My Beloved World is a memoir of the first Puerto Rican woman on the Supreme Court, Sonia Sotomayor. Sotomayor writes about her experiences from the age of 8 till current day. She goes into full detail of her family life, political, and cultural and how it shaped her future. Below you will learn about Sonia’s childhood and how it lead to her becoming on the Supreme Court.
Sonia Sotomayor was born June 25, 1954. She grew up living in the South Bronx housing in the projects of New York. Her parents both descending from Puerto Rico, came to New York to raise their two kids. After Sonia was diagnosed with her diabetes, she realized that would not be possible. Coming across an episode of Perry Mason, was Sonia’s first encounter with the justice system. She enjoyed watching him and looked up to him. Sotomayor said she "made the quantum leap: If that was the prosecutor's job, then the guy who made the decision to dismiss the case was the judge. That was what I was going to be." (quote) Sonia always enjoyed the woman doctor, because she was the first woman doctor at her hospital. For Sotomayor, it did not come easy, but she made success a necessity not an option. She is living proof of the American Dream. As you read from above, Sonia had a rough childhood, facing many obstacle. She spoke Spanish up until the death of her father, nine years of age. Sonia was raised a Catholic and was surrounded by Puerto Rican communities. She referred to herself as “Nurican”, a Puerto Rican and New Yorker. Sonia house life was not great. She was pretty much on her own with her mother working crazy hours and her father being an alcoholic and soon dying. She pushed herself in school, to do better and go far.
