woke up people and made them realized that there is a fight brewing and it's not going away. Yes this achievement was a huge success. This moment will forever be known a huge step towards equality for black and
Throughout the time leading up to the 1919 World Series, reporters in both Chicago and Cincinnati spoke about how good the World Series would be, and the odds-makers listed the White Sox as heavy favorites.
Amy Goodman is a journalist visiting Otterbein’s campus that informs the public through her daily program, Democracy Now. Goodman has told several stories on important topics that release their full potential, over the course of twenty years. I was drawn to the article and video, “Beyonce Wins the SuperBowl”. I personally didn’t watch the Super Bowl, or the halftime show, so I had no prior accuracy of the topic. Immediately, I saw a lot of post, and talk with different opinions over the topic which pulled me into the story even more.
What is a curse? A curse could be defined as anything negative wished upon a person or place. So is it possible that an entire franchise be cursed? Well this is the case for one Major League baseball club, the Chicago Cubs. It has been over 100 years, 1908, since the Cubs have won the World Series. With many many great teams since then and no World Championships, is it too much to think that maybe, just maybe this franchise, is cursed? Well from the Billy goat in 1945 to the black cat in 1969 and Steve Bartman in 2003, many unfortunate events have occurred that have led many to believe that in fact the Chicago Cubs franchise is cursed.
“ In the 2012 season the cubs: won 61 games, lost 101 games and still hosted nearly 2.9 million fans at Wrigley Field” (marketing Book). A team the
