In many dictionaries society is described as a community of people living together in a group or nation. Even though it may simply mean that; society is one of the sociological terms derived from a Latin word “socious” meaning friendship or companionship. It is a large grouping sharing the same cultural, social and geographical location. Society consists of people and their mutual awareness and interactions with each other, it is a network of social relationships. Society can be shown as a group of unique individuals who share the same culture and social structure, the members of the society may have different ethnic groups but they share the same society. Television showed Australia’s national identity by using humour and soap operas that displayed Australian culture; it was the main medium of entertainment for many Australians. From the 1970s television became cheaper and more accessible in regional parts of Australia that never had television broadcasts. It also started colour television which revitalized it making it more engaging for children and adults to enjoy music, sports, movies and news. Television shows such as The Paul Hogan Show, Hey, Hey its Saturday, Countdown and Number 96 are example of popular and recognised Australian television shows from the 1970s. Television was an important factor in shaping modern Australian society because of its impact from television shows on Australians. Australians for the first time were able to see television and sports programs from around the world which influenced Australian culture. It was also one of Australia’s first soap operas to be made. It used comedy and melodrama to captivate the audience. It struck the taboo subjects of the 1970s such as homosexuality which was illegal at the time, it also changed the perspective of many Australians on those subjects. It became a success and has been regarded as an iconic Australian television show of the 1970s and paved the path for other shows to follow.
