The juvenile justice system needs to place more emphasis on support and correction than on punishment, taking into account the vulnerabilities and developmental differences of young offenders. In addition, it is important to convert juvenile correctional facilities into therapeutic and educational settings that target the underlying causes of misbehavior. In order for these children to become successful individuals, the primary components of juvenile detention have to be educational opportunities, psychological services, and rehabilitation programs (Hanink, 2018).

By reading this book, I learned a lot about teenagers’ critical situations at juvenile hall. This book gave me a greater insight and deeper understanding of what their lives are like and the challenges they face in this place. I also learned that the legal system is not doing a great deal to help these young kids mend their lives. They are not being offered counseling or therapy which could help facilitate a great deal of things for them such as, getting a better orientation of a path for them to follow, dealing with the excessive amount of stress they face in a healthy way

In the case of juveniles or young adult offenders, who in prison are vulnerable to attacks and abuse from other inmates, being placed solitary confinement grants the protection and security. Another benefit is that the prison officials can subject more aggressive and violent inmates to solitary confinement to further protect the general population of inmates. Moreover, supermax prisons that subject inmates to solitary confinement decrease the likelihood of gang affiliations and formations, in which the prison officials are able to further control the safety and security of the prison. However, the negatives effects of solitary confinement outweigh the positives. Therefore, solitary confinement needs to be reformed to lessen its negative effects.

Approximately two hundred thousand juveniles enter the adult criminal justice system each year and most have non-violent crimes. It is basically like throwing the sheep to the lions. There is just no way that this is a good use of our criminal justice system. Juveniles should be kept in their own facilities to the maximum extent possible where they can receive the treatment that just may lead them back to being productive members of society. Even though there are some of the same issues in juvenile facilities as there are in adult facilities, such as overcrowding, prisoner assaults, and custodial abuse. There are systems in place to monitor them and deal with the problems. When these things go on in adult prisons there most often is the attitude of callousness, whereby problems are looked at as part of the system, a kind of "who cares about the inmate" attitude.

Solitary confinement for juveniles has been a common problem for several years. Growing up in solitary confinement as a juvenile, prison life is the only life they will know. They will not know how to act in the real world. They will get sent right back to jail over and over again. The kids adapt to the prison lifestyle. They will start to lose their mind in jail if they are in there too long. Solitary confinement should be banned for juveniles because it has the potential to negatively impact one’s mind, which can be detrimental on the brain, which is not yet fully developed.

Just imagine a criminal walking down a hallway to a small enclosed space that they will be trapped in there seeing those exact same 4 prison walls for days, weeks, month, and even years. Only seeing another human being when given food, though a small slot in the door. Some criminals turn out fine, but others Most of them slowly goes insane going crazier and crazier by the day. Many people have been debating on if solitary confinement should even be in prisons or not. So Solitary confinement does not effectively work as well as it needs to.

Regarding juvenile solitary confinement I do agree that it should be used but only in extreme cases such as one inmate physically assaulting another inmate or guard however I don't think it should be up to anyone to mess with someone else’s mental psyche for petty misbehavior especially if the goal is to reform them into productive members of society for the future. The environment in adult facilities is immensely different from juvenile facilities. Rehabilitation options are limited in adult facilities. It is hard for children to fit in with adults, or even be respected. Lack of attention and bullying are both major problems for juveniles in prison (Human Rights Watch). Juveniles in prison have a 18x greater risk of committing suicide, due to lack of supervision (Juvenile Forensic Evaluation Center) However, juvenile facilities provide higher quality education, adequate health care, and better security. 70% of juveniles are held under locked situations, rather than staff secure settings (Juvenile Forensic Evaluation Center). This decreases the amount of violence between juveniles and the staff. Since depression is a common health issue, juvenile facilities often have treatment available. Youth incarceration is a growing dilemma in the United States that populates facilities as well as ruins lives at an alarming rate. As a society we cannot expect our kids to be the future of this nation when we are placing them in facilities where they become victims of emotional, physical, and sexual abuse that is far worse for them than adults. Michelle Alexander is a professor at Ohio State University and a graduate of Standford Law school. She states in her award-winning book, The new Jim Crow: Mass incarceration in the Age of Colorblindness "Children are five times more likely to be sexually assaulted once being placed into a facility" (Alexander,123).  Adolescents being detained causes many problems that are much more detrimental to them than adults. Some of them will now have exposure to drugs and gangs. Others will become victims of sexual abuse from other older inmates or staff members and risk transmitting sexual diseases. Most young juveniles have a mental illness that has not been treated or they become suicidal when staying in a facility.  These young people are still adapting to their environment and should not be treated as adults.  They are unable to grow and develop when we are punishing them like adults and trapping them in the US justice system.  The families of these children will now suffer knowing what their child faces in these facilities. As a nation we cannot consider ourselves civilized when we are placing these young people in facilities that punish them like adults.

Solitary confinement is a method of reform in prisons, which is mainly used when inmates defy the rules and regulations of the prison system. It is also used to protect juveniles from adult inmates and/or dangerous situations within the prison; however, solitary confinement can be viewed as cruel and unusual punishment. Prisoners can be in complete isolation in a cell that is approximately six feet by eight feet with little or no light; there is limited access to rehabilitation or education and limited physical exercise. Solitary confinement is not limited to adults. It is also used in juvenile detention centers and state prisons across the United States. Adolescents are still developing mentally and physically, and as a result serious mental, physical and developmental issues can emerge or worsen when in confinement for long periods of time. Juvenile detention centers, State and local prisons should invest in a more adequate solution to rehabilitate incarcerated juveniles, such as educational programs, extensive psychotherapy and counseling.
