Sophomore Year Of High School: Student Analysis

Consistency and dedication. Two qualities that saved me from a significant drop in my academics in my sophomore year. I was doing just fine at Cajon High School, my grades were not as good as I wanted them to be, but they were still acceptable. Overall I was very delighted to be there. However, this all changed when my parents told me that we were moving from San Bernardino to Hesperia, California and I would be transferring high schools.

In my time here at Sublette Middle School, I have never perceived more about myself or my peers. I have gained massive amounts of intelligence, and stress, through my experience. But, I believe that all of the stress and anxiety was worth it, because it has contributed to my perspective on education. Education gives you a motive to get a good job, and not to rely on your parents or loved ones for support.

Walden University prides itself on helping students accomplish their goals, and providing the necessary resources to succeed. The interconnection between Walden, my colleagues and myself, are all of equal value because one cannot properly function without the other. Therefore, when all three parts are simultaneously collaborating, it creates a harmonious equation for victory. Being able to find out and navigate the resources available through Walden, developing a positive and collaborative relationship with my peers, and being able to excel in an online work environment appropriately is the formula I need to achieve ultimate success.

As a Richland Collegiate High School student, I am always attacked by stressors in my academic life. The stress provoked by school-related objects often bled into my home and social life. It created an unhealthy environment where I felt weighed down by the stress. Due to the stress, I often lost my appetite and started sleeping less. My mother worried that I was depressed or that I was developing an eating disorder, but I just did not know how to pick myself up and just get things done. I lacked motivation, self-control, and a healthy balance of work and relaxation. Throughout the course, I have been picking up on some of the strategies I can use to help alleviate my stress and subsequently improve other aspects of my life.

Being a first generation college student is something that I hold very close to my heart, growing up watching my parents struggle is what drives me to work hard and do better everyday. When I envision my future, I see a strong independent woman who works hard to give back to the community and the people that helped shape the person she is.

My fifth grade teacher, Mrs. Wilsey, has influenced my life. Right before I entered fifth grade, I was diagnosed with Crohn’s Disease. Crohn’s Disease is an incurable disease that causes inflammation throughout my entire gastrointestinal tract. While in fifth grade, I had to miss numerous days of school because of the treatments I would receive during the school day that was three hours away, as well as suffering from complications due to my Crohn’s Disease. Even though I was worried about falling behind in my classwork, Mrs. Wilsey was always there for me and guiding me through the most difficult time of my life. She was always willing to help me get caught up with the assignments I missed, and she would allow me to have extra time to make

Sophomore year I was told to go to a community college for a two-year degree. By my application to Ohio University, I picked the road that everyone thought I was not capable of. Although my transcripts are not perfect, especially my GPA and ACT score the reasons are complicated. The Tuesday of my ACT week I got into a survive car accident which left me with a brain swelling concussion. I had never taken the ACT and did not want to have October be my one and only time. Therefore I took the test anyway, which led to a horrible scoring rate. Although it was not my best overall I think that for having a concussion my writing was well done. Unfortunately my car accident injuries lasted for five months, leaving me busy and injured. I again took the

When I was seven, I had to witness my older brother be kicked out of the house. This was such a traumatizing experience because my older brother was my role model. Additionally, as a young child, my little sister and I were frequently home alone due to my parents always working double shifts. Thus, once my brother left, I had to take on his responsibilities; consequently, I learned how to be a leader at a young age. This experience has allowed me to develop values such as excellence, leadership, truth and service that will contribute to the vision and legacy of Howard University.

Junior year; considered the most difficult year of high school. Junior year wants to make senior year as relaxing and stress free as possible. Part of this preparation: community service and then writing a paper and making a presentation surrounding that service. Kennedy calls this project the integrated service learning (ISLE) project. For my ISLE project, I built houses in New Orleans through Habitat for Humanity, a nonprofit organization. I found that when hurricane Katrina and the Levis broke it left a tremendous amount left in its wake. Since the trip would knock all my service hours out in a week and I became interested in the project I went and worked on houses and learned a great deal culture and poverty

When I was five, I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. Even though this was a truly terrible event in my life, there were people who were extremely helpful to me. Obviously, my parents, other family, and friends helped me through the situation, but I am eternally grateful to the nurses. They made me feel like everything was going to be ok as it was happening in the moment. They were the reason I made it through the ordeal. Since then, I could always picture myself going into nursing so that one day, I can be that same trusted support system for someone else.

Wiest took the time to listen to my troubles and work with me outside of class. She even invited me to come drink tea in her office if I needed a break or was not feeling well. But more importantly, she helped me put everything into perspective and I made some tough decisions. I cut down on my work hours, took a few months off from orchestra, took less volunteer opportunities, and learned to prioritize my responsibilities. Mrs. Wiest also helped me with my work when I was falling behind and let me take her finals at different times to balance my work load. I panicked when everything got difficult, but she supported me. If any teacher has made an impact on me during my academic career, it was certainly Mrs. Wiest. She goes above and beyond for her students and wants everyone to succeed. The three colleges I have chosen to apply to are Hinds Community College Vicksburg-Warren Campus, Alcorn State University, and Copiah-Lincoln Community College. The reasons I have selected these three colleges are based on location, financially feasible and great reviews I have heard from others about their own personal experience or had a family member who attended one of these colleges. I have a handicap Uncle that I help take care of so I need to be close home in order to help my mother. I have talked with mother and a few friends about my interest and goals and I have their complete support in my endeavors. I just can’t believe there is only few more days of high school left. As the days are getting closer and closer, it's getting sad. I still remember the day I stepped into Maine East High School as a Freshman, at that time, all I wished for was to graduate from this school with good grades. High school was not the way I imagined, it is way different from what I thought and definitely different from Middle School. Freshman year was the “exploring/adventure” year, finding where each classes were, what activities/clubs were offered at this school and many more. Freshman year went quickly and then Sophomore year came up. Sophomore year was probably the least stressful year in high school but from Sophomore year my family and friends started asking me the scariest question “What are you doing after high school, which career?

Although almost everyone was or will be a Freshmen they are very misunderstood and stereotyped. Many people portray Freshmen to be small. When people often think of Freshmen they picture them as running everywhere. They are portrayed as Immature the majority of the time. People like to portray them as being loud all as well. The biggest misconception is they are rude. They are portrayed this way because there was a time freshmen were small, Immature and would run everywhere but as time went on Freshmen became less Immature, calmed down as stopped running everywhere and not everyone stayed small. Freshmen should stopped being portrayed in such negative ways and they should be looked at as just fellow students.

Her name was Mrs. Treneff and her determination and passion for teaching helped shape me into the student I am today. Her help paired with hard work allowed me to transition a year ahead in Math; something I never thought possible at that age. She made learning math exciting for me. When she taught me the basic principles of algebra, I was taken back to the excitement I would feel when I answered a history fact.
