Since a young age, I have had a natural ability to love and support others. Over time, I strengthened those traits through service and through building healthy, meaningful, collaborative relationships with people in the States and people abroad. I am inspired by global Social Work because it promotes human rights and social justice through a multinational lens, while building friendships and finding common ground with people abroad. I have faith you can create social change through demonstrating love and compassion for others, and I desire this humanity in a professional field. At my core, I believe in cultivating our human potential, and I care about making a difference in people's lives. I am confident the U of M Global Activities Scholars Program will help strengthen my Social Work capacity through education as well as practice. …show more content…
I personally challenged myself through a semester abroad. During fall 2011, I studied in Salvador, Brazil for nearly 4 months. This overseas experience was my first long-term, international venture which helped me grow in a professional and personal context. That semester, for example, I pushed myself to learn Portuguese which allowed me to integrate and make friends. I also developed more street smarts after being mugged which enhanced my awareness when living abroad. And I completed a month-long independent study project where I became more flexible and patient when working with local stakeholders. By stepping out of my comfort zone, I gained leadership qualities like language proficiency, cross-cultural awareness, and adaptability which I will incorporate in future global field placements. As a result, my study abroad helped me realize I can not only adapt but thrive in foreign countries, and exemplify global Social
Studying abroad will be an experience of a lifetime. Going beyond the US Coastlines that I have never crossed will get be valuable life lessons that I must learn to be successful in my future career. I want to increase my knowledge both inside and outside of the classroom, and I believe the best way to do that for me is to continue to go beyond those small town borders that have kept me
I am a Member of the Toronto Police Black Community Constitutive Committee (BCCC), where my main role is educating the police on strategies to engage with the youths, adding an anti-oppressive lens. Am also the Vice Chair of the Social Work Students’ Union; and a mentor, and lead mentor in the Tri-Mentoring program. I have made a personal vow to help create a legacy of change and a sense of community where everyone is welcomed, loved and accepted. I am motivated and driven to help the Social Work program and the Faculty of community, achieve our vision, which is to challenge the status quo and create meaningful change.
Adapting to a new environment is challenging for most people who first go abroad to study, so a person must be resourceful and resilient. When encountering numerous challenges, you should find some solutions to overcome it rather than give up. There is nothing quite like being on your own in a foreign country. You might find that studying abroad really brings out your independent nature. Students who study abroad become explorers of their new nation and really discover the curiosity and excitement that they harbor. A benefit to studying abroad is the opportunity to discover yourself while gaining an understanding of a different culture. Being in a new place by yourself can be overwhelming at times, and it tests your ability to adapt to diverse situations while being able to solve the problems. I believe studying abroad bring me a lot. It not only makes me improve my English but also make me how to solve the problems when I
I would like to bring social justice to individual lives by advocating for equality and ensuring access to basic resources for the most underserved populations in our communities. I have been involved in community advocacy with different organizations for most of my adult life, and I have always believed that if there is a problem work talking about then there also are solutions worth exploring and implementing. I’ve had a long-term interest in the field of social work, however it was in 2008 that I decided this was the field for me. I had the opportunity to volunteer with the PeaceJam Foundation at a local conference; PeaceJam is an organization that works with 14 Nobel Peace Laureates to mentor youth, creating young leaders committed to positive change in themselves, their communities, and the world. The impact that I witnessed on the young incredible lives was a defining moment; I knew that I was going to pursue a Masters in Social Work; it feels like a calling rather than the unfulfilling office career I once pursued.
In applying to Arizona State University’s School of Social Work (ASU SSW) Ph.D. program, I aspire to peruse a career as a social work educator. I plan to use this platform and newly acquired skills developed with the university, to advance the field
As stated earlier, I believe that the social work field will allow me to bring attention and professional support to disadvantaged populations. Persuading the MSW program at this moment in my life will not only allows me to help those in need, but it will strengthen my personal values and approaches that I consider to be essential in order to efficiently help others. My approach stems from three concepts that I find to be vital: humility, optimism and determination, regardless of the circumstances. Hoping to be permanently guided by those principles, I will continue to embrace my commitment to the disadvantaged and to be a voice for the
My life experience, coupled with my recent studies, gives me a perspective and skill set that is all encompassing in a setting that promotes and honors academic excellence. As a life-long learner, I am choosing to pursue my MSW to accentuate my professional expertise with clinical proficiency in order to serve the Latino Community, with a special interest on immigrant children, and develop emotional resilience that will last them a lifetime.
so I could immerse myself every day. Following that, I began listening to pop singers from several Latin American countries and watching all the movies I could about their culture. My passion has continued to grow and all my professors have faith that I can succeed in this field. Once I can travel, not studying abroad will have had little impact on my cultural awareness and language proficiency because I refused to let that be the only way to
I value my education and I take my studies very seriously. To be given the opportunity to study Social Work further is highly significant to me and I intend to work for my master’s degree after graduating with my Bachelor’s in social work from Bennett College for Women. I am passionate about social work and I look forward to getting my MSW and making a difference in the community as well as people’s lives. I know that with a social work my goals can be accomplished and I will enjoy my career. I have gained some insight into Sexual Assault while being at an all women institution and seeing my peers take care of their own situations. My Bennett sisters who were victims of sexual assault suffer from depression, left the school and or wanted to commit suicide because of multiple reasons that made them feel unsafe. The difficulties they faced on a daily basis while suffering because the person that assaulted them did not receive any penalty and was allowed to still be on our campus. Another experience was a family member who was a victim and was told to keep it a family secret and could not rely on anyone to protect them. I also have a heart for working with Domestic Violence. During my adolescent years, I both witnessed and experienced Domestic Violence. This had a profound effect on me and after a process of soul searching as to the best use of my skills whilst at the same time satisfying a need to give something back, These personal experiences instilled in me further the
Throwing oneself into an entirely different culture for a few weeks a year, is one of the most intellectually gratifying things I have come to experience. It exposed me to the fact that there is more to life than meets the eye. Accepting its complexity is almost as important as understanding what makes it complex. My visits to Poland have opened my one dimensional mindset, and allowed for more complicated reasoning. Traveling also forces an individual into strange situations they are unaccustomed to, and shows that not everything can be learned in a classroom. It teaches politics, economy, history, geography and less general things such as the ability to explore, grow, and make mistakes. They are left with the satisfaction of doing things they never knew they could
Second, my previous volunteer and work experience have allowed me to work with a widely diverse population and culture. With this experience, it has lead me to many different working relationships and resources. Third, in all social work courses, I have maintained a 3.0, in which I am very proud of considering having a family and commuting an hour one way. With these assets stated above, I believe are to be valuable in bringing to the School of Social Work.
The global perspective I had acquired in my early life guided me to pursue a challenging program of study in high school. The International Baccalaureate
I am applying to the two year program at Stony Brook University because I want to further my education so that I can pursue my goal of helping others achieve a successful and productive life. My passion originates from realizing that there is a need for social workers who can make a difference in people’s life by being supportive and providing the necessary aid needed for everyday survival. Therefore, I believe by completing my master’s degree in social work I can help build a better world by providing care and services that is imperative and vital for survival. There have been many experiences that have influenced my goal to be a social worker. I have learned through personal and profession experience that helping people can have a huge impact.

Studying abroad can be a great way to find career inspiration, growth, and memorable experiences but, with not enough opportunities being offered to students to study abroad and enjoy the benefits of learning key life skills in various countries.
