In many dictionaries society is described as a community of people living together in a group or nation. Even though it may simply mean that; society is one of the sociological terms derived from a Latin word “socious” meaning friendship or companionship. It is a large grouping sharing the same cultural, social and geographical location. Society consists of people and their mutual awareness and interactions with each other, it is a network of social relationships. Society can be shown as a group of unique individuals who share the same culture and social structure, the members of the society may have different ethnic groups but they share the same society. Society is not a constant it can never stay the same it always changes with the people. …show more content…
Television showed Australia’s national identity by using humour and soap operas that displayed Australian culture; it was the main medium of entertainment for many Australians. From the 1970s television became cheaper and more accessible in regional parts of Australia that never had television broadcasts. It also started colour television which revitalized it making it more engaging for children and adults to enjoy music, sports, movies and news. Television shows such as The Paul Hogan Show, Hey, Hey its Saturday, Countdown and Number 96 are example of popular and recognised Australian television shows from the 1970s. Television was an important factor in shaping modern Australian society because of its impact from television shows on Australians. It was also one of Australia’s first soap operas to be made. It used comedy and melodrama to captivate the audience. It struck the taboo subjects of the 1970s such as homosexuality which was illegal at the time, it also changed the perspective of many Australians on those subjects. As one of the largest forms of pop culture, TV shows in Australia have had a massive impact on the things we buy, our job preferences, and hobbies that we could take up. In the 1960’s this was very much the case. It was the beginning decade for Television
During the 1970's-1960's women definitely made progress. The social norm for women increased dramatically. Women stayed determined for getting their rights until they got what they deserved. Women proved men wrong on many occasions. They weren't 'weak and frail' and they didn't only belong in their own homes. They could do most, if not everything, a man could do. Nowadays, women are equal to men in most ways. There are still feminists who fight for things like equal wages, but women's rights and social norms have definitely improved even if they are not perfect.
Many people challenged the status quo during the 70s, but one group that stood out to me was the Native Americans. The Native Americans become challenging the status quo prior to 1970 as early as 1961, they were trying to shape things for the better. "In 1961, more than 4000 members from 67 tribes gathered in Chicago and issued the Declaration of Indian Purpose..." (Brinkley 741). The document stressed the right to make their own choice and live the life that they wanted to live. This event was just the beginning of the American Indian civil rights movement, over the course of the next 20 years they kept pushing for new legal rights. After a push from the Indians, Congress passed the Indian Civil Rights act which protected them under the
In the late 1960s and early 1970s a few cases made it into the legal record with published decisions that other courts could read. In most of these cases the lawyers called in doctors as expert witnesses. The judges involved fell roughly into two camps. Some turned to the doctors who opposed transsexual surgery and rejected the petitions in the name of preserving the status quo. Others cited the doctors who endorsed transsexual surgery and tried to provide “relief” to the individual petitioners. The two camps came up with different definitions of sex. Neither, though, paid any attention to the transsexual activists who rejected the medical model, and neither questioned the need for the legal categories of female and male. In fact they went
The centuries of prejudice and oppression inflicted upon minorities and women were the precedent for the protests by civil and social groups during the 1960s. These groups formed to promote equality among all US citizens; African Americans especially were craving for this change:
What is society? Society is a group of people living together under some kind of structure or organization. A society works together to achieve a common goal. The goal varies by society. For some it may be to obtain the luxuries in life such as cars and houses and for others it’s just to survive. Directors of some movies are able to depict a very accurate display of society in their movies. This is the case in the movie “Zodiac”. The main goal of the people in this movie is to stay alive.
Hippies, tie dye /and protesting were all part of the 70’s. The 70’s were a fun and colorful time in history and many things happened during the 70’s. The 70’s culture, the style, and the exciting historical events in this decade are the reason why the 70’s are such an interesting time in history.
Society may be defined as a group of people living in agreement, having the same moralistic and judicial rules and standards. To live in a society, one must accept these standards and adopt them as their own. For example, living in the United States indicates that you respect the life, liberty and property of each individual, and you decide to accept the punishment if you violate any of these natural rights. Although one may not always agree with these standards, they choose to make sacrifices for the well-being of others. Society is responsible for creating an image of the ideal person, family, environment, and way of life. Our modern day society has dictated its own definition of beauty, happiness, and success. It seems society has accidentally tied these three together, and since these definitions are not universal, different societies may assign different meanings to each concept. Unlike societies explain why there are so many contrasting beliefs and viewpoints throughout the world today. The growth and morals of society are exclusively dependent on those who choose to be a part of something greater than them. Societies tend to grow only when people come to an understanding to be involved. Society is an accumulation of majority rule and the goals of the majority.

You may know things about the 70s such as hippies, vinyl records, Star Wars, Jaws, Disco, and Afros. But do you really know your facts about the 70s? In 1970 some major political and newsworthy events occurred such as Richard Nixon ordering an invasion on Cambodia. And during this event many colleges marched across the United States in opposition of the invasion. Because of this invasion the US Senate repealed the Gulf of Tonkin resolution which lead to giving power to President Nixon and Johnson during the Vietnam War. Later that year, a very shocking event occurred when the Beatles broke up. In 1971 the Supreme Court ruled that busing students should occur to assist further desegregation of schools. Also during this time Apollo 15 landed on the moon for the first use of the land rover. The olympics happened in Munich, Germany in the summer of 1972. Some events followed during the olympics such as the United States Olympic team got 87 medals. Overall, the seventies had many events that helped the United States grow and become the way America is today.
A society according to Thomas, L (1995:25) is defined as “a group of mutually interdependent people who have organized in such a way as to share a common culture and feeling of unity”. In other ways society consists of people, and culture consists of products that people create.
Society is defined by Merriam-Webster as, “people in general thought of as living together in organized communities with shared laws, traditions, and values.” (1). The term “society” is a very complex entity with many variables and plays a role in the interaction of people every day. So what makes up a Society? Why do we gravitate towards certain groups of people? Why do we stay in certain areas of the United States, or choose to live in the city versus the rural countryside? The list of questions could go-on and on; nevertheless, how are these questions answered. That is where Sociology, which is, “the systematic study of the development, structure, interaction, and collective behavior of organized groups of human beings,” (2) and Psychology, “the science of mind and behavior,” (3) come into play.
Society can be defined as a community of people that dwell in a particular country or region and having shared laws, customs, and organizations whilst culture can be defined as the physical characteristics and acquaintance of a particular group of people that is been defined by everything ranging from religion, language, cuisine, social habits, music and arts (What is Culture?, n,d).
From an anthropology prospective, society is groups of internal and external relations are governed by rules, preform a variety of function, and which endure beyond lives of their constituent. An interest in society has more to do with understanding the way that people associate with one another and how activity is organized. Outside an anthropology perspective, there is two main ways that people would define society. One is a group of people living together in a community, otherwise known as a community or the general public. Where the other is an organization or a club, like the national honors society.
Society is the qualities of a specific gathering of individuals, characterized by everything from dialect, religion, cooking, social propensities, music and expressions. Today for example, the United States as in different nations is populated to a great extent by workers, the society is impacted by the numerous gatherings of individuals that now make up the nation(Contributor, n.d.).
