The Gods Must Be Crazy Sociological Analysis Rarely do you find a film both intelligent and entertaining like “The Gods Must Be Crazy”. The film is a collision of the individual journeys of three separate groups: the journey of Xi, the bushman, traveling to the end of the earth to get rid of a Coca-Cola bottle; the growing relationship between Kate Thompson, a school teacher, and Andrew Steyn, a clumsy scientist; and the actions of a band of terrorist led by Sam Boga. One day, a Coca-Cola bottle drops from the sky and lands unbroken near the temporary home of the bushman. In continuing, structural functionalism looks at situations from a macro level, often over-generalizing situations. During his journey to the end of the earth, Xi is jailed for killing a goat. The institution of law is one that Xi has not been introduced to yet. They refuse to look at Xi as an individual case, and give him the same sentence that everyone committing that crime would get. Structural functionalism looks at the general not the specific. That is why they refused to take into consideration Xi’s different background and his unknowingness of social laws. Moreover, this theory states that rapid change is seen as disruptive. As Xi leaves his home in search for the end of the earth he is introduced to many modern products and a whole new species of people which never knew existed. While staying with Andrew and Mpudi he is introduced to new technology and even learns how to drive a car. At one point Andrew offers him money, but Xi refuses to accept it because it is worthless to him. Throughout his journey he takes a huge leap from the life that he knows to this modern era. Through it all he is willing and accepting, yet at the end he still sticks to his values. He is not influenced by the events that interrupted his goal, and slowly returns to his family and old lifestyle. His actions show that change must occur slowly for a stable

Ancient Greece was filled with so much character, from their religion to even the stories that followed them through generation to generation. One important thing to remember is how they took their religion very seriously and believed very much in their goddesses and their gods. This strong belief carried out into their everyday lives, where they began to believe that everything that happened within their day, was from the gods. With such a love and respect for these gods, they held them up on a pedestal and gave them all their respect and looked at them only as positive. These gods that play a role in their life, often act more as a spiritual guide more than anything. They take on mortal disguises to allow them to help the world without becoming noticed. As we can see in The Odyssey, the relationship between gods and mortals is close knit, but the main difference that is evident, is the power between the two. The gods may not be able to cause death upon a mortal, but they can do everything to lead towards that. In the book, the gods can make or break your day. We see within several relationships between the gods and mortals, that the power from the gods can be not only positive, but also negative. Each mortal has been influenced in some way by the gods, for either the greater good, or bad. Which goes without saying, that the Greek take their theology in believing in the gods, very seriously.
Structural functionalism is a framework for building theory that sees society as a complex system whose parts work together to promote solidarity and stability. Essentially, structural functionalism is how every part of society fits and works together to keep everyone involved, united and to support the process of moving our nation forward. The colony that Flik lives in and that encounters an issue is its own small part of the world that follows structural functionalism; however, when Flik ventures off into the bug world to find warrior bugs it is easy to see ways that structural functionalism works outside of the colony. In the ant colony, the audience can see structural functionalism because each ant has a job that they do to ensure the success of the colony. The ants collect food together and follow orders from people who are higher in position like Princess Atta or The Queen. Through following orders and working together, the colony is able to find a balance and accept what they must do to become successful in fulfilling the needs of not only themselves but also the demanding grass hoppers.
As the movie begins, a structural functionalist would identify the social institutions involved. One of the first institutions introduced is family. The spouse of Chris Gardner is not satisfied with the amount of income coming he is earning. It is clear that the institution of family is not meeting the needs of happiness and financial stability because of the low income. The institution of family interrelates with many others, such as the education institution and especially economic institution.

In 1980 a low-budget South African film was released which over the years has not only spawned a number of sequels, but took a rather humorous look at the cultural differences between so-called "primitive" cultures and the modern world. The film was called "The Gods Must Be Crazy," was written and directed by South African filmmaker Jamie Uys, and called by the New York Magazine "pure play, an amiable shaggy-dog story in which the awesome wilderness serves as an adaptable prop." (Denby, 47) It told the story of a Ju/hoansi bushman who journeyed to the end of the Earth to discard a Coke bottle; and along the way encountered the modern world for the very first time. Modern society was presented through the eyes of a person who had never encountered it before, and while the interaction was often portrayed as hilarious, it also provided a interesting view of the modern world from a most unlikely source.
