The speech, “Ain’t I woman?”, was delivered by a woman called Sojourner Truth at the women’s convention in Akron Ohio, on May 29, 1851.This speech has a very powerful message as it pointed out without reservations, not just what an average woman in the American society was going through at that time but also what a black women were going through. This is a powerful speech and it challenges the issue of women’s rights even in our society presently. Also, women had become breadwinners for their households, even though this is supposed to be the primary function of the supposed head of the household being a man, women are expected to give birth to children and in spite of that, she is also expected to work hard and earn the funds/resources to take care of the economic commitments in her household, she works hard and gets involved in a lot of functions to make ends meet in her life, yet she is being regarded as the “weaker sex”. The woman faces a lot of discrimination and maltreatments in different areas of her life; in politics, in her career, in pursuit of her own dreams, even in her own family and in most cases she is addressed in a less than a human way and she is treated as if she does not have a life even though she has contributed immensely to the growth of the society. This was why Sojourner Truth was determined to make her points clear on the discrimination of women by utilizing repetitive languages and biblical references. In her speech she pointed out the existence of hypocrisy and inequality between men and women, blacks and whites
