What is soil? Soil is a mixture of broken rocks, minerals, living organisms, and decaying matter. Look around you; do you think that we need soil in our everyday lives? Sure we do. Natural flowing water is filtered through the soil thus making it drinkable. We breathe the air that is produced by plants that grow in soil. Our clothes wouldn’t be made if the cotton plant had no soil to grow in. Did you know that soil makes up the outermost layer of our planet? Texas is home to more than 1,000 different kinds of soil which are classified into 9 soil orders. Out of the 1,000 types of soil only 6% are able to sustain crop life. There are many ways to conserve soil. Windbreaks, cover crops and crop rotation are some methods to conserve soil. Windbreaks are tree lines that are planted around crop fields to provide shelter from the wind which in turn protects the topsoil from erosion. Cover crop is a crop that is planted just to occupy the land but they are not always harvested because the land is occupied by crop year round this reduces soil erosion. Crop rotation is a set of crops planted in order and repeated yearly. Examples of crop rotation are corn could be planted one year, wheat the following year and hay the third year. No till farming uses double-disc openers to cut out the last crop planted and dropping the new seed in its place. This farming technique does not disturb the soil as much as normal tilling. Many soil conservationists argue that soil tillage destroys the aggregation and microorganism of the soil. This in later terms reduces the sustainability of our food production and reduces the intake of water by the crop. No till farming benefits all farmers when used with cover crop, crop rotation or windbreaks.
It may seem like we will never run out of soil, but soil conservation is a critical issue in Texas today. So if the entire farming community implemented at least one type of soil conservation effort we would widely improve our agriculture benefits. These benefits would include saving energy, by using less diesel fuel for tractors. Implementation of these farming practices could save water and reduce several types of diseases and pests that farmers encounter when planting their crops. This is no time to be cutting corners on expenses because the United States spends about $37.6 billion each year on soil

I watched a Ted Talk on YouTube called Ted x Huntsville, it was presented by Karen Wynne and was published October 1st, 2014. The topic that Wynne talked about was the concept of stopping treating soil like dirt. She started by stating a quote by Leonardo Da Vinci that said: “We know more about the celestial bodies than the soil under our feet”. This was an interesting way of introducing her talk since after saying we near nothing about earth she begun to tell us the difference between soil and dirt introducing the topic at hand. For soil she gave the basic definition that it was a mixture of sand, silt, and clay plus air holes, water, and organic matter and as for dirt she just simply washed her hands on her shirt as if it was nothing after playing with the soil. So, already she was hands on and showed that we humans don’t really care about our soil.
The state of Texas is home to over a variety of different types of soil. There are over 1,300 different kinds of soil in Texas alone. Due to the fact that most of our land is used for farming, our soil is one of the most important resources. Texas is known for its diverse climate and landscape, so each part of the state has a particular soil to mirror what is needed. Texas has over twenty one divisions of major land reasource areas that have similar or related uses. Here are some examples of the different types of soils.

It is the main support system for our earth because it holds the roots to the ground, keeping our ground in tact. When we can’t control what happens in nature, like the Dust Bowl, we may be hit with unexpected dangers, but when it comes to things we can control we need to act right away. Today, in the United States, farmers and ranchers produce a wide variety of commodities for food, fuel, and fiber in response to markets. These farmers understand and recognize the significance of managing their soil as well as their plant productivity. America’s farmers are true professionals because crop production is a very complex business.

(Pimentel, Kounang, 1998) “Soil erosion reduces the productivity of the land by loss of water, soil, organic matter, nutrients, biota, and depth of soil.” (Pimentel, Kounang, 1998) With no conservation methods in place in certain places like: no contour farming, no cover crop, no terraces, no water ways, and tillage on steep hills is asking for a loss of productivity from the land. You should be mindfulness about soil erosions, especially farmers. The purpose of soil erosion shows how the relationship between precipitation and soil along with how it can make water. It will identify the causes and effects, the process, and solutions of soil erosion. This will discuss what farmers and others need to be mindful of due to soil erosion of their lands and crops. Solutions of soil erosion will also be identified to decrease and maintain soil erosion.
Soils can be classified based on their structural and textural properties, formed from Parent material (Soffe 2003:23). The primary components of soil comprise the Texture, this relating to the range of sizes of particles in the soil and their distribution. (The Macaulay Institute, 2016;Soffe, 2003:3). The texture of specific soil types will fall into one of 4 classifications; Clay, Silt, Sand or in some cases an equal percentage of each to form Loam.
